God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, 21 and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's 22 house and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. And Joseph 23 saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon

therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit; and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. Ge. xxxvii. 4. 18, 19, 20. Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil. Ps. lvi. 5.

God meant it unto good.] Be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves (said Joseph to his brethren), that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you, to preserve life: for these two years hath the famine been in the land; and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. And God sent me before you, to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance: so now it was not you that sent me hither, but God; and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. Ge. xlv. 5-8. Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. Ps. lxxvi. 10. He (the Lord) called for a famine upon the land (of Egypt): he broke the whole staff of bread: he sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Ps. cv. 16, 17. It is good for me that I have been afflicted: that I might learn thy statutes. Ps. cxix. 71. I(the Lord) will send him (the Assyrian) against an hypocritical nation; to tread them down like the mire of the streets. Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few. Is. x. 6, 7. Ye men of Israel (said Peter); (Jesus of Nazareth) Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain.

Ac.

ii. 22, 23. Ye men of Israel (continued Peter), why marvel ye at "this?" ("the healing of the lame man"). The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go: but ye denied the Holy One, and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you, and killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead: whereof we are witnesses. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Ac. iii. 12-15. 26. We know that all things work together for good to them

that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Ro. viii. 28.

21 I will nourish you.] Thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen (said Joseph to his brethren), and thou shalt be near unto me, thou and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast: and there will I nourish thee, &c. Ge. xlv. 10, 11. And Joseph nourished his father and his brethren, and all his father's houshold with bread, according to their families. Ge. xlvii. 12. Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. Mat. v. 44. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Mat. vi. 14. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good: therefore, if thine enemy hunger, feed him: if he thirst, give him drink for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Ro. xii. 20, 21. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 1 Th. v. 15. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye may inherit a blessing. 1 Pe. iii. 9.

Kindly unto them.] And his (Shechem's) soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel. Ge. xxxiv. 3. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, &c. Is. xl. 2.

23 The children also of Machir, &c.] He also (i. e. Manasseh), shall become a people, and he also shall be great (said Jacob). Ge. xlviii. 19. His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk. Ge. xlix. 12. And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto the half tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about. And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it. Nu. xxxii. 33. 39. There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh (for he was the firstborn of Joseph); to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan. Jos. xvii. 1. After this

18 wept when they spake unto him. And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy 19 servants. And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the 20 place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but

arms of his (Joseph's) hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; even by the mighty God of thy father who shall help thee. Ge. xlix. 25. Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Mat. x. 42. The King (in the description of the last judgment) shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Mat. xxv. 40. And when the ten heard "it" (the "ambitious suit" of Zebedee's sons), they began to be much displeased with James and John. Mar. x. 41. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men; especially unto them who are of the houshold of faith. As many as walk according to "this rule" ("the dependence on Christ only"), peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. Ga. vi. 10. 16. Though I might be much bold in Christ, to enjoin thee that which is convenient, yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee; yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord. Philem. 8. 20.

Wept when they spake unto him.] And they (Joseph's brethren) said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore behold also, his blood is required. And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter. And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. Ge. xlii. 21-24. Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me I pray you; and they came near: and he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt: now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life: it was not you that sent me hither, but God. Ge. xlv. 4, 5. 8.

18 Fell down before his face.] Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land (of Canaan). Ge. xxiii. 12. See Ge. xxxvii. 7— 11. and com. &c. Joseph's brethren came and bowed down themselves before him, with their faces to the earth. Ge. xlii. 6. Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house (for he was yet there), and they fell before him on

the ground. Ge. xliv. 14. Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him: for they were troubled at his presence. Ge. xlv. 3.

19 Fear not.] See Ge. xlv. 5. Be of good cheer (said Jesus to his disciples, as he walked on the sea) it is I; be not afraid. Mat. xiv. 27. But they (the apostles who heard that Jesus was risen, from the two disciples going to Emmaus) were terrified and affrighted (when Jesus himself stood in the midst of them), and supposed that they had seen a spirit: and he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? La. xxiv. 37, 38.

For am I in the place of God.] And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel (who said, Give me children, or I die); and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? Ge. xxx. 3. To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence (saith God), their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. De. xxxii. 35. And it came to pass when the king of Israel (Jehoram) had read the letter (sent by the king of Syria, that Naaman might be cured of his leprosy), that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy ? 2 Ki. v. 7. Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only. Job xxxiv. 18, 19. 29. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Ro. xii. 19. know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me; I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. He. x. 30.

24 Joseph's knees. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the 25 land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will
