at night he shall divide the spoil. All these are the twelve tribes 28

Ard. Ge. xlvi. 21. Of Benjamin he (Moses) said, The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him, and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders. De. xxxiii. 12.

A wolf.] The people (of Israel, said Balaam to Balak) shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain. Nu. xxiii. 24. When the children of Israel cried unto the Lord (being in subjection to Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years), the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man left-handed; and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab. But Ehud made him a dagger, which had two edges, of a cubit long; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh. And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab, and Eglon was a very fat man: and when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present: but he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him. And Ehud came unto him, and he was sitting in a summer parlour which he had for himself alone. And Ehud put forth his left hand and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly, &c. &c. Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them. And Ehud escaped. And they (the children of Israel) went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over: and they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Ju. iii. 15-30. And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah. And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men. And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day. And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men. Ju. xx. 20-25. There was a man of Benjamin, and he had a son whose name was Saul (king of Israel). 1 Sa. ix. 1, 2. Then (when Jabesh Gilead was attacked by Naash the Ammonite) came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul. And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly: and he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the

coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul, and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen: and the fear of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out with one consent. And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, Tomorrow by that time the sun be hot ye shall have help. Therefore the men of Jabesh said (unto Nahash the Ammonite who had given them seven days' respite), Tomorrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you (he had threatened to thrust out all their right eyes). And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day and it came to pass that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together. 1 Sa. xi. 4-11. See also Nu. xiv. 15. 17. As for Saul (of Tarsus), he made havock of the Church, entering into every house, and haling men and women, committed them to prison. Ac. viii. 3. And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest. Ac. ix. 1. Circumcised (was Saul or Paul) the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law a Pharisee. Phi. iii. 5.

At night he shall divide the spoil.] A lion out of the forest shall slay them (the rebellious Jews), and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them; a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased. Je. v. 6. There is a conspiracy of her (Jerusalem's) prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls: they have taken the treasure and precious things: they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gains. Ez. xxii. 25. 27. Therefore I will be unto them (for abusing my benefits) as a lion, as a leopard by the way will I observe them: I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion the wild beast shall tear them. Ho. xiii. 7, 8. Her princes within "her" (“ Jerusalem") are roaring lions: her judges are evening wolves, they gnaw not the bones till the morrow. Zep. iii. 3. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Mat. vii. 15. Behold, I send you forth (said Christ to his apostles) as sheep in the midst

the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the 26 womb: The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of thy progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of 27 the head of him that was separate from his brethren. Jon. ii. 6. He (the Christ's, and Christ is God's. 1 Co. iii. 21-23. Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee. Be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee; and blessed be he that blesseth thee. Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above. And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother and it shall come to pass, when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck. Ge. xxvii. 27. 29. 39, 40. Nu. vi. 2, 3. &c. He (the Lord) sent a man before them (Israel), even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him. The king sent and loosed him, even the ruler of the people, and let him go free; he made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: to bind his princes at his pleasure, and teach his senators wisdom. Ps. cv. 17-22. of wolves. Mat. x. 16. I know this (said Paul to the elders of Ephesus) that after my departing, shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Ac. xx. 29. 28 The twelve tribes, &c.] Sec Nu. xxiii. 24. under "Wolf," verse 27. The king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen, and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews. And it was written (according to all that Mordecai commanded) unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies, and rulers of the provinces, which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces. The king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province, that would assault them, both little ones, and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey. Es. viii. 7. 9. 11. See Es. ix. and x. Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord God, This is the day whereof I have spoken. And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire, and burn the weapons, both the shields and the buckler, the bows and the arrows, and the hand-staves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years, so that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire; and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord God. Ez. xxxix. 8, 9, 10. Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil (Jerusalem) shall be divided in the midst of thee: for I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem, on the east and the Mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east, and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south; and ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal. Yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my

God shall come, and all the saints with thee. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark; but it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night; but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. Zec. xiv. 1-7.

Every one according to his blessing.] The sons of Jacob were twelve. Ge. xxxv. 22. The purchase of the field and of the 32 cave that is therein was from the children of Heth. And when 33 Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.

33 Made an end of commanding.] See verses 1. 24-26. And Joshua said unto all

the people, Behold, this stone (a great stone which he had set up under an oak) shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God. So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance. And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old. These all (Abraham and his posterity) died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth; for they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country: and truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is an heavenly; wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city. He. xi. 13-16.
