13 Estad pues sumisos, á todo establecimiento humano por respeto á Dios: ya sea al Rey como á supremo.

14 Ya á los Gobernadores como enviados por él para tomar venganza de los malechores, y para alabanza de los que hacen bien.

15 Porque esta es la voluntad de Dios, que haciendo bien, hagais enmudecer la ignorancia de los hombres necios.

16 Como libres, y no usando la libertad como de capa para cubrir la malicia,sino como siervos de Dios. 17 Honrad á todos: amad la hermandad: temed á Dios: dad honra al Rey.

18 Siervos, estad sumisos con todo temor á vuestros Señores, no solo á los buenos, y moderados, mas aun tambien á los de condicion recia:

19 Porque esto es digno de gracia, si alguno por la conciencia para con Dios, sufre molestias padeciendo injustamente.

20 Porque ¿qué gloria es si cuando sois abofeteados por vuestras faltas, lo sufris con paciencia? Mas si haciendo bien sois afligidos, y lo sufris con paciencia, esto es agradable á Dios.

21 Porque para esto fuisteis llamados: puesto que Christo padeció tambien por nosotros, dejandonos un egemplo, paraque vosotros siguieseis sus pisadas.

22 El cual no hizó pecado, ni fué hallado engaño en su boca.

23 Quien cuando le maldecían, no maldecía: cuando padecía, no amenazaba; mas se entregaba á aquel que juzga justamente.

24 El cual es el mismo que llevó nuestros pecados en su cuerpo: sobre el madero: paraque muertos á los pecados, vivamos á la justicia: por cuyas llagas habeis sido sanados. 25 Porque vosotros erais como ovejas descarriadas, mas ahora os

13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them that do well.

15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only tr the good and gentle, but also to the froward.

19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto

A SIMISMO mugeres, estad, su

getas á vuestros maridos, paraque tambien los que no creen la palabra, sean ganados sin la palabra por la conversacion de sus mugeres.

2 Considerando vuestra casta conversacion, que es en temor.

3 No sea el adorno de ellas exterior con cabello rizado, ó atavios de oro, ni en galas de vestidos.

4 Sino el hombre interior del corazon, en la incorruptibilidad de un espíritu pacífico y modesto, que es de rico precio delante de Dios.

CHAPTER III.

LIKEWISE, ye wives, be in sub.

jection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

3 Whose adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

5 For after this manner in the

9 No volviendo mal por mal, ni maldicion por maldicion, antes por el contrario, bendiciendo: sabiendo | que vosotros sois llamados paraque poseais bendicion por herencia.

10 Paraque el que quiere amar la vida, y ver los dias buenos, refrene de mal su lengua, y sus labios no hablen engaño.

6 Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any

11 Apartese del mal, y haga el bien: busque paz, y vaya en pos de ella.

12 Porque los ojos del Señor estan sobre los justos, y sus oidos, atentos á sus oraciones: mas el rostro del Señor está contra aquellos que hacen mal.

13 ¿Y quién es el que os podrá dañar, si sois imitadores de lo bueno?

11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

15 Mas santificad en vuestros corazones al Señor Dios, y estad siempre preparados para responder á aquel que os demandare razon de la esperanza que hay en vosotros, con mansedumbre y miedo.

16 Teniendo buena conciencia, paraque en lo que dicen mal de vosotros, como de malhechores, sean confundidos los que calumnian vuestra conversacion en Christo.

17 Porque mejor es que padezcais haciendo bien, (si esta es la voluntad de Dios) que no haciendo mal. 18 Porque tambien Christo padeció una vez por los pecados: el justo por el injusto, paraque nos pudiese llevar á Dios, siendo á la verdad muerto en la carne, mas vivificado por el Espíritu.

19 Por el cual fué tambien á predicar á aquellos espíritus que estaban en prisiones.

20 Los cuales en otro tiempo fueron desobedientes, cuando una vez la paciencia de Dios esperaba en los dias de Noé, mientras estaba fabricandose el arca, en la cual pocas personas, á saber ochò, se salvaron por agua.

21 Lo que era figura del bautismo de ahora, el cual nos salva (no la purificacion de las inmundicias de la carne, sino el testimonio de la buena conciencia para con Dios) por la resurreccion de Jesu-Christo.

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness

and fear:

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evil doers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ

22 El cual está á la diestra de Dios, habiendo subido al cielo: y estandole sumisos los ángeles, las potestades, y las virtudes.

CAPITULO IV.

ABIENDO pues Christo pade

Hcido por nosotros en la carne,

armaos tambien vosotros de este mismo pensamiento, que quien sufrió en la carne, cesó del pecado.

2 Paraque el tiempo que le queda de la carne, viva no en las concupiscencias de los hombres, sino conforme á la voluntad de Dios.

3 Porque el tiempo pasado de nuestra vida, nos basta para haber hecho la voluntad de los Gentiles viviendo en lujurias, en concupiscencias, en embriagueces, en glotonerias, en excesos de beber y en abominables idolatrias.

4 Y les parece cosa estraña, que no corrais con el mismo desenfreno de disolucion que ellos, y os llenan de vituperios.

5 Los cuales darán cuenta á aquel que está pronto para juzgar vivos y muertos.

6 Porque por esto ha sido tambien predicado el Evangelio á los muertos, paraque sean juzgados en carne segun los hombres, y vivan segun Dios en espíritu.

Mas el fin de todas las cosas está cerca: sed pues sobrios, y velad en oracion.

8 Y sobre todo tened entre vosotros caridad fervorosa, porque la caridad cubre la muchedumbre de los pecados.

9 Egerced la hospitalidad uno para con otro sin murmuracion.

10 Cada uno segun el don que ha recibido, comuniquelo á otros, como buenos dispensadores de la gracia de Dios que es de muchas

maneras.

11 Si alguno habla, hable conforme á los oraciones de Dios: si

CHAPTER IV.

Christ

ORASMUCH then as
hath suffered for us in the flesh,

arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

6 For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. 7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

14 Si sois vituperados por el nombre de Christo, sois bienaventurados; porque el Espíritu de gloria, y de Dios reposa sobre vosotros. El ciertamente segun ellos es blasfemado, mas segun vosotros es glorificado.

15 Pero que ninguno de vosotros padezca como homicida, ó ladron, ó malhechor, ó entremetido en cosas agenas.

16 Mas si alguno padeciere como Christiano, no se avergüence, antes glorifique á Dios en esta parte.

17 Porque ya es tiempo que empiece el juicio por la casa de Dios, y si primero comienza por nosotros ¿cuál será el paradero de aquellos que no creen el evangelio de Dios? 18 Y si el justo apenas se salva, ¿en dónde comparecerán el impío, y el pecador?

19 Y por esto los que sufren segun la voluntad de Dios, encomiendenle sus almas como á su fiel criador haciendo bien.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evil doer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

19 Wherefore, let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
