2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto thein: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. 3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although by faith to. Nu. 16. 5, the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, d And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

7 (Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To-day, after so long a time; as it is said, To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. 8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a I rest to the people of God.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall & after the same example of unbelief.

14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, P that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities: but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain inercy, and find grace to help in time of need. CHAP. V.

1 The authority and honour of our Sav iour's priesthood. 11 Negligence in the knowledge thereof is reproved. FOR every high priest taken

from among inen, a is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

24 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

4 5 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as h was Aaron:

5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee.

6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had moffered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard Pin that he feared;

1 He exhorteth not to fall back from the faith, 11 but to be steadfast, 12 diligent, and patient to wait upon God, 13 because God is most sure in his promise.

TH THEREFORE a leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, d and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, f and of eternal judgment.

3 And this will we do, & if God permit.

4 For h it is impossible for those i who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of mthe world to come,

4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abrahain gave the tenth of the spoils.

5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandinent to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes. of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.

7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, f of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron ?

14 For it is evident that Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, hut after the power of an endless life.

17 For he testifieth, i Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before, for k the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of in a better hope did; by the which n we draw nigh unto God.

20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: 21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath, by him that said unto him, The Lord sware, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

6 But now hhath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Juduh:

9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and 1 regarded them not, saith the Lord.

5 Andover it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

6 Now when these things were thus ordained, m the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God: 7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
