No other character occurs so frequently in the Shoo as this. I have counted more than 350 instances of its use. find it constantly at the beginning of Books and paragraphs, where it is hardly susceptible of translation, and we may content ourselves with saying that it is kan an initial particle. Here we may call it, now; there it is simply as the note which a man gives when he clears his throat preparatory to speaking. We find it again as frequently in the middle of sentences, coming after the subject, and acting as the copula to connect it and the predicate. For this usage of it the student may refer especially to. III. i., where it occurs nearly 30 times. Again, it is sometimes treated as a verb, and defined by to think of, to care for.
