4 ¿No os mostrais parciales, y no os haceis jueces de pensamientos malos?

5 Oid amados hermanos mios: ¿No ha elegido Dios los pobres de este mundo, paraque sean ricos en fé, y herederos del reyno que prometió á los que le aman?

6 Mas vosotros habeis despreciado al pobre. ¿No os oprimen los ricos, y os llevan con violencia ante los tribunales?

7 ¿No blasfeman ellos del buen nombre por el cual sois llamados?

8 Si cumplis la Ley real segun la Escritura: Amarás á tu progimo, como á tí mismo, haceis bien.

9 Mas si haceis acepcion de personas, cometeis pecado, y sois convencidos por la Ley como transgresores.

10 Porque cualquiera que hubiere guardado toda la Ley, y ofendiere en un punto, se ha hecho culpable de todos.

11 Porque aquel que dijó: no cometerás adulterio, tambien dijó: no matarás. Y aunque no cometas adulterio, si matares, eres transgresor de la Ley.

12 Hablad, y obrad así como que habeis de ser juzgados por la ley de libertad.

13 Porque tendrá juicio sin misericordia, el que no usó de misericordia; y la misericordia triunfa sobre el juicio.

14 ¿Qué aprovechará hermanos mios, si alguno dice que tiene fé y no tiene obras? ¿por ventura podrá la fé salvarle?

15 Y si un hermano, ó hermana estuvieren desnudos y les faltare alimento quotidiano,

16 Y alguno de nosotros les digere: Id en paz, calentaos, y saciaos, y no les diereis lo que necesitan

4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give

17 Así tambien la fé, si no tuviese las obras, muerta es en sí misma. 18 Mas alguno dirá: Tú tienes la fé, y yo tengo las obras: muestrame tu fé sin obras, y yo te mostraré mi fé por mis obras.

19 Tú crees que Dios es uno, haces bien: tambien lo creen los demonios, y tiemblan.

20 Mas, ¿quieres saber, hombre vano, que la fé sin obras es muerta?

21 Abraham nuestro Padre, ¿no fué justificado por las obras cuando ofreció su hijo Isaac sobre el altar?

22 Ves como la fé trabajaba con sus obras, y que la fé fué perfecta por las obras?

23 Y se cumplió la Escritura, que dice: Abraham creyó á Dios, y fuéle imputado á justicia, y fué llamado amigo de Dios.

24 Vosotros pues veis como el hombre es justificado por las obras, y no por la fé solamente.

25 Asimismo, ¿no fué tambien justificada Rahab la ramera por las obras, cuando recibió los mensageros y los sacó fuera por otro camino?

26 Porque así como el cuerpo sin espíritu está muerto, así tambien la fé sin obras es muerta.

CAPITULO III.

needful to the body; what doth it profit ?

17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers. and had sent them out another way?

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

CHAPTER III.

muchos maestros: sabiendo que recibirémos mayor condenacion. 2 Porque todos ofendemos en muchas cosas. Si algun hombre no tropieza en palabra, este es varon perfecto, y puede tener enfrenado todo el cuerpo.

ters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

4 Mirad tambien los barcos, aunque sean grandes, y sean llevadas de los vientos, sin embargo con un muy pequeño timon se vuelven adonde quiera el que las gobierna.

5 Así tambien la lengua es un miembro pequeñito, y se gloría de grandes cosas. Mirad cuan grande selva enciende un pequeño fuego. 6 Y la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de iniquidad. Así está la lengua entre nuestros miembros, que contamina todo el cuerpo, é inflama el curso de la naturaleza humana, y es inflamada del fuego del infierno.

7 Porque toda naturaleza de bestias, y de aves, y de serpientes, y de pescados de la mar se doma, y han sido domados del hombre.

8 Pero ningun hombre puede domar la lengua, que es un mal indomable lleno de mortal veneno. 9 Con ella bendecimos á Dios, y al Padre, y con ella maldecimos á los hombres los cuales son hechos á semejanza de Dios.

10 De una misma boca procede bendicion y maldicion. No conviene hermanos mios, que esto sea así.

11 ¿ Echa una fuente por ventura agua dulce y amarga por un mismo caño?

12 Hermanos mios, ¿puede la higuera producir aceytunas, ó la vid higos? así tampoco puede ninguna fuente dar agua salada, y agua dulce.

13 ¿Quién es entre vosotros sabio y avisado? Muestre por buena conversacion sus obras en mansedumbre de sabiduría.

14 Mas si teneis celo amargo y contienda en vuestros corazones, no os gloríeis, y no mintais contra la verdad.

15 Porque esta sabiduría no es la

4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and and it is set on fire of hell.

7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom descendeth not

17 Mas la sabiduría que desciende de lo alto primeramente es pura, despues pacífica, moderada, llena de misericordia, y de buenos frutos, que se acomoda á lo bueno, sin parcialidad, y sin hipocresía.

18 Y el fruto de justicia se siembra en paz para aquellos que hacen paz.

CAPITULO IV.

E dónde vienen las guerras, y las contiendas entre vosotros? ¿no vienen de esto, á saber, de vuestras concupiscencias, las cuales combaten en vuestros miembros?

2 Codiciais, y no teneis: matais y apeteceis tener, y no podeis alcanzar; combatís y guerreais, y sin embargo no teneis, porque no pedís.

3 Pedís, y no recibis, porque pedís mal para gastar en vuestros deleytes.

4 Adúlteros, y adúlteras, ¿no sabeis que la amistad del mundo es enemistad con Dios? Cualquiera pues que quisiere ser amigo del mundo, se constituye enemigo de Dios.

5 Pensais que la Escritura dice en vano: El Espíritu que mora en

nosotros codicia con celos?

6 Mas él dá mayor gracia: Por esto dice: Dios resiste á los soberbios, y da gracia á los humildes.

7 Someteos pues á Dios: Resistid al diablo, y huirá de vosotros.

8 Acercaos á Dios, y él se acercará á vosotros. Pecadores, limpiad vuestras manos, y vosotros de ánimo doble purificad vuestros co

razones.

9 Afligíos, y lamentaos, y llorad; conviertase vuestra risa en lloro, y vuestro gozo en tristeza.

10 Humillaos en la presencia del Señor, y él os ensalzará.

11 Hermanos, no hableis mal los unos de los otros. El que habla mal de su hermano, y juzga á su hermano, dice mal de la Ley, y juzga la Ley. Y si juzgas la Ley, no eres hacedor de la Ley, sino juez.

12 Uno és el dador de la Ley, que puede salvar, y perder. Mas tú, quién eres que juzgas á otro? 13 Ea, ahora vosotros los que decís: hoy ó mañana irémos á aquella ciudad, y estarémos allí un año, y comprarémos, y venderemos, y ganarémos.

14 Y no sabeis lo que será mañana. Porque, ¿qué es vuestra vida? Ciertamente es un vapor que aparece por un poco de tiempo, y despues se desvanece.

15 Y en su lugar debierais decir: si el Señor quisiese, vivirémos y harémos esto, ó aquello.

16 Mas ahora os gloriais en vuestras vanas presunciones. Toda jactancia semejante es mala.

17 El pecado pues está en aquel, que sabe hacer el bien, y no le hace.

9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

CHAPTER V.

G and howl for your miseries O to now, ye rich men, weep

that shall come upon you.

2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
