Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. Moreover, 22 I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.

Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart, and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he), a man of the throne of Israel. 1 Ki. ii. 2, 3, 4. Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help or salvation. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth, in that very day his thoughts perish, Ps. cxlvi. 3, 4. Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live for ever? But my words and my statutes which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? And they returned and said, Like as the Lord of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us. Zec. i. 5, 6. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant (said Simeon, taking the child Jesus up in his arms) depart in peace, according to thy word, for mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Lu. ii. 29, 30. David, after he had served his own generation, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption. Ac. xiii. 36. I am now ready to be offered (said St. Paul), and the time of my departure is at hand. 2 Ti. iv. 6. This Melchisedec, without father, without mother, without descent (i. e. without pedigree, the line of his family is not mentioned, neither his birth, nor his death), having neither beginning of days, nor end of life, but made like unto the Son of God, abideth a priest continually. Here, men that die receive tithes; but there, he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. He. vii. 3. 8. And they truly (the Levitical priesthood), were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death; but this man (Jesus), because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. He. vii. 23, 24, 25. I think it meet (said St. Peter), as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up, by putting you in remembrance. Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. 2 Pe. i. 13, 14.

God shall be with you.] That nation (Egypt) whom thou shalt serve will I judge; but afterward shall they (Israel), come out with great substance. Ge. xv. 14. Behold, I am with thee (said the Lord to Jacob), and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Ge. xxviii. 7

15. I will go down with thee into Egypt, and will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. Ge. xlvi. 4. See De. chap. i. And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee: he will be with thee (said Moses to Joshua), fear not: neither be dismayed. De. xxxi. 8. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee (said the Lord to Joshua) all the days of thy life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with thee; I will not fail thee nor forsake thee. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage: be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Jos. i. 5. 9. And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know, that as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee. Jos. iii. 7. And behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth (said Joshua), and ye know in all your hearts, and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof. Jos. xxiii. 14. See Jos. chap. xxiv. blessed be my rock salvation be exalted.

The Lord liveth; and and let the God of my Ps. xviii. 46.

Land of your fathers.] Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan ; and into the land of Canaan they came. xii. 5. Sojourn in this land (said the Lord to Isaac), and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father. Ge. xxvi. 3. Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. Ge. xxxvii. 1.

22 Given to thee.] And he bought a parcel of a field where he had spread his tent at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money. xxxiii. 19. He (who has two wives, one beloved and another hated,) shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath, for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his. De. xxi. 17. The bones of Joseph which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for an hundred pieces of silver, and it became the inheritance of the children of

Joseph. Jos. xxiv. 32. Judah prevailed over his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph's. 1 Ch. v. 2. Thus saith the Lord God, This shall be the border whereby ye shall inherit the land, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph shall have two portions. Ez. xlvii. 13. Then cometh he (Jesus) to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. John iv. 5.

Amorite, &c.] But in the fourth generation they (Israel) shall come hither again, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. Ge. xv. 16. They (the sons of Jacob) took their (the Shechemites') sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field (being enraged at the humbling of their sister Dinah). Ge. xxxiv. 28. And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the Lord hath blessed me hitherto? And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee. And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power; thou shalt not have one lot only; but the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood and thou shalt cut it down; and the outgoings of it shall be thine, for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong. Jos. xvii. 14-18. So now the Lord God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel. Ju. xi. 23. Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them (saith the Lord), whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks: yet I destroyed his fruit from above and his roots from beneath. Am. ii. 9.

CHAP. XLIX.-Gather yourselves together, &c.] Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and the stranger that is within thy gates (said Moses unto the priests, the sons of Levi), that they may hear, and that they may learn and fear the Lord your God,

and observe to do all the words. Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth. For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you. And evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands. De. xxxi. 12. 28, 29. And this is the blessing wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. De. xxxiii. 1, &c. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him, and he shall shew them his covenant. Ps. xxv. 14. Touch not mine anointed (saith the Lord), and do my prophets no harm. Ps. cv. 15. And it was revealed in mine ears by the Lord of hosts, Surely this iniquity (trusting in human means, and not in God,) shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord God of hosts (respecting Judah), Is. xxii. 14. Who hath believed our report! and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? Is. liii. 1. The king (Nebuchadnezzar) answered unto Daniel and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret (of my dream). Da. ii. 47. In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar, and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long, and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision. Da. x. 1. Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. Am. iii, 7. And it was revealed unto him (Simeon) by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Lu. ii. 26. For therein (in the Gospel of Christ) is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith. As it is written, The just shall live by faith; for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Ro. i. 17, 18. Let us consider one another, to provoke unto love and to good works, not forsaking the assembling ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another, And so much the more as ye see the day ap proaching. He. x. 24, 25. Let brotherly love continue. He. xiii. 1. After this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven (saith St. John), and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with

me, which said, Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. Re. iv. 1.

Last days.] And now, behold (said Balaam to Balak), I go unto my people. Come, therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people (Israel) shall do to thy people (the Moabites) in the latter days. Nu. xxiv. 14. When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice (for the Lord thy God is a merciful God), he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them. De. iv. 30, 31. I know that after my death (said Moses) ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you: and evil will befall you in the latter days. De. xxxi. 29. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it. Is. ii. 2. Behold, the days come that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store, until this day, shall be carried to Babylon, nothing shall be left, saith the Lord. Is. xxxix. 6. The anger of the Lord shall not return until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart. In the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. Je. xxiii. 20. There is a God in heaven (said Daniel to Nebuchadnezzar) that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king what shall be in the latter days. And he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass. Da. ii. 28, 29. Now I am come (said the angel to Daniel) to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days; for yet the vision is for many days. Da. x. 14. In the last days it shall come to pass that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. Mi. iv. 1. And it shall come to pass in the last days (saith God), I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Ac. ii. 17. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Ti. iv. 1. This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 Ti. iii. 1. (God) hath in those last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. He. i. 2.

2 Hearken unto Israel, &c.] Come ye children, hearken unto me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Ps. xxxiv. 11. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother, for they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. Pr. i. 8, 9. Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding; for I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law; for I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother; he taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words; keep my commandments and live. Pr. iv. 1-4. My son attend unto wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding. Pr. v. 1. My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother. Pr. vi. 20. My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Hearken unto me now, therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. Pr. vii. 1. 24. Now, therefore, hearken unto me, O ye children, for blessed are they that keep my ways. Pr. viii. 32. Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. My son give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. xxiii. 22. 26.

3 My firstborn.] Leah conceived and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben (i. e. see a son"). Ge. xxix. 32. Reuben, Jacob's first-born (came into Egypt with Jacob and his sons). Ge. xlvi. 8. This is the first-born (said Joseph to his father, speaking of his son Manasseh), put thy right hand upon his head. Ge. xlviii. 18. (Of) the children of Reuben, Israel's eldest son, were numbered, forty and six thousand and five hundred. Nu. i. 20, 21. Reuben the eldest son of Israel: the children of Reuben, Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, Carmi. Nu. xxvi. 5.

These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar and Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 1 Ch. ii. 1, 2. Now the sons of Reuben, the first-born of Israel; (for he was the first-born; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright, &c.), The sons I say of Reuben, the first-born of Israel, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. 1 Ch. v. 1. 3.

My might.] He (who may have two wives, the one beloved, the other hated,) shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the first-born, by giving him a double portion, for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the first-born is his. Ps. cv. 36. 4 Unstable as water.] Let him (that lack-ber, they shall gather themselves together eth wisdom) ask in faith, nothing wavering; for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. A doubleminded man is unstable in all his ways. Ja. i. 6. 8.

"These" ("false teachers") as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin, beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children. 2 Pe. ii. 14. Beloved, account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given unto him, hath written unto you. As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction. 2 Pe. iii. 15, 16.

Thou shalt not excel.] See Ge. xlvi. 8. and Nu. xxxii. Let Reuben live and not die, and let not his men be few. De. xxxiii. 6.

Because thou wentest up, &c.] See Ge. XXXV. 22. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field or his man-servant, &c. De. v. 21. Cursed be be that lieth with his father's wife; because he uncovereth his father's skirt; and all the people shall say, Amen. De. xxvii. 20. Forasmuch as he (Reuben) defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel. 1 Ch. v. 1. It is reported commonly, that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles. 1 Co. v. 1.

5 Simeon and Levi are brethren.] And she (Leah) conceived again, and bare a son (after Reuben), and she called his name Simeon. And she conceived again, and bare a son, and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons, therefore was his name called Levi. Ge. xxix. 33, 34. It came to pass on the third day, when they (the men of Shechem) were sore (after circumcision), that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

60 my soul, &c.] O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength (said Deborah in her song). Ju. v. 21. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Ps. xlii. 5. 11. See Ps. xliii. 5. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Ps. ciii. 1. My heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. Je. iv. 19. I will say to my soul (said the rich man in the parable), Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. Lu. xii. 19.

Come not thou, &c.] See com. on verse 5, for Ge. xxxiv. 30. Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels. Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against thee. Ps. v. 10. I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers. I have hated the congregation of evil doers, and will not sit with the wicked. Ps. xxvi. 4, 5. Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts. Ps. xxviii. 3. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law? They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood. Ps. xciv. 20, 21. Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God; depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. Ps. cxxxix. 19. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;

Secret.] Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour secretly. And all the people shall say, Amen. De. xxvii. 24. Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men. Ps. xxvi. 9. Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity. Ps. lxiv. 2. I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone, because of thy hand; for thou hast filled me with indignation. Je. xv. 17.

Unto their assembly.] Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. Ps. i. 1. Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men. Ps. xxvi. 9. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law? Ps. xciv. 20. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? or what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Co. vi. 14.

Honour.] My heart is glad, and my glory rejoiced; my flesh also shall rest in hope. Ps. xvi. 9. Thou hast girded me with gladness, to the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever. Ps. xxx. 12. Awake up, my glory; awake psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

Ps. lvii. 8.

7 Be their anger.] Then Amnon hated "her" ("Tamar") exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone. And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar. And it came to pass, after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king's sons. And Absalom came to the king (David, his father), and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant. And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And VOL. I.

he pressed him: howbeit, he would not go, but blessed him. Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee? But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not. 2 Sa. xiii. 15. 22-28. He that hateth, dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him: when he speaketh fair believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart. Pr. xxvi. 24, 25. A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both. Pr. xxvii. 3.

I will divide them.] The second lot came forth to Simeon (Benjamin's was the first), even for the tribe of the children of Simeon, according to their families; and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah, &c. Jos. xix. 1, &c. The children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the Lord, these cities (eight and forty in number) and their suburbs. Jos. xxi. 3, &c. The sons of Simeon were Nemuel (or Jemuel), and Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, and Shaul. And the house of their fathers increased greatly; and they went unto the entrance of Gedor, even unto the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks; and they found fat pasture, and good; and the land was wide, and quiet, and peaceable; for they of Ham had dwelt there of old. 1 Chr. iv. 24. 38, 39, 40. And they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, these cities (to the Levites), which are called by their names. 1 Chr. vi. 65.

8 Shall praise, &c.] And she (Leah) conceived again, and bare a son; and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah. Ge. xxix. 35. Then Judah came near unto him (Joseph, who said, Benjamin shall be my servant), and said, Oh, my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, &c. We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one, and his brother is dead. And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me.
