CHAPTER XXXV.

1 AND God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee 2 when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. Then

Are not Abana, and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? May I not wash in them and be clean? My father (said Naaman's servants to him), if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? How much rather, then, when he saith unto thee, Wash and be clean? 2 Ki. v. 10. 12, 13. Ge. xxviii. 12, 13. Then Jacob was greatly afraid (when he heard of Esau's approach with four hundred men) and distressed, and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands: and Jacob (having senË all over the brook) was left alone, and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in 4 their hand, and all their ear-rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. And they 5 journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were

vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people. Ps. cxvi. 1, 2. 16. 18. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may go in to them, and I will praise the Lord; this gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter; I will praise thee, for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation; the stone which the builders refused, is become the head stone of the corner. Ex. xxxii. 2. 4. And Gideon said unto them" ("the men of Israel"), I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his prey (for they had golden ear-rings because they were Ishmaelites); and Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah; and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare to Gideon, and his house. Ju. viii. 24. 27. And I will visit проп "her" ("Jerusalem") the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them; and she decked herself with her ear-rings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgot me, saith the Lord. Ge. xxxiv. 30. Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed, the mighty men of Moab trembling shall take hold upon them: all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away: fear and dread shall fall upon them: by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone: till thy people pass over, O Lord, till the people (of Israel) pass over, which thou hast purchased. round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, 7 Beth-el, he and all the people that were with him. And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. 8 But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Beth-el under an oak: and the name of it was called Allon9 bachuth. And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came 10 out of Padan-aram, and blessed him. And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob,

fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you; and as soon as we heard "these things" (" which ye did to the kings of the Amorites") our hearts did melt; neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you. Ge. xxviii. 19. 22. And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el: and the Lord was with them; and the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el (now the name of the city before was Luz); and the man (whom the spies spared, having smote the city with the edge of the sword) went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day. Ju. i. 22, 23. 26.

7 Built there an altar.] See verses 1. 3. When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it: for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed; better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow, and not pay. Ec. v. 4, 5.
