he-asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she-asses, and camels. And the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great 17 plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife. And Pharaoh called 18 Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? Why saidst thou, 19 She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. And Pharaoh 20 commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

Jer. xxix. 12. For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord to serve him with one consent. Zeph. iii. 9. Take the helmet of salvation, &c. praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance, and supplication for all saints, and for me, that utterance may be given me, that I may open my mouth, boldly, to make known the mystery of the Gospel. Eph. vi. 18, 19.

Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. And the land was not 6 able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. And 7 there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle; and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. And Abram said unto Lot, 8 Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

5 Tents, &c.] And Adah bare Jabal; he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. Gen. iv. 20. Jacob was a plain man dwelling in tents. Gen. xxv. 27. Their tents and their flocks shall they (of Babylon), take away, (said the Lord concerning Kedar and Hazor). Jer. xlix. 29.

Gen. xxxvi. 6, 7. He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver, nor he that loveth abundance, with increase: this is also vanity. And he thought within himself, saying, what shall I do (said the rich man in the parable), because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, the water is ours. Gen. xxvi. 20. And the shepherds came down and drove "them" ("the daughters of Midian") away ("from watering their fathers' flocks"); but Moses stood up, and helped them, and watered their flock. Exod. ii. 17. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envyings and strife, and division, are ye not carnal, and walk as men ? 1 Cor. iii. 3. The works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, &c. &c. Gal. v. 19, 20. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, de

ceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. Titus iii. 3.

The Canaanite, &c. dwelled, &c.] See Gen. xii. 6, and com. the Canaanite. And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house. Gen. xxxiv. 30. It is not good that ye do! Ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies? Nehem. v. 9. 8 Let there be no strife, &c.] A soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger. Prov. xv. 1. Blessed are the peace-makers, for they shall be called the children of God. Matt. v. 9. But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now, therefore, there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? Why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? 1 Cor. vi. 6, 7. Be blameless and harmless in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation. Phil. ii. 15. Follow peace with all men. Heb. xii. 14. But the wisdom that is from above is first

pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy, and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. James iii. 17, 18.

We be brethren.] Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. Gen. xi. 27. And Terah took Abram, his son,

9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the 10 left. And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord

and Lot, the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai, his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. Gen. xi. 31. Be kindly affectioned one to another, with brotherly love. Rom. xii. 10. Beloved, let us love one another. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother, whom he hath seen, how can he love God, whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God, love his brother also. 1 John iv. 7. 12. 20, 21.

9 Is not the whole land, &c.] And Abimelech said (unto Abraham), behold, my land is before thee; dwell where it pleaseth thee. Gen. xx. 15. And ye shall dwell with us (said Hamor, the Shechemite, to the sons of Jacob),

and the land shall be before you; dwell, and trade ye therein, and get you possession therein. Gen. xxxiv. 10. See chap. xlvii. 6. and com.

Numb. xxxii. 1. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world; if any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John ii. 15, 16.

The plain of Jordan.] And he (the angel) said (to Lot), escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain: escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, 11 like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and 12 they separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled

in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, 13 and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were

things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John ii. 15.

The garden of the Lord, &c.] And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food. The tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil; and a river went out of Eden to water the garden. Gen. ii. 9, 10. Gen. xiv. 2. Behold now, this city is near to flee unto (said Lot unto the Lord), and it is a little one; oh let me escape thither. The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Zoar. Gen. xix. 20. 22, 23. 30. And the Lord shewed "him" (" Moses"), from the top of Pisgah, all the land of Gilead unto Dan, and the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm-trees, unto Zoar. Deut. xxxiv. 1. 3. My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall flee unto Zoar. Isa. xv. 5. From the cry of Heshbon, even unto Elealeh, have they uttered their voice from Zoar, even unto Horonaim. Jer. xlviii. 34.

And (God) delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.) 2 Pet. ii. 7, 8.

13 Men of Sodom, &c.] The iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. Gen. xv. 16.
