Ephraim in his right hand towards Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them 14 near unto him. And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for 15 Manasseh was the firstborn. And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the

14 His right hand.] Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power. Thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy (said Moses in his song). Ex. xv. 6. The Lord said unto my lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Ps. cx. 1. The right hand of the Lord is exalted: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. Ps. cxviii. 16.

And laid it upon Ephraim's head.] And thou shalt bring the Levites before the Lord, and the children of Israel shall put their hands upon the Levites. Nu. viii. 10. And

I have taken the Levites for all the firstborn of the children of Israel. Nu. viii. 18. And Joshua, the son of Nun, was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands upon him. De. xxxiv. 9. Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray; and the disciples rebuked them; and he laid his hands on them, and departed thence. Mat. xix. 13. 15. And he (Jesus) could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. Mar. vi. 5. They (Christ's Apostles) shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mar. xvi. 18. Now, when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. Lu. iv. 40. And "he" ("Jesus") laid his hands on "her" (a" woman bowed together by infirmities"), and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. Lu. xiii. 13. "Whom" ("seven men" of honest report) they (the multitude of disciples) set before the Apostles, and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. Ac. vi. 6. Then (when the Samaritans were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus) laid "they" ("Peter and John") their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. And when Simon (the sorcerer) saw, that through laying on of the apostles' hands, the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. Ac. viii. 17, 18, 19. When "they" ("the prophets and teachers at Antioch") had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them (Barnabas and Saul), they sent them

away. Ac. xiii. 3. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 1 Ti. iv. 14. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. 1 Ti. v. 22.

Guiding his hands wittingly.] I know it, I know it my son, (said Jacob to Joseph, who had told him that Manasseh was his firstborn); he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother (Ephraim) shall be greater than he. Ge.

xlviii. 19.

Firstborn.] Joseph said unto his father, Not so my father (put not thy right hand on Ephraim's head), for this (Manassek) is the firstborn. Ge. xlviii. 18. And Joseph called the name of his first-born Manasseh, for God hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house. Ge. xli. 51. Unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh, and Ephraim, which Asenath, the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On, bare unto him. Ge. xlvi. 20.

15 Blessed Joseph.] The angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads (said Jacob). Ge. xlviii. 16. See verse 9. and com

Did walk.] And Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. Ge. v. 22. 24. with com. And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee. 1 Ki. iii. 6. The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet. Is xxviii. 3. And they (the Jews) shall spread "them" ("the bones of the kings of Judah, &c. &c.) before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried: they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. Je. vii 2. Whether ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cer. x. 31. As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him. Col. ii. 6.

God which fed me all my life long unto this day, The Angel 16

Fed me all my life.] And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then shall the Lord be my God; and this stone which I have set for a pillar shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee. Ge. xxviii. 20, 21, 22. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Ps. xxiii. 1. Trust in the Lord and do good: so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Ps. xxxvii. 3. Bless the Lord, O my soul, who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies, who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. Ps. ciii. 4, 5. There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God: for who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto more than I? Ec. ii. 24, 25. The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. It is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun, all the days of his life, which God giveth him; for it is his portion. Ec. v. 12. 18. All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled. Ec. vi. 7. He (that walketh righteously) shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks, bread shall be given him, his waters shall be sure. Is. xxxiii. 16. Take no thought for your life what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body what ye shall put on; is not the life more than meat? And the body than raiment? Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you: take therefore no thought for the morrow; for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself, sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Mat. vi. 25-34. Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out; and having food and raiment, let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction, and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Ti. vi. 6-10.

16 The angel, &c.] The angel of the Lord found her (Hagar) by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. And the angel of the Lord said unto

her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael (i. e. God shall hear), because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. And he will be a wild man, his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him, and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me. xvi. 7-13. Behold, I am with thee (said God to Jacob in the vision of the ladder) in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land: for I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Ge. xxviii. 15. And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob, and I said, Here am I. And he said, Lift up now thine eyes: all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled, for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee: I am the God of Beth-el, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me. Now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. Ge. xxxi. 11, 12, 13. 24. And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush, and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burned: and when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses! And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither, put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Ex. iii. 2-6. Behold, I send an angel before thee (Israel) to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him and obey his voice: provoke him not, for he will not pardon your transgressions, for my name is in him. Ex. xxiii. 20, 21. And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers, and I said, I will never break my covenant with you: and ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land: ye shall throw down their altars:

which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and

but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have
ye done this? Wherefore I also said, I will
not drive them out from before you but they
shall be as thorns in your sides, and their
gods shall be a snare unto you. And it
came to pass when the angel of the Lord
spake these words unto all the children of
Israel, that the people lifted up their voice
and wept. Ju. ii. 1-4. Then (when Gideon
had laid the flesh and the unleavened cakes
upon the rock) the angel of the Lord put forth
the end of the staff that was in his hand, and
touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes,
and there rose up fire out of the rock, and
consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes.
Then the angel of the Lord departed out of
his sight. And when Gideon perceived that
he was an angel of the Lord, Gideon said,
Alas! O Lord God; for because I have seen
an angel of the Lord face to face. And the
Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee, fear
not, thou shalt not die. Then Gideon built
an altar there unto the Lord, and called it
Jehovah-shalom (i. e. the Lord send peace)
unto this day, it is yet in Ophrah of the
Abi-ezrites. Ju. vi. 21-24. The angel of
the Lord did no more appear to Manaoh and
his wife (after he had ascended in the flame of
the altar). Then Manoah knew that he was
an angel of the Lord; and Manoah said unto
his wife, We shall surely die, because we
have seen God. Ju. xiii. 21, 22. The angel
of the Lord encampeth round about them that
fear him, and delivereth them. The Lord
redeemeth the soul of his servants, and none
of them that trust in him shall be desolate.
Ps. xxxiv. 7. 22. The Lord shall preserve
thee from all evil, he shall preserve thy soul.
Ps. cxxi. 7. As for our Redeemer, the Lord
of hosts is his name, the holy One of Israel. Is.
xlvii. 4. In all their afflictions he was
afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved
them in his love, and in his pity he re-
deemed them, and he bare them, and carried
them all the days of old. Is. lxiii. 9. Yea,
he (Jacob) had power over the angel, and
prevailed; he wept, and made supplication
unto him.
He found him in Beth-el, and
there he spake with us: even the Lord God
of hosts the Lord is his memorial. Ho. xii.
4, 5. Behold, I will send my messenger, and
he shall prepare the way before me, and the
Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to
his temple, even the messenger of the cove-
nant, whom ye delight in, behold, he shall
come, saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. iii. 1.
And when forty years were expired, there
appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount
Sina, an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire
in a bush: when Moses saw it, he wondered
at the sight, and as he drew near to behold it,
the voice of the Lord came unto him, saying,

I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet, for the place where thou standest is holy ground. I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? The same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in a bush. Ac. vii. 30-35. (Our fathers) did all drink the same spiritual drink (for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ). Neither let us tempt Christ as some of "them" ("the Israelites") also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. 1 Co. x. 4. 9.

Redeemed me.] My soul shall make her boast in the Lord, the humble shall hear thereof and be glad. Ps. xxxiv. 2. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Mat. vi. 13. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. John xvii. 15. Not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the spirit; even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. Ro. viii. 23. Ge. xxxii. 28. All the people of the earth shall see, that thou art called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of thee (if obedient). De. xxviii. 10. If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Ch. vii. 14. Why shouldst thou be as a man astonished, as a mighty man that cannot save? Yet thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us; and we are called by thy name: leave us not. Je. xiv. 9. In that day (when Edom is destroyed for their pride) I will raise up the tabernacle of David

Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand 17 upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head. And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for 18 this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head. And his 19

I will build again the tabernacle of David which is fallen down, and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up, that the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Ac. xv. 17. Grow.] And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly. These are the families of the sons of Ephraim, according to those that were numbered of them, thirty and two thousand and five hundred. Nu. xxvi. 34. 37.

A multitude in the midst of the earth.] Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well, whose branches run over the wall. Ge. xlix. 22. Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children: but in Isaac shall thy seed be called, that is they which are children of the flesh, these are not the children of God, for the children (Esau and Jacob) being not yet born, neither having done any good, or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth. Ro. ix. 7, 8. 11.
