Ge. xlii. 30. 33. He (God) hath made me a father to Pharaoh (said Joseph), and ruler of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. Asenath.] See verse 45. also Ge. xlvi. 20. preced. com.

51 Called the name.] And now thy two sons Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt, are mine (said Jacob to Joseph); and Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near unto him; and Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head: guiding his hands wittingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn; and he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh. Ge. xlviii. 5. 13, 14. 20. "His" ("Joseph's") glory (said Moses) is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.

Forget all my toil.] For his (God's) anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Let him (that is ready to perish) drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. Pr. xxxi. 7. the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. And the seven years 53 of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended. And 54 the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. And when all the land of Egypt was famished, 55 the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. And 56

52 Called he, &c.] See chap. xxix. 32-35; xxx. 6. 13. and com. And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees. Ge. 1. 23.

Ephraim.] The Angel which redeemed me (said Jacob), bless "the lads" ("Ephraim and Manasseh"); and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac: and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. And his father (Jacob) refused (to prefer the firstborn, Manasseh), and said, I know it (that Manasseh is the firstborn), my son: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. Ge. xlviii. 16. 19. Joseph is a fruitful bough (said Jacob), even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall. Ge. xlix. 22. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God; speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her that her warfare is accomplished, and her iniquity is pardoned for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. Is. xl. 1, 2.

The land of my affliction.] He (the Lord) sent a man before "them" ("Israel"), even Joseph, who was sold for a servant; whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron. Ps. cv. 17, 18. Woe to them that are at ease in Zion; that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the afflictions of Joseph. Am. vi. 6. God was with him (Joseph), and delivered him out of all his afflictions. Ac. vii. 10.

53 Seven years of plenteousness.] See verses 29.31. How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! as a dream when one awaketh. Ps. lxxiii. 19, 20. But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation. Lu. xvii. 25.

54 Seven years of dearth.] See verses 3, 4. 6, 7. 27. And there (in the land of Goshen) will I nourish thee (for yet there are five years of famine), lest thou and thy houshold, and all that thou hast, come to poverty (said Joseph, as a message to his father by his brethren). Ge. xlv. 11. He (the Lord) called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread. Ps. cv. 16. Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and

Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance. Ac. vii. 11.

According as Joseph had said.] See verse 30. And the dearth was in all lands.] Behold, I have heard (said Jacob) that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither (my sons), and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan; and Joseph was governor over the land (of Egypt), and he it was that sold to all the people of the land; and Joseph's brethren came and bowed down themselves before him, with their faces to the earth. Ge. xlii. 2. 5, 6. And the famine was sore in the land. Ge. xliii. 1. For yet there are five years of famine (said Joseph to his brethren, when sending them for his father). Ge. xlv. 11. And there was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. Ge. xlvii. 13.

55 Famished.] And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver. We boiled my son, (said a woman who cried Help my lord, O king! and to whom the king said, What aileth thee?), and did eat him, &c. 2 Ki. vi. 25. 29. The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth: Judah mourneth; the gates thereof languish ; they are black unto the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up; because the ground is chapt; for there was no rain on the earth; the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass. Jer. xiv. 1, 2. 4. 6. Even the seamonsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones; the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness; the tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst; the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them; the hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children; they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people. La. iv. 3, 4. 10.

Go unto Joseph.] See verse 40, 41. The king sent and loosed him, even the ruler of the people, and let him go free; he made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance;

the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine 57 waxed sore in the land of Egypt. And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.

CHAPTER XLII.

1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said

to bind his princes at his pleasure, and teach his senators wisdom. Ps. cv. 20-22. Lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mat. iii. 17. While he yet spake, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them (at the transfiguration on the mount); and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. Mat. xvii. 5. The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. Of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. John i. 14. 16. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Phi. iv. 19. For it pleased the Father that in him (Christ) should all fulness dwell. Col. i. 19.

56 The face of the earth.] And it shall come to pass, after the end of seventy years, that the Lord will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. Is. xxiii. 17. Then said he unto me (said Zechariah of the angel), This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth. Ze. v. 3. For as a snare shall "it" ("the second coming of Christ") come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Lu. xxi. 35. And (God) hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation. Ac. xvii. 26.

Sold unto the Egyptians.] Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land. Ge. xlii. 6. And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house. And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth. And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail. And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds,

and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year. When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate. And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them by Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them. Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day, and your land, for Pharaoh; lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your houshold, and for food for your little ones. Ge. xlvii. 14-24.

57 All countries.] When Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt; get you down thither, and buy for us from thence. And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt; but Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest, peradventure, mischief befall him. And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came. Ge. xlii. 1-5. As for you (said Joseph to his brethren), ye thought evil against me, but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. Ge. 1. 20. Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (said Moses to the Lord, in prayer); look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin; lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness. De. ix. 27, 28. He (the Lord) called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before "them" ("Israel"), even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Ps. cv. 16, 17.

unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? And he said, 2 Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. Ex. v. 19. And all the people saw the thunderings and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they removed and stood afar off. Ex. xx. 18. So when he (Elijah) saw “that” (“what Jezebel had threatened") he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. 1 Ki. xix. 3. When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb. Yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound. Ho. v. 13. When they (with whom Paul was in conference) saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; they gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship. Ga. ii. 7. 9.

Why do ye look one upon another?] And the Lord said unto Joshua (who had sunk in despair because the Israelites had turned their backs before their enemies), Get thee up; wherefore liest thou upon thy face? Jos. vii. 10. And it came to pass, at the seven years' end (during which time the Shunammite woman sojourned from her home, by the advice of Elisha, to avoid the famine), that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land. And the king talked with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done. 2 Ki. viii. 3, 4. Arise (said Shechaniah to Ezra), for this matter (our strange marriages) belongeth unto thee. We also will be with thee. Be of good courage, and do it. Ezr. x. 4. Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there. Jer. viii. 14.

2 Get you down thither.] And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. And Judah spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt send our brother (Benjamin) with us, we will go down and buy thee food. Ge. xliii. 2.4. Haste ye (said Joseph to his brethren), and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not. Ge. xlv. 9.

That we may live.] And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we and thou, and also our little ones. Ge. xliii. 8. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Ps. cxviii. 17. Is. xxxviii. 1. It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone (said Jesus to Satan), but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Mat. iv. 4.

4 Benjamin, &c.] And they (Jacob and family) journeyed from Beth-el, and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also. And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin; and Rachel died, &c. Ge. xxxv. 16-19.

Lest peradventure mischief befall him.] And he (Jacob) said (to Reuben), My son (Benjamin) shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone; if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. Ge. xlii. 38. the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of
