were come. And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto 6 Jacob to commune with him. And the sons of Jacob came out of 7 the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done. And 8 Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife. And 9 make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and

his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment, and yet thou never gavest to me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. Lu. xv. 25. 29.

Held his peace.] Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the Lord spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace. Le. x. 3. I was dumb; I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it. Ps. xxxix. 9.

7 They were very wroth.] His sons, and his sons' sons with him (Jacob), his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed, brought he with him into Egypt. Ge. xlvi. 7. Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters. 2 Ch. xiii. 21.

Wrought folly, &c.] Now, therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. Ex. xix. 5, 6. Then they shall bring out the damsel (who may not have the tokens of virginity) to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die, because she hath wrought folly in Israel. De. xxii. 21. And it shall be that he that is taken with" the accursed thing" ("the spoils of Jericha and Ai") shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath, because he hath wrought folly in Israel. Jos. vii. 15. Now as they (the old man of Gibeah, and the Levite who had married his concubine) were making their hearts merry, behold the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him; the men (when he said unto them, Do not so wickedly)

would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them. Ju. xix. 22. 25. Holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever. Ps. xciii. 5. And() beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding. Pr. vii. 7. But ye are a chos en generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called

you out of darkness into his marvellous light. 1 Pe. ii. 9.

Which thing ought not to be done.] Thou hast done deeds unto me (said Abimelech to Abraham), that ought not to be done. Ge. xx. 9. If a soul shall sin through ignorance, concerning any thing that ought not to be done (he shall make the sin offering of ignorance). And if the whole congregation sin through ignorance, (they shall make a sin offering). And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty; then he shall bring his offering. Le. iv. 2. 13. 27, 28. Flee fornication; every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 1 Co. vi. 18. Neither let us commit fornication as some of "them" ("the Iraelites") committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 1 Co. x. 8. But fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints. Ep. v. 3. Mortify, therefore, your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry; put off all these, &c. Col. iii. 5. 8. And withal "they" ("the younger widows") learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house. 1 Ti. v. 13. Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. He. xiii. 4. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing; my brethren, these things ought not to be. Ja, iii. 10.

8 The soul of my son, &c.] See verse 3. Of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 1 Ki. xi. 2. O God, thou art my God, early will I seek thee; my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee. Ps. lxiii. 1. My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Ps. lxxxiv. 2. My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times. Ps. cxix. 20.

9 Make ye marriages, &c.] And the sons

10 take our daughters unto you. And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get 11 you possessions therein. And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye 12 shall say unto me I will give. Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give

And Lot went out and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place (Sodom), &c. Ge. xix. 14. And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah. Ge. xxvi. 34, 35. Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me? Ge. xxvii. 46. Neither shalt thou make marriages with "them" ("the Canaanites"); thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. De. vii. 3.

10 And the land shall be, &c.] "These men ("Jacob and his followers") are peaceable with "us" (" the Shechemites," said Hamor and Shechem to their people). Therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; shall not their cattle and every beast of their's be our's? Only let us consent unto them (to have our males circumcised), and they will dwell with us. Ge. xxxiv. 21. 23. Is not the whole land before thee? (said Abraham to Lot) separate thyself, I pray thee, from me. Ge. xiii. 9. And Abimelech said (to Abraham), Behold my land is before thee, dwell where it pleaseth thee. Ge. xx. 15. Bring your youngest brother (Benjamin) unto me (said Joseph to his brethren); then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men; so will I deliver you your "brother" (" Simeon," kept as a pledge), and ye shall traffic in the land. Ge. xlii. 34.

11 Let me find grace, &c.] See chap. xviii. 3. xxxiii. 15. and com.

12 Dowry.] And the servant (of Abraham) brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah; he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. Ge. xxiv. 53. "I" ("Jacob") will serve "thee" ("Laban") seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. Ge. xxix. 18. I (Jacob) served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters. Ge. xxxi. 41.

If a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, he shall surely endow her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. Ex. xxii. 16, 17. If a man find a damsel that is a virgin which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and they be found; then the man shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. De. xxii. 28. 29. The king (Saul) desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines; and David brought their foreskins (of two hundred Philistines whom he slew), and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. 1 Sa. xviii. 25. 27. And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife, Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines. 2 Sa. iii. 14. So I (Hosea) bought her (the adulteress, shewing the desolation of Israel) to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley and an half homer of barley. Ho. iii. 2.

13 Deceitfully.] Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man. Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles (for his birthright); and he did eat, and drink, and rose up, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. Ge. xxv. 27. 34. And Samson said concerning "them ("his wife and her father who had deceived him"), Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure (in sending foxes and firebrands into their standing corn, &c.) Ju. xv. 3, 4. And it came to pass that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor: and As alom invited all the king's (David's) sons. And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not. And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. 2 Sa. xiii. 23-29. But ye are forgers of lies; will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him? Job xiii. 7. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips

And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he 19 had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable

and with a double heart do they speak. Ps. xii. 2. The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips; but the just shall come out of trouble. Pr. xii. 13. A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth, and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. Pr. xviii. 20. A false witness shall perish. A wicked man hardeneth his face. Pr. xxi. 28, 29. He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; when he speaketh fair, believe him not. Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. Pr. xxvi. 24. 26. Our transgressions are with us in transgressing, and lying against the Lord; conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. Is. lix. 12, 13. They all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every one his brother with a net. Mi. vii. 2. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine: I will repay, saith the Lord. Ro. xii. 19. See that none render evil for evil unto any man. 1 The. v. 15. Say ye (said the elders), His disciples came by night, and stole "him" ("the body of Jesus") away while we slept. Mat. xxviii. 13.

14 Uncircumcised.] See chap. xvii. 11. and Make thee sharp knives (said the Lord to Joshua), and circumcise the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. Now all the people that came out (of Egypt) were circumcised; but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised. And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Jos. v. 3. 5. 9. And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised (Philistines) it may be that the Lord will work for us. 1 Sa. xiv. 6. Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that "he" ("Goliath ") should defy the armies of the living God? Thy "servant" ("David") slew the lion and the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as

one of them. 1 Sa. xvii. 26. 36. Tell it not in Gath (said David speaking of Saul's death), publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice; lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 2 Sa. i. 20. And it came to pass after forty years (from the time that David was anointed king), that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron. 2 Sa. xv. 7, And "she" (" Jezebel") wrote in the letters. saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. 1 Ki. xxi. 9. And "he" ("Herod") sent "them" ("the wise men") to Beth-lehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. And when they were departed, behold the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young “child” (“ Jesus”) and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word; for Herod will seek the young child, to destroy him. Mat. ii. 8. 13. See Mat. xxiii. And he (Abraham) received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had, yet being uncircumcised; that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised. Ro. iv. 11.

15 If ye will be as we be.] Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are. Ga. iv. 12.

19 Because he had delight.] And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed unto him but a few days for the love he had to her. Ge. xxix. 20. Love is strong as death. Ca. viii. 6. The Lord delighteth in "thee" (his "Church"), and thy land shall be married. Is. Ixii. 4.

More honourable, &c.] Thou (said Pharaoh to Joseph) shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than thou. Ge. xli. 40. And Balak sent yet again princes (to Balaam), more and more honourable than they (whom he had sent be

And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was cir25 cumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city. And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the

Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and honourable. 2 Ki. v. 1. And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren. 1 Ch. iv. 9. The Lord of hosts doth take away from Jerusalem the mighty man and the man of war; the captain of fifty, and the honourable man. And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour. The child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable. Is. iii. 1, 2, 3. 5. Therefore, my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge, and their honourable men are famished. Is. v. 13. Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth? The Lord of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth. Is. xxiii. 8, 9. But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas. Ac. xiii. 50. Therefore (because they searched the Scriptures daily) many of "them" ("the Bereans") believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. Ac. xvii. 12.

20 The gate of their city.] Thy (Abraham's) seed shall possess the gate of his enemies. Ge. xxii. 17. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham (who asked to purchase the field and cave of Machpelah), in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city. Ge. xxiii. 10. Then shalt thou bring forth that man, or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing" ("serving other gods"), unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone

them with stones till they die. De. xvii. 5. Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue, keepeth his soul from troubles. Pr. xxi. 23. They (who turn judgment to wormwood) hate him that rebuketh in the gate. Hate the evil (0 Israel), and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate; for I know your manifold transgressions, and your mighty sins: They afflict the just; they take a bribe; and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right. Am. v. 10. 15. 12. These are the things that ye shall do: Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates. Zec. viii. 16.

24 Went out of the gate.] Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of all that went in at the gate of his city. And the field and the cave (of Machpelah) which was therein, &c. &c. were made sure unto Abraham for a possession, before all that went in at the gate of his city. Ge. xxiii. 10. 17, 18.

Every male was circumcised.] See chap. xvii. 23. and com. Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil. Is. i. 10. 16. Give not that which is holy to the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Mat. vii. 6. He is not a Jew which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Ro. ii. 28, 29. Circamcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. 1 Co. vii. 19.

25 Sore.] The children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of

sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the 26 sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out. The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, be- 27 cause they had defiled their sister. They took their sheep, and 28 their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field, And all their wealth, and all their 29 little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house. Egypt, were consumed. And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people (who had been born in the wilderness, and had not been circumcised), that they abode in their places in the camp till they were whole. Jos. v. 6. 8.

Simeon and Levi.] See chap. xxix. 33, 34. And they (Israel) warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses, and they slew all the males. Moses said unto them, Kill every male among the little ones. Nu. xxxi. 7. 17. They sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away unless they cause some to fall. Pr. iv. 16. If he (a thief) be found, he shall restore seven-fold. "He" (“ a man in the day of vengeance") will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. Pr. vi. 31. 35.

All the males, &c.] See chap. xlix. 6. and com. O my soul, come not thou into "their secret" ("that of Simeon and Levi," said Jacob); unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united; for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they digged down a wall. Ge. xlix. 6. But Hezekiah rendered not again (unto the Lord) for the benefit done unto him, for his heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem. 2 Ch. xxxii. 25.

26 Edge of the sword.] I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain, and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. De. xxxii. 42. Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? Knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be, then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? 2 Sa. ii. 26. Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited. Is. xxxi. 8.

27 Spoiled the city.] The ten sons of Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand. But the other Jews that VOL. I.

Es. ix. 10. 16. The love of money is the root of all evil, which, while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Ti. vi. 10. They had defiled their sister.] See verse 2. Who made thee a prince and judge over Intendest thou to kill me as "thou" (" Moses") killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. Ex. ii. 14. But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing; and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel. When I saw (said Achan) among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold, of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them; and behold, they are hid in the earth, in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. 28 They took their sheep.] Kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man. And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Lord. Nu. xxxi. 17. 30. (Beware lest) thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth: but thou shalt remember the Lord thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. De. viii. 17, 18. The Sabæans fell upon "them" ("the oxen and the asses of Job"), and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword.

The fire of God has fallen from heaven, and hath burnt up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them. Job i. 15, 16. The triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment. Job xx. 5.
