10 And I was afraid, &c.] See chap. ii. 25. I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Exod. iii. 6. Therefore am I troubled at his presence; when I consider, I am afraid of him. Job. xxiii. 15. My flesh trembleth, for fear of thee, and I am afraid of thy judgments. Ps. cxix. 120. The sinners in Zion are afraid, fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Isa. xxxiii. 14. And of whom hast thou ("the Jewish nation") been afraid or feared, that thou hast lied, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? Have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest me not? Isa. lvii. 11. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 1 John iii. 20.

Because I was naked.] See verse 7. chap. ii. 25. And when Moses saw that the "people" were naked (the worshippers of the Golden Calf) for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies (or those that rose up against them.) Exod. xxxii.

covered, yea thy shame shall be seen. Isa. xlvii. 3. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich, and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear. Rev. iii. 17, 18. Behold I come as a thief, blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. Rev. xvi. 15.

11 Hast thou eaten, &c.] And he (the Lord) said (unto Cain) what hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. Gen. iv. 10. These things hast thou done, and I kept silence, thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself; but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Ps. 1. 21. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Rom. iii. 20.

Let no man say, when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with “evil” (or “evils"), neither tempteth he any man. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. James i. 13. 15.

13 What is this thou hast done? &c.] he (God) said, what hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground! And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand. When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. Gen. iv. 10, 11, 12. And Joseph said unto "them" (" his brethren”), what deed is this that ye have done? Gen. xliv. 15. The serpent beguiled me, &c.] See verse 4.6. But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Cor. xi. 3. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, was in the transgression. 1 Tim. ii. 14. 14 Thou art cursed, &c.] See verse 1. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed. Gen. ix. 6. If an ox gore a man or woman that they die, then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten. Exod. xxi. 28. Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, between unclean fowls and clean. Levit. xx. 23.

Dust shalt thou eat, &c.] They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him, and his enemies shall lick the dust. Ps. lxxii. 9. And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and "thy" (“ Jerusalem's”) speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be as one that hath a familiar spirit out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper ("peep" or "chirp") out of the dust. Isa. xxix. 4. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together (in the New Jerusalem). And the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. Isa. lxv. 25. They (the enemies of the church) shall lick the dust like a serpent. Mic. vii. 17.

15 Enmity, &c.] And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, and much people of Israel died. There. fore the people came to Moses, and said, we have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord (in murmuring in the wilderness). Pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. Numb. xxi. 6, 7. Though they (the people of Israel) hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them. Amos ix. 3. They shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them.

Mark xvi. 18. Behold, I give unto you (that believe) power to tread on serpents and scorpions. Luke x. 19. And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat and fastened on his hand; and he shook off the beast in the fire, and felt no harm. Thy seed and her seed, &c.] O generation of vipers (saith John to the Jews) who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Matt. iii. 7. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? Matt. xii. 34. He that committeth sin is of the devil, for the devil sinneth from the beginning. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil; whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God. 1 John iii. 8. 10. The field is the world, the good seed are the children of the kingdom, but the tares are the children of the wicked one. Matt. xiii. 38. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can "ye" ("Scribes and Pharisees") escape the damnation of hell? Matt.xxiii. 33. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. John viii. 44. Then Paul said, (to Elymas the sorcerer) O full of all subtility, and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? Acts xiii. 10.

Her seed, &c.] The Lord bath sworn in truth unto David: Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne. Ps. cxxxii. 11. Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign, behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and "shall call" (or "thou, O virgin, shalt call") his name Immanuel. Isa. vii. 14.

The

Lord hath created a new thing in the earth, a woman shall compass a man. Jer. xxxi. 22. Therefore will he give them up until the time that she, which travaileth, hath brought forth. Micah v. 3. Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and "they shall call" (or “his name shall be called") Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Matt. i. 23. And (Joseph) knew her not till she had brought forth her first-born son, and he called his name Jesus. Matt. i. 25. And, behold, thou (Mary) shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his name Jesus. The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also that holy thing, which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God. And thou, child, (John the Baptist) shalt be called the prophet of the highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways. Luke i. 31. 35. 76. But when the fulness of time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman,

made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law. Gal. iv. 4, 5.

It shall bruise thy head.] And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. Rom. xvi. 20. When he ascended up on high, he led "captivity" (or a "multitude of captives") captive, and gave gifts unto men. Eph. iv. 8. And (Christ) having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them, openly triumphing over them "in it" (or, “in himself"). Coloss. ii. 15. Forasmuch, then, as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself, likewise, took part of the same, that, through death, he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver them who, through fear of death, were all their life-time subject to bondage. Heb. ii. 14, 15. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John iii. 8. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John v. 5. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; and the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the devil, and Satan. And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Rev. xii. 7, 8, 9. 17. And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, and a great chain in his hand, and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, &c. and cast him (the old serpent) into the bottomless pit, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And the devil that deceived "them" ("the nations") was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night, for ever and ever. Rev. xx. 1. 3. 10.

Thou shalt bruise his heel, &c.] Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse-heels, so that his rider shall fall backwards. Gen. xlix. 17. "He" ("the Lord Jesus") is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, and we hid, as it were, our faces from him; he was despised and we esteemed him not; surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows, yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great; and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he hath poured out his soul unto death, and he was numbered with the transAnd he bare the sin of many, and gressors. made intercession for the transgressors. Isa.

woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire 17 shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto

Then saith Jesus unto him, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Matt. iv. 1. 10. And he (Jesus) came out and went, as he was wont, to the Mount of Olives. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was, as it were, great drops of blood, falling down to the ground. When I was daily with you in the temple, (said the Lord) ye stretched forth no hands against me, but this is your hour and the power of darkness. Luke xxii. 39. 44. 53. Now is the judgment of this world (saith Christ), now shall the prince of this world be cast out; and I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me; this he said, signifying what death he should die. John xii. 31, 32, 33. The prince of this world cometh (saith the Lord Jesus), and hath nothing in me, but that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. John xiv. 30, 31. For in that he himself hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. Heb. ii. 18. (Christ) who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears, unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard "in that he feared" (or "for his piety"). Though he were a son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered. Heb. v. 7. Behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye (the angels or ministers of the churches of Ephesus) shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Rev. ii. 10.

And the great dragon was cast out, and when he saw that he was cast into the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. Rev. xii. 9. 13. And it was given unto "him" (" the dragon") to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and power was given him over all kindreds and tongues and nations. Rev. xiii. 7. And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues, for in them is filled up the wrath of God; and the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues. Rev. xv. 1. 6. And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog to gather them together to battle. Rev. xx. 7, 8. 16 In sorrow, &c.] And Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. Gen. xxxv. 16. And his (Eli's) daughter in law, Phinehas'

wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken (by the Philistines), and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed, for her pains came upon her. 1 Sam. iv. 19, 20. Fear took hold upon them (the confederate kings of idolatrous nations) there, and pain as of a woman in travail. Ps. xlviii. 6. And "they" (" of Babylon") shall be afraid; pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth. Isa. xiii. 8. "Therefore" (" in consequence of a grievous vision of the fall of Babylon") are my (Isaiah's) loins filled with pain; pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth. Isa. xxi. 3. Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain and crieth out in her pangs, so have we been in thy sight, O Lord; we have been with child, we have been in pain. Isa. xxvi. 17, 18. He (Christ) shall see of the travail of his soul (in the extension of his church), and shall be satisfied. Isa. liii. 11. For "I" ("Jeremiah") have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child. Jer. iv. 31. Anguish hath taken hold of " us ("the Jews"), and pain (for impending calamities) as of a woman in travail. Jer. vi. 24. Shall not sorrows take thee (when God shall punish Judah) as a woman in travail? Jer. xiii. 21. O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail! Jer. xxii. 23. Anguish and sorrows have taken "her" (“ Damascus") as a woman in travail. Jer. xlix. 24. Now, why dost thou cry aloud? is there nothing in thee? Is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken thee, as a woman in travail. Micah iv. 9. Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail. Micah iv. 10. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come, but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. John xvi. 21. For when they shall say peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child. 1 Thess. v. 3. Notwithstanding she (the woman) shall be saved in child-bearing, if they continue in faith and charity, and holiness with sobriety. 1 Tim. ii. 15.

Thy desire, &c.] If thou doest well (said the Lord to Cain) shalt thou not be accepted? And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door; and unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. Rule over thee, &c.]

But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it, then he shall make her vow, which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect. Numb. xxx. 6, 7, 8. Every vow and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void. Numb. xxx. 13. And when the king's decree, which he shall make, shall be published throughout all his empire (for it is great), all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small. Esther i. 20. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence, and likewise also the wife unto the husband. 1 Cor. vii. 3. The head of the woman is the man. 1 Cor xi. 3. Let your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not permitted unto them to speak, but they are commanded to be under obedience, and if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands. 1 Cor. xiv. 34, 35. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands. As the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Eph. v. 22. 24. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Col. iii. 18. Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 1 Tim. ii. 11, 12. (The duty of) young women likewise (is) to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Tit. ii. 5. Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may, without the word, be won by the conversation of the wives. Even so as Sara obeyed Abraham. 1 Pet. iii. 1. 6.

17 Because thou hast, &c.] For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. 1 Sam. xv. 23. And he (the king who made a marriage feast for his son) saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having a wedding garment? And he (the guest) was speechless. Matt. xxii.

12. Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed, thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Then

shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. Matt. XXV. 26, 27. 45. Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow. Luke xix. 22. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them that are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God" (or "subject to the judgment of God"). And hast eaten, &c.] See verse 6. 11. and chap. ii. 16, 17. Can any hide himself in secret places, that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord. Jer. xxiii. 24.

Cursed is the ground, &c.] And he (Lamech) called his name Noah, saying, this same shall comfort us, concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed. Gen. v. 29. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows, for so he giveth his beloved sleep. Ps. cxxvii. 2. Vanity of vanities; all is vanity. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? Eccles. i. 1, 2. This sore travail hath God given to the sons of man "to be exercised therewith" (or "to afflict them"). I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold all is vanity and vexation of spirit. Eccles. i. 13, 14. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do, and behold all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. Eccles. ii. 11. Therefore I hated life, because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me, for all is vanity and vexation of spirit. Eccles. ii. 17. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof, because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinances, broken the everlasting covenant; therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate, therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned and few men left. Isa. xxiv. 5, 6. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope; for we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. Rom. viii. 20. 22.
