PREFACE.

THE public mind is, at length, happily aroused to the duty and importance of the intellectual, moral, and religious training of the rising generation. Of all training, doubtless, the religious is the only safe basis for individual usefulness and national greatness: and of all religious training, no part of God's word is so suitable for the foundation of obedience, humility, faith, and holiness, as the Gospels, which contain the history of the Life and Ministry of our blessed Lord and Saviour.

In accordance with this sentiment, the following ONE HUNDRED LESSONS, exhibiting the structure and contents of the Four Evangelical Histories, Pictorially, Geographically, Chronologically, Harmonized, and in Doctrine, are presented; that the young may be thoroughly furnished to every good word and work!

The means employed are :—

First.-Fifty-five Pictorial Representations of the most remarkable Events in the History of our Lord.

Second.-A Chart, for reference, delineating the Gospel Narratives, with every Event localized.

Third.-One Hundred Lessons, chronologically arranged, according to the Harmony of the Rev. Edward Greswell.

Fourth. The HISTORY,' accompanied by GEOGRAPHICAL NOTICES,'-rendered easy by EXPLANATIONS,'-pleasing by HISTORICAL REPRESENTATION, PICTURE DEFINITION, AND EXERCISES,' and useful, by PRACTICAL LESSONS' deduced therefrom, and by Proofs, as ILLUSTRATIONS' of the Doctrines.

The 'CONTENTS' present the substance of the 'HISTORY' of each Lesson, with complete references to the chapter and verse of the Gospel or Gospels recording the event.

The 'INDEX' furnishes a convenient Alphabetical Table, and in almost every case is adapted also to the Explanations.

The HISTORICAL REPRESENTATION AND PICTURE DEFINITION are calculated to interest children, and who, of very tender age, are unable to read; and to enliven the study and refresh the minds of such as are older. The eye is aptly termed, 'the swift intelligencer of the mind;' and what is spoken of that organ may be said of Pictorial representation. Pictorial representation serves to convey, through the eye, to the mind form, proportion, skill, wisdom, symmetry, beauty, identity, difference, remoteness, and approximation brings into exercise memory, comparison, taste, and judgment: so that, throug

avenue, every faculty of the mind is called into immediate action.' Whatever or however the few may object, this is the experience of the million.'

The GEOGRAPHICAL NOTICES' are as full as the nature of the work will admit. A digest of what is there provided should be detailed before commencing the HISTORY, that the knowledge of the locality may assist in the permanent retention of the event.

The 'HISTORY' is necessarily brief. It is not a paraphrase, but a condensation of the words of the Authorized Version; limited by the desire to furnish every help at sight, and that the Lesson, in all its several features of Geography, History, Chronology, Harmony, Explanations, Practical Lessons, and Illustrations, may, by recapitulation, be taught and learned without weariness. The History' is chronologically arranged in a methodical series, and each Lesson is intimately connected with that which goes before, and that which follows after it.' *

The 'QUESTIONS' furnish a help to the inexperienced, and may be discontinued when the teacher is able to form his own from the History, Explanations, &c.

The EXPLANATIONS' should follow the History,' as soon as the latter is remembered by the scholar these the teacher should well understand before meeting his pupil or class, that they may be conversationally given, and not monotonously read. In the Explanations,' the experienced teacher will discover many old friends in new association; and it is hoped, he will also recognise their original beauty and truth, undisfigured, in modern dress.

The PRECEDING Parallels,' in like manner, should be thoroughly understood by the teacher, that the pupil may be readily referred to the Lesson containing them. To discover these will prove an agreeable and instructive exercise.

The GEOGRAPHICAL EXERCISES' will stimulate the learner, and pleasingly bring to mind the Preceding History, Explanations, Practical Lessons, and Illustrations; in all which there should be constant catechetical examination.

The 'PRACTICAL LESSONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS' are to prove the legitimate result of all the preceding, without which all study must be as sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal.'

MAY the Lord bless this, and every other attempt to facilitate the right understanding of the Holy Scriptures; and may the rising generation be early taught that Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people;' and in youth, by God's grace, be led to FOLLOW THE LAMB WHITHERSOEVER HE GOETH!'
