sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Rom. xii. 1. We have an altar whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle; by him (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifices of praise to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips "giving thanks" (or "confessing") to his name; but to do good, and to communicate, forget not; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Heb. xiii. 10. 15, 16. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ: ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people, that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. 1 Pet. ii. 5. 9.

Burnt offerings, &c.] If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; if his offering be of the flocks, for a burnt sacrifice, he shall bring it a male without blemish; and if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the Lord be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves or of young pigeons. Lev. i. 3. 10. 14. 21 Smelled, &c.] And the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord. Lev. i. 9. 13. 17. I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours. Lev. xxvi. 31. How much better is the smell of thine (the church's) ointments than all spices! The smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon. Cant. iv. 10, 11. I have spread out my hands unto a rebellious people, which say, stand by thyself, come not near to me, for I am holier than thou: these are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day. Isa. lxv. 2. 5. I will accept you with your sweet savour. Ezek. xx. 41. I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Though ye offer me burnt-offerings and your meatofferings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts. Amos v. 21, 22. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ. 2 Cor. ii. 15. Christ hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet smelling savour. Eph. v. 2. I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God. Phil. iv. 18.

Curse the ground, &c.] Cursed is the ground for thy sake. Gen. iii. 17. When thou tillest the ground it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength. Gen. iv. 12. This same (Noah) shall comfort us concerning our work, and toil of our hands, because of the ground

which the Lord hath cursed. Gen. v. 29. Every thing that is in the earth shall die. Gen. vi. 17.

For the imagination.] God saw that every imagination of the thoughts of his (man's) heart was only evil continually Gen. vi. 5. Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? Job xiv. 4. Behold he putteth no trust in his saints, yea the heavens are not clean in his sight. How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water? Job xv. 14. 16. Behold I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Ps. li. 5. The wicked are estranged from the womb, they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. Ps. lviii. 3. Who can say I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? Prov. xx. 9. there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. Eccles. vii. 20. Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth (said the Lord to Babylon). Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants from thy youth, none shall save thee. Isa. xlvii. 12. 15. I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb (said God to Jacob). Isa. xlviii. 8. All we, like sheep, have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way. Isa. liii. 6. No man repented him of his wickedness, saying, what have I done? Every one turneth to his course. Jer. viii. 6. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jer. xvii. 9. And they (of Judah and Jerusalem) said, there is no hope, but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart. Jer. xviii. 12. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. Matt. xv. 19. That which is born of the flesh is flesh. John iii. 6. When they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Rom. i. 21. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Rom. iii. 23. The carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be; so then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Rom. viii. 7, 8. And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; among whom also we all had our conversation in times past, in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature

the children of wrath, even as others. Eph. ii. 1. 3. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed: when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. James i. 14, 15. From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts, that war in your members? Ye lust and have not, ye kill and desire to have, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. James iv. 1, 2. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 1 John v. 19.

Neither will I again, &c.] I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, this is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations. And the waters shall no more become a flood, to destroy all flesh. Gen. ix. 11, 12. 15. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn, that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. Isa. liv. 9.

As I have done, &c.] Whereby (by the word of God) the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished; but the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word, are kept in store, reserved unto fire, against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 2 Pet. iii. 6. 7.

22 While, &c.] In a little wrath I hid my face from thee, for a moment, but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord, thy Redeemer. Isa. liv. 8.

Seed-time and harvest.] For these two years hath the famine been in the land; and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. Gen. xlv. 6. In earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest. Exod. xxxiv. 21. The day is thine, the night also is thine; thou hast prepared the light and the sun: thou hast made summer and winter. Ps. lxxiv. 16, 17. The winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers

appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds is come. Cant. ii. 11, 12. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn, that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. Isa. liv. 9. Let us now fear the Lord our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season; he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. Jer. v. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. James v. 7.

Day and night, &c.] Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea, when the waves thereof roar. Jer. xxxi. 35. Thus saith the Lord, if ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season, then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant. CHAP. IX.-1. Blessed Noah, &c.] verse 7. chap. i. 22. 28; ii. 3; viii. 17. And they (her mother and brother) blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions. Gen. xxiv. 60. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. Ps. cxii. 1. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house; thy children like olive-plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord. Ps. cxxviii. 3, 4. Look unto Abraham, your father, and unto Sarah, that bare you, for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. Isa. li. 2.

Be fruitful, &c.] See verse 7 and 19. chap. i. 28; viii. 17. These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations. Gen. x. 32.

2 The fear of you, &c.] See chap. i. 28; ii. 19. And the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them. Gen. xxxv. I will rid evil beasts out of the land. Lev.

xxvi. 6. At destruction and famine thou (whom God correcteth) shalt laugh; and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. Job v. 22, 23. What is man that thou art mindful of him? Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thine hands: thou hast put all things under his feet: all sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field, the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sca, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. Ps. viii. 4. 6, 7, 8. Thou makest darkness, and it is night, wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. Man goeth forth unto his work, and to his labour, until the evening. Ps. civ. 20. 23. And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land, and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. Ezek. xxxiv. 25. And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground. Hosea ii. 18. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind. James iii. 7.

3 Every moving thing, &c.] And the Lord spake unto Moses, and to Aaron, saying unto them, these are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. Lev. xi. 1. That which dieth of itself, or is torn with beasts, he shall not eat, to defile himself therewith. Lev. xxii. 8. Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God, which he hath given thee. Deut. xii. 15. Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing; ye shall not eat of any thing that dieth of itself. Deut. xiv. 3. 21. What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. Acts x. 15. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith; giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe, and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 1 Tim. iv. 1. 3, 4, 5.

As the green herb, &c.] See chap. i. 29, 30. Let not him that eateth, despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not, judge him that eateth, for God hath received him. I know and am persuaded by the Lord

Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself, but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. The kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. For meat destroy not the work of God. things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. Rom. xiv. 3. 14. 17. 20. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient. Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience' sake; for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof. Whether, therefore, ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. x. 23. 25, 26. 31. Let no man, therefore, judge you in meat or in drink. (Touch not, taste not, handle not, which all are to perish with the using.) Why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances after the commandments and doctrines of men? Col. ii. 16. 21, 22. 20. Some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving: for every creature of God is good. 1 Tim. iv. 3, 4.

4 The life thereof, &c.] It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood. Lev. iii. 17. Moreover, ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl, or of beast, in any of your dwellings. Lev. vii. 26. And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood, I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof. Lev. xvii. 10. 14. Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood. Lev. xix. 26. Only ye shall not eat the blood, ye shall pour it upon the earth as water. Be sure that thou eat not the blood, for the blood is the life, and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh. Deut. xii. 16. 23. Ye shall not eat of any thing that dieth of itself. Deut. xiv. 21. Only thou shalt not eat the blood: thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water. Deut. xv. 23. And Saul said, disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat, and sin not against the Lord in eating with the blood. 1 Sam. xiv. 34. Abstain from things strangled, and from blood. (See) that ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood.

Acts xv. 20. 29. Every creature of God is good. 1 Tim. iv. 4.

5 Of every beast, &c.] If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die, the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten, but the owner of the ox shall be quit. But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. Exod. xxi. 12. 28, 29.

At the hand of man, &c.] And the Lord said unto Cain, where is Abel, thy brother? What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. Gen. iv. 9. 10. Neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour. Lev. xix. 16. Ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death, but he shall be surely put to death. So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are, for blood it defileth the land, and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it. Numb. Xxxv. 31. 33.

Every man's brother, &c.] And (God) hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth. Acts xvii. 26.

6 By man, &c.] He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. Exod. xxi. 12. If a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile, thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. Exod. xxi. 14. If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him: if the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him. Exod. xxii. 2, 3. He hath shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people. Lev. xvii. 4. He that "killeth any man" (or "smiteth the life of a man") shall surely be put to death. Lev. xxiv. 17. And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood; and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge. But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer, he shall not be guilty of blood. Numb. xxxv. 25, 26, 27. Thou (Solomon) knowest what Joab, the son of Zeruiah, did to me (said David), and to the two captains of the hosts

of Israel, unto Abner, the son of Ner, and unto Amasa, the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war, in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle, that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace. And Joab filed unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar: so Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, went up, and fell upon him, and slew him. 1 Kings ii. 5, 6. 28. 34. All they that take the sword, shall perish with the sword. Matt. xxvi. 52. If thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he (the magistrate) beareth not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Rom. xiii. 4. He that killeth with the sword, must be killed with the sword. Rev. xiii. 10.

In the image of God, &c.] See chap. i. 26, 27. Gen. v. 1. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight, that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Ps. li. 4. Therewith (with the tongue) curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. James iii. 9.

7 Be fruitful, &c.] See verses 1. 9. Gen. i. 28; viii. 17.

9 I establish, &c.] See verses 11. 17. chap. vi. 18. I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. Gen. xvii. 7, 8. In blessing, I will bless thee; and in multiplying, I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies. Gen. xxii. 17. With everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, for this is as the waters of Noah unto me; for as I have sworn, that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn, that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee: for the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the

Lord that hath mercy on thee. Isa. liv. 8, 9, 10. Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon, and of the stars, for a light by night; which divideth the sea, when the waves thereof roar: the Lord of Hosts is his name. If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Jer. xxxi. 35, 36. Thus saith the Lord, if ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season, then may also my covenant be broken with David, my servant. Jer. xxxiii. 20, 21. Paul, separated unto the Gospel of God, concerning his son Jesus Christ, which was made of the seed of David, according to the flesh; to all that be in Rome. Rom. i. 1. 3. 7.

10 With every living creature, &c.] See verses 15, 16. Gen. viii. 1. Job, chap. xxxviii. throughout; and xli. Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens, and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds: thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep. Ps. xxxvi. 5, 6. The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works. Ps. cxlv. 9. And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than six score thousand persons, that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also much cattle? Jonah iv. 11.

11 I will establish, &c.] I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; neither will I again smite any more every thing living as I have done: while the earth remaineth, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease. Gen. viii. 21, 22. But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word, are kept in store, reserved unto fire, in the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. Seeing, then, that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness? 2 Pet. iii. 7. 11.

Neither shall all flesh, &c.] And all flesh died that moved upon the earth; and every living substance was destroyed which was

upon the face of the ground. Gen. vii. 21. 23. See Gen. viii. 21, 22. and 2 Pet. iii. 7. 11. preced. com.

12 The token, &c.] Ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. Gen. xvii. 11. And the blood (of the paschal lamb) shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are; and when I see the blood, I shall pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you, to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Exod. xii. 13. All the first-born of my children I redeem. And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes; for by strength of hand the Lord brought us forth out of Egypt. Exod. xiii. 15, 16. Now, therefore, "I” (“ Rahab”) pray you, swear unto me, by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that "ye" ("the messengers of Joshua") will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token. Josh. ii. 12. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, drink ye all of it. Matt. xxvi. 26, 27. For I have received of the Lord, that which also I delivered unto you: that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread. And after the same manner, he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood. 1 Cor. xi. 23. 25.

13 I do set my bow, &c.] As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud, in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord; and when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake. Ezek. i. 28. And he that sat was, to look upon, like a jasper and a sardine stone; and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. Rev. iv. 3. And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud; and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire. Rev. x. 1.
