7 these same words. And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do ac8 cording to this thing: Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or 9 gold? With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let 10 him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen. And he said,

(said Jezebel to Ahab.) And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard. 1 Ki. xxi. 6.

7 Wherefore saith my lord.] See Ge. xxxiv. 25. 30, 31; XXXV. 22; xxxvii. 18-32; and xxxviii. 16, 17, 18. The Lord God of hosts, the Lord God of gods, he knoweth (said the children of Reuben, and of Gad, and Manasseh, to the heads of the thousands of Israel), and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the Lord, (save us not this day,) that we have built us an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer thereon burnt-offering or meat-offering, or if to offer peace-offerings thereon, let the Lord himself require it; and if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the Lord God of Israel? For the Lord hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the Lord: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the Lord. Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burntoffering, nor for sacrifice: but that it may be a witness between us and you, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings; that your children may not say to our children, Ye have no part in the Lord. Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offerings, for meat-offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you. God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord. Jos. xxii. 22-29. Joab answered and said (to the wise woman at Abel, who accused him of seeking to destroy a city, and a mother in Israel), Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up, or destroy; the matter is not so. 2 Sa. xx. 20, 21. And Hazael said (when he saw Elisha weeping, and heard him foretelling of his own future atrocities), But what! is thy servant a dog that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, The Lord hath shewed me that
