18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt 19 eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat

to fly"). Job v. 6, 7. Man that is born of a woman is of" few days" (or "short of days") and full of trouble. Job xiv. 1. How oft is the candle of the wicked put out? And how oft cometh their destruction upon them? God distributeth sorrows in his anger. Job xxi. 17. For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled; for all our days are passed away in thy wrath. Ps. xc. 7. 9. For what hath man, of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea his heart taketh not rest in the night; this also is vanity. Eccles. ii. 22, 23. All his days also, he (the rich man) eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness. Eccles. v. 17. In the world ye shall have tribulation (said Jesus to his disciples), but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John xvi. 33.

18 Thorns, &c.] Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you, but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you. Josh. xxiii. 13. Whose harvest (the harvest of the foolish) the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns. Job v. 5. Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and "cockle" (or "the strength thereof), instead of barley. Job xxxi. 40. Thorns and snares are in the ways of the froward. Prov. xxii. 5. And lo "it" ("the field of the slothful man") was all grown over with thorns; and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Prov. xxiv. 31. And I will lay "it" ("the Lord's vineyard") waste. It shall not be pruned nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns. Isa. v. 6. And it shall come to pass in "that day" ("the day of Judah's visitation"), that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns. Isa. vii. 23. Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers. Isa. xxxii. 13. For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. Jer. iv. 3. They (the spoilers of God's heritage) have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns. Jer. xii. 13. And some (seeds) fell among thorns (said Jesus in the parable), and the thorns sprung up and choked them. Matt. xiii. 7. But that (earth) which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing. Heb. vi. 8. Herb of the field, &c.] The Lord gave and

the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord. In all this Job sinned not, nor "charged God foolishly" (or "attributed folly to God"). Job i. 21, 22. Thou turnest man to destruction, and sayest, return, ye children of men. Ps. xc. 3. He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man. Ps. civ. 14. For one believeth that he may eat all things; another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Rom. xiv. 2.

19 The sweat, &c.] What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under the sun; this sore travail hath God given to the sons of men" to be exercised therewith" ("to afflict them"). Eccles. i. 3. 13. And being in an agony, he (Jesus) prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was, as it were, great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke xxii. 44. Let him (who stole before) labour, working with his hands the thing which is good. Eph. iv. 28. For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail; for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the Gospel of God. 1 Thess. ii. 9. For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work neither should he eat. 2 Thess. iii. 10.

Till thou return, &c.] Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither. Jobi. 21. Thou turnest man to destruction. Ps. xc. 3. Thou hidest thy face, "they" ("man") are troubled: thon takest away their breath they die and return to their dust. Ps. civ. 29. As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour. Eccles. v. 15.

Dust thou art, &c.] See chap. ii. 7. And Abraham answered and said, Behold now I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes. Gen. xviii. 27.

And unto dust, &c.] Give me (said Abraham to the sons of Heth) a possession of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead, out of my sight. Gen. xxiii. 4. If I wait, the grave is mine house (Job's). I have made my bed in the darkness. They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust. Job xvii. 13. 16. And though after my skin, worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God (or, after I shall awake, though this body be destroyed, yet out of my flesh shall I see God"). Job xix. 26. They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them. Job xxi. 26. All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn

Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God 21 make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the Lord God said, 22 Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever; Therefore the Lord God sent 23

again unto dust. Job xxxiv. 15. Thou hast brought me into the dust of death. All they that go down to the dust shall bow before him. Ps. xxii. 15. 29. Thou takest away their breath, they die and return to their dust. Ps. civ. 29. The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. Prov. xxi. 16. All go unto one place, and all turn to dust again. Eccles. iii. 20. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was. Eccles. xii. 7. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame, and everlasting contempt. Dan. xii. 2. Death passed upon all men. Rom. v. 12. Sin hath reigned unto death. Rom. v. 21. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection from the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Cor. xv. 21, 22.

20 Adam called, &c.] See chap. ii. 20. 23. And he (Lamech) called his (son's) name Noah. Gen. v. 29. And the angel of the Lord said unto "her" ("Hagar"), Behold thou art with child, and shalt bear a son and shalt call his name Ishmael (or "God shall hear"), because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. Gen. xvi. 11. And Leah (Jacob's wife) conceived and bare a son, and she called his name "Reuben," (or "see a son"), for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction. Gen. xxix. 32. And she conceived again and bare a son, and she said, now will I praise the Lord; therefore she called his name "Judah" (or " Praise"), and left bearing (or, stood from bearing). Gen. xxix. 35. And it came to pass as her soul was in departing (for she died in childbirth), that she (Rachel) called his name Benoni (or," the son of my sorrow"), but his father (Jacob) called him "Benjamin" (or, "the son of the right hand"). Gen. xxxv. 18. And the child grew, and she (the mother of the child) brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son, and she called his name "Moses" (or, "drawn out"). Exod. ii. 10. When the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, she bare a son (to Elkanah) and called his name "Samuel," (or, "Asked of God"). 1 Sam. i. 20. And she (Mary) shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name "Jesus" (or, “Saviour"), for he shall save his people from their sins. Matt. i. 21. Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name "Emmanuel," which being interpreted is, "God with us." Matt. i. 23.

Of all living, &c.] And he (God) hath made of one blood all nations of men, for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation. Acts xvii. 26.

21 Make coats, &c.] See verse 7. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in God; for he hath clothed "me" ("his church") with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with jewels. Isa. lxi. 10. Now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe. Rom. iii. 22. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: if so be, that being clothed, we shall not be found naked. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Cor. v. 2, 3. 21.

22 As one of us, &c.] See verse 5. and chap. i. 26. And the Lord said, behold the people is one, and they have one language, and this they begin to do, and now nothing will be restrained from them which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. Gen. xi. 6, 7. Where are they? Where are "thy" ("Egypt's") wise men? And let them tell thee now, and let them know what the Lord of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt. The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even they that are the safety of the tribes thereof. Isa. xix. 12, 13. Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the "astrologers" (or, "viewers of the heavens"), the stargazers, the "monthly prognosticators" (or, "that give knowledge concerning the months"), stand up and save thee from these things that shall come upon "thee," (" Babylon"). Isa. xlvii. 12, 13. O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars. Jer. xxii. 23.

Tree of life, &c.] See chap. ii. 9.

Eat and live, &c.] Your heart (of those who praise the Lord) shall live for ever. Ps. xxii.

him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence 24 he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

CHAPTER IV.

1 AND Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, 2 and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was 3 a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that

26. I am that bread of life; this is that bread which came down from heaven, not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead; he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. John vi. 48. 58.

23 To till the ground.] See verse 19. and chap. ii. 5. Cain was a tiller of the ground. When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength. Gen. iv. 2. 12. And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard. Gen. ix. 20. The profit of the earth is for all; the king himself is served by the field. Eccles. v. 9.

24 East of the garden, &c.] And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden. Gen. ii. 8.

Cherubims.] And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold (said God to Israel by Moses). And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy-seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee, from the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims, which are upon the ark of the testimony. Exod. xxv. 18. 20. 22. So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims. 1 Sam. iv. 4. Both the cherubims were of one measure and one size. And he (Solomon) carved "thereon" ("on the doors") cherubims and palm trees, and open flowers. 1 Kings vi. 25. 35. Give ear, O shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock, thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth. Ps. lxxxi. 1. The Lord reigneth, let the people tremble; he sitteth between the cherubims. Ps. xcix. 1. Bless the Lord, O my soul, who maketh his angels spirits, his ministers a flaming fire. Ps. civ. 4. Then "I" ("Ezekiel ") looked, and behold, in the firmament that was above the head of the cherubims, there appeared over them, as it were, a sapphire stone, as the appearance of the likeness of a throne. And he spake unto the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels, even under the cherub, and fill thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims. Ezek. x. 1, 2. And of the angels, he saith, who maketh

his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. Heb. i. 7.

A flaming sword, &c.] And the ass (of Balaam) saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand. Numb. xxii. 23. And it came to pass when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn, in his hand. Josh. v. 13. And David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. 1 Chron. xxi. 16. See Heb. i. 7. preceding commentary.

To keep the way, &c.] Jesus saith unto "him" ("Thomas") I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me. John xiv. 6. Now where remission of these (sins and iniquities) is, there is no more offering for sin. Let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure Heb. x. 18. 22.

CHAP. IV.-1 I have gotten, &c.] And Adam knew his wife again, and she bare a son, and called his name Seth. Gen. iv. 25. See chap. iii. 15. And he (Lamech) called his name Noah, saying, this same shall comfort us. Gen. v. 29. We should love one another, not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother, and wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil and his brother's righteous. John iii. 12.

2 And Abel, &c.] And "he" (“ Jacob”) said unto "him" ("Laban") thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me, for it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude. And “he” (“ Laban") said, what shall I give thee, and Jacob said, thou shalt not give me any thing. If thou wilt do this thing for me (to give him those that might be spotted among the goats, or brown among the sheep) I will again feed and keep thy flock. Gen. xxx. 29, 30, 31. And Israel said unto Joseph, do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? Gen. xxxvii. 13. And Joseph

Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the 4 fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And 5 Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord 6

said, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, the men are shepherds for "their" ("Joseph's brethren") trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks and their herds. Gen. xlvi. 31, 32. And Pharaoh said "unto his" ("Joseph's") brethren, what is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, thy servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers. Gen. xlvii. 3. Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian. Exod. iii. 1. "He" ("the Lord") chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheep-folds: from following the ewes, great with young, he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands. Ps. lxxviii. 70, 71, 72. And the Lord took "me" ("Amos") as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, go prophesy unto my people Israel. Amos vii. 15.

4 Firstlings, &c.] Thou shalt set apart unto the Lord all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast, the males shall be the Lord's. Exod. xiii. 12. All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the first fruits of them which they shall offer unto the Lord, them have I given thee, (Aaron) but the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat thou shalt not redeem, they are holy; thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire for a sweet savour unto the Lord. Numb. xviii. 12. 17. Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase. Prov. iii. 9. Almost all things are by the law purged with blood, and without shedding of blood is no remission. Heb. ix. 22. (Ye were redeemed) with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot; who verily was fore-ordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. 1 Pet. i. 19, 20. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him (the beast), whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Rev. xiii. 8.

Fat thereof, &c.] It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood, all the fat is the Lord's. Lev. iii. 16, 17.

Had respect, &c.] And it came to pass that when the sun went down, and it was

dark, behold a smoking furnace and a "burning lamp" (or "a lamp of fire") that passed between those pieces (of the heifer, the she goat, the ram, and the turtle-dove offered by Abraham) in that same day the Lord made a covenant with Abraham. Gen. xv. 17, 18. And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering, and the fat, which when all the people saw, they shouted and fell on their faces. Lev. ix. 24. And there came out a fire from the Lord and consumed the two hundred and fifty men (appertaining unto Korah.) Numb. xvi. 35. Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes (as a sign to Gideon.) Judg. vi. 21. And call "ye" (" the prophets of Baal") on the name of your gods, and I (Elijah) will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. 1 Kings xviii. 24. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces, and they said, the Lord he is the God, the Lord he is the God. 1 Kings xviii. 39. And David built "there" ("in the threshing floor of Ornan") an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the Lord. And he answered him from heaven by fire. 1 Chron. xxi. 26. Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices. And the glory of the Lord filled the house. 2 Chron. vii. 1. The Lord remember all thy offerings (said the congregation praying for David) and accept thy burnt sacrifice Ps. xx. 3. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts. Heb. xi. 4.

5 Unto Cain, &c.] And Moses was very wrath, and said unto the Lord, respect not thou "their offering" ("that of Dathan and Abiram.") Numb. xvi. 15. See Heb. xi. 4.

Wroth, &c.] And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and behold it was not toward him as before. And (Jacob) said unto "them" ("his wives" Rachel and Leah), I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before. Gen. xxxi. 2. 5. Wrath killeth the foolish man. Job v. 2. Say ye to the righteous that it shall be well with him, for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked, it shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him or done to him. Isa. iii. 10, 11. Is it not lawful for me to do

said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance 7 fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be

what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good (said the Lord of the vineyard to the dissatisfied labourer.) Matt. xx. 15. And he was angry and would not go in (the elder brother in the parable of the prodigal.) As soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. Luke xv. 28. 30. But when the Jews saw the multitudes (who came together to hear the word of God, from Paul and Barnabas) they were filled with envy. Acts xiii. 45.

6 Why art thou wroth?] And David was displeased because the Lord had made a breach upon “Uzza” (“who had put forth his hand to hold the ark of God.") 1 Chron. xiii. 11. Wrath killeth the foolish man. Job v. 2. Come now, let us reason together, saith the Lord (to the people of Judah). Isa. i. 18. What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me? Jer. ii. 5. O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel, a land of darkness? Wherefore say my people we are lords, we will come no more unto thee? Jer. ii. 31. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly (who repined at the mercy of God) and he was very angry. And (Jonah) wished in himself to die, and said it is better for me to die than to live! And God said to Jonah, dost thou well to be angry for the gourd? Thou hast had pity on the gourd for the which thou hast not laboured, and should not I spare Nineveh, that great city? Jonah iv. 1. 8, 9. 11. O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. Mich. vi. 3. Son, thou art ever with me (said the father to the brother of the prodigal), and all that I have is thine. This thy brother was dead, and is alive again, and was lost, and is found. Luke xv. 31, 32.

7 If thou doest well, &c] See I have accepted "thee" (" Lot"). Gen. xix. 21. And Auranah (the Jebusite) said unto the king, the Lord thy God accept “ thee!” (“ David”). 2 Sam. xxiv. 23. And "he" (" Ahaziah") went with Joram, the son of Ahab, to the war, against Hazael, king of Syria, in Ramoth Gilead. And the Syrians wounded Joram. 2 Kings viii. 28. And my servant Job shall pray for you, for him will I accept. Job xlii. 8. It is not good to accept the person of the wicked. Prov. xviii. 5. Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet, surely, I know it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he feareth not before God. Eccles. viii. 12, 13. See verse 5, for

I. iii. 10. 11. Your burnt-offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me, saith the Lord to Judah). Jer. vi. 20. And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice" (or "to sacrifice") is it not evil? And if you offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? Ye brought that (as a sacrifice) which was torn, and the lame, and the sick: thus ye brought an offering! Should I accept this of your hand? Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? Neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. Mal. i. 8. 13. 10. But in every nation, he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is accepted with him. Acts x. 35. To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory, and honour, and immortality, (God will render) eternal life. Glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the "Gentile" (or "the Greek"). Rom. ii. 7. 10. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Rom. xii. 1. he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God. Rom. xiv. 18. I have written the more boldly unto you, as putting you in mind, that the "offering up" (or "sacrificing") of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. xv. 16. (He hath chosen us) to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. Ephes. i. 6. For "that" ("to shew piety at home") is good, and acceptable before God. 1 Tim. v. 4. "Ye," also, ("Christians") as lively stones are "built up," (or "an honour") a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 1 Pet. ii. 5.
