And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof. They shall also make gardens and eat the fruit of them; and I will plant them upon their land; and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God. Am. ix. 14, 15.

Everlasting possession.] I will give unto thee (said God to Abram), and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. He that is born in thine house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. Ge. xvii. 8. 13.

5 Two sons.] See verse 1, and com. Divide this land (said the Lord to Joshua) for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh. Jos. xiii. 7. For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land (on the other side Jordan, which was allotted as the inheritance of two tribes and a half), save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle, and for their substance. Jos. xiv. 4. See Jos. xvi. and xvii. throughout.

Are mine.] And ye shall be holy unto me (said the Lord), for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine. Le. xx. 26. These are the names of the men that shall stand with you (said God to Moses); of the children of Joseph; of Ephraim; Elishama, the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred; of the children of Manasseh that were numbered of them, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred. Nu. i. 5. 10. 32-35. The sons of Joseph after their families were Manasseh and Ephraim; of the sons of Manasseh; of Machir the family of the Machirites; of Gilead (the son of Machir) come the family of the Gileadites, &c. &c. These are the families of Manasseh, and those that were numbered of them, fifty and two thousand and seven hundred. These are the sons of Ephraim after their families; of Shuthelah the family of the Shuthalhites; of Becher the family of the Bachrites; of Tahan the family of the Tahan

ites, &c. &c. These are the families of the sons of Ephraim, according to those that were numbered of them, thirty and two thousand and five hundred. Nu. xxvi. 28-37. See Jos. xiv. 4. preced. com. and Jos. xvi. and xvii. Now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not, for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. Is. xliii. 1. Now when I passed by thee (said God to Jerusalem under the similitude of an helpless infant) and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love, and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness; yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord God, and thou becamest mine. Ez. xvi. 8. And they (that fear the Lord) shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels, and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Mal. iii. 17. I will be a father unto you (who touch not the unclean thing), and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 2 Co. vi. 18. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. Eph. i. 5.

Reuben and Simeon.] Now the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright; for Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler, but the birthright was Joseph's). The sons I say of Reuben were Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 1 Ch. v. 1-3. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand; of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand; of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand; of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand; of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand; of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand; of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand. And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above; and by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother.
