It was not toward him.] See chap. xxx. 27. As before.] And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant; but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. Ex. iv. 10. And this is the case of the slayer who shall flee thither (to the city of refuge), that he may live who killeth his neighbour ignorantly whom he hated not in the time past. De. xix. 4. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as in times past. 1 Sa. xix. 7.

3 Return, &c.] See chap. xxviii. 15. and com. And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, so that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God. Ge. xxviii. 20, 21, &c. Return unto thy country (said God to Jacob) and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee. Ge. xxxii. 9. Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there. Ge. xxxv. 1. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Fear not to go down into Egypt, for I will there make of thee a great nation. xlvi. 2, 3. God will surely visit you (said Joseph to his brethren), and bring you out of this land, unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Ge. 1. 24. God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble. Ps. xl. i. And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Ps. 1. 15. Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. Ps. xc. 15.

Ge.

Land of thy fathers.] Get thee out of this land (said God to Jacob), and return unto the And he carried away land of thy kindred. all his cattle, and all his goods, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. Ge. xxxi. 13. 18; xiii. 15; xxvi. 3. 5; xxviii. 4. 13. 15; xxx. 25. with their com.

With thee.] Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host, spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest. Ge. xxi. 22. I am with thee (said the Lord to Abraham). Ge. xxvi. 24. See Ge. xxviii. 15. I will deal well with "thee" (said the Lord to "Jacob"). Ge. xxxii. 9. Fear thou not, for I am with thee (saith God to his Church): be not dismayed, for I am thy God. Is. xli. 10. I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. He. xiii. 5..

5 The God of my father.] See verse 3. 13. 42. 53. And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee. Ge. xxxii. 9. And "he" ("Jacob") blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, and the Angel which redeemed me, from all evil, bless "the lads," (" Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh"). Ge. xlviii. 15, 16. And now "we" ("Joseph's brethren") pray thee forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy fathers. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. Ge. 1. 17.

6 With all my power.] This twenty years have I been with "thee" ("Laban"); thy ewes and thy she-goats have not cast their young; and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten. Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee See chap. yesternight. Ge. xxxi. 38. 42. xxx. 29. and com. 7 Ten times.] wages ten times. have broken the

Thou hast changed my Ge. xxxi. 41. And when I staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven. Le. xxvi. 26. Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles (said the Lord) which I did in Egypt, and in the wilderness, have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice. Nu. xiv. 22. And it came to pass, when the Jews which dwelt by "them" (our "adversaries") came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you. Ne. iv. 12. These ten times have ye reproached me. Job xix. 3. And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man. Is. iv. 1. In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out

If he said thus,

The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare 9 all the cattle ringstraked. Thus God hath taken away the cattle 10 of your father, and given them to me. And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle 11 were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled. And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.

of all languages, of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you. Ze. viii. 23.

God suffered him not.] It is in the power of my hand (said Laban) to do you hurt but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. Ge. xxxi. 29. See chap. xx. 6. Hast thou not made an hedge about "him" (" Job"), and about his house (said Satan to God), and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. Job i. 10. Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out. He is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice he will not afflict. Job xxxvii. 23. He suffered no man to do them "Israel" wrong; yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. Ps. cv. 14, 15. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord. Is. liv. 17.

And God said unto him (Abimelech) in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her (Sarah). Ge. xx. 6. And he (Jacob) dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. Ge. xxviii. 12. And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. Nu. xii. 6. If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet. De xiii. 1, 2, 3. In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night. 1 Ki. iii. 5.

11 Angel of God.] See verses 5. 13. Ge. xvi. 7. 13; xviii. 1. 17. And he (Jacob) blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the "lads" ("Ephraim and Manasseh"). Gt. xlviii. 15, 16.

Here am I.] See chap. xxii. 1. And when 9 God hath taken away, &c.] And he the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God (Jacob) heard the words of Laban's sons, say- called unto him out of the midst of the bush, ing, Jacob hath taken away all that was our and said, Moses, Moses; and he said, Here an father's for all the riches which God hath I. On that day did of God was, and Samuel was laid down to the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman, sleep; the Lord called Samuel: and he anthe Jews' enemy, unto Esther the queen. And swered, Here am I. And the Lord called yet the king took off his ring which he had taken again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai; and Eli (the priest), and said, Here am I; and he Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman. answered and said, I called not (my son); lie Es. viii. 1. For every beast of the forest is down again. And the Lord called Samuel mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. again the third time. And he arose and went Ps. 1. 10. A good man leaveth an inheritance to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst to his children's children; and the wealth of call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had the sinner is laid up for the just. Pr. xiii. called the child. Then Eli called Samuel, and 22. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here with mine own? Is thine eye evil because I am I. 1 Sam. iii. 3, 4. 6. 8. 16. Then shalt am good? Mat. xx. 15. thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. lviii. 9.

10 A dream, &c.] And God came to Laban, the Syrian, in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak

And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which 12 leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee. I am the God of Beth-el, 13 where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. And Rachel and Leah answered and 14 said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house? Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath 15 sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money. For all the riches 16 which God hath taken from our father, that is our's, and our

12 Lift up now thine eyes.] And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hasel and chesnut tree, and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods. And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks: and the flocks conceived before the rods: and Jacob did separate the lambs; and he put his own flocks by themselves. And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses. Ge. xxx. 37, 38. 40. 43.

I have seen all that Laban doeth, &c.] Except the God of my father had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. Ge. xxxi. 42. I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt; now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me, and I have seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. Ex. i. 7. 9. Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. Le. xix. 13. At his day thou shalt give him (the hired servant) his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto thee. De. xxiv. 15. For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord. Ps. xii. 5. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. Ps. cxxxix. 3. If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter, for he that is higher than the highest regardeth, and there be higher than they. Ec. v. 8. I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. Ac. vii. 34. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them" ("your servants"), forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. Ep. vi. 9.

13 The God of Beth-el.] See chap. xxviii. 12. 22. And he (Jacob) built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother (Esau). Ge. xxxv. 7. Return unto the land of thy kindred, &c.] VOL. I.

See verse 3. Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal with thee (said God to Jacob). Ge. xxxii. 9.

14 Rachel and Leah.] The Lord make the "woman" ("Ruth") that is come into thine house (said the people and elders to Boaz) like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel. Ru. iv. 11.

Yet any portion, &c.] Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Ge. ii. 24. And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah, Zilpah his maid for an handmaid; and Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid. Ge. xxix. 24. 29.

15 Sold us.] I served thee (said Jacob to Laban) fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times. Ge. xxxi. 41. And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? Tell me what shall thy wages be? And Jacob served seven years for Rachel. Ge. xxix. 15. 20. Fulfil her (Leah's) week (said Laban), and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years. And he (Jacob) went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years. Ge. xxix. 27. 30. Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go; for thou knowest my service which I have done thee. Ge. xxx. 26. And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. And if he (to whom she may be betrothed) do not "these three" unto her ("food, raiment, and her duty of marriage"), then shall she go out free without money. Ex. xxi. 7. 11. Will ye even sell your brethren (said Nehemiah to the nobles and the rulers)? or shall they be sold unto us? v. 8.

16 God hath taken from our father.] See verse i. 9, and com. And he (Laban) removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his

children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do. 17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels; 18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. And Laban went to shear his sheep and Rachel had stolen the images 20 that were her father's. And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban 21 the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and 22 set his face toward the mount Gilead. And it was told Laban on

And the man (Jacob) increased exceedingly, &c. Ge. xxx. 35. 43.

Whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.] Hearken, O daughter, and consider and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house. Ps. xlv. 10.

17 Upon camels.] And the servant (of Abraham) took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed (to seek a wife for Isaac). And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man (Abraham's servant). Ge. xxiv. 10. 61. And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man " of them" ("the Amalekites"), save four hundred young men which rode upon camels, and fled. 1 Sa. xxx. 17.

18 For to go to Isaac, &c.] See chap. xxvii. 1, 2. 41. and com. So that I come again to my father's house in peace (said Jacob), then shall the Lord be my God. Ge. xxviii. 21. And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arba (which is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. Ge. XXXV. 27. 29.

19 Images.] And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house; yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods? And Jacob answered, With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee: for Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them. Ge. xxxi. 30. 32. Then Jacob said unto his houshold, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you. Ge. xxxv. 2. And Joshua said unto all the people, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods. Jos. xxiv. 2. He (Micah the Ephraimite) restored the money (which he had stolen) unto his mother: and his mother took two hundred shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image, and a molten image and they were in the house of Micah. Ju. xvii. 4. And the man Micah had an house of gods, and made an ephod, and teraphim, &c.

Ju. xvii. 5. Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do. Ju. xviii. 14. And he (Micah) said, Ye have taken away my gods which I have made, and the "priest" ("the young Levite"), and ye are gone away: and what have I more? And "they" (" the children of Dan") set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh. Ju. xviii. 24. 31. And Michal (David's wife) took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goat's hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth (to deceive those who sought David's life). 1 Sa. xix. 13. The king of Babylon stood in the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images. Ez. xxi. 21. The children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim. Ho. iii. 4.

20 Unawares to Laban.] Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me (said Laban)? Ge. xxxi. 27.

21 Passed over the river.] And the fourth river (that went out of Eden) is Euphrates. Ge. ii. 14. Unto thy seed (said God to Abram) have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates. Ge. xv. 18. Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time; and I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan. Jos. xxiv. 2, 3.

Set his face, &c.] And "he" (“Jacob”) sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. Ge. xlvi. 28. And when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness. Nu. xxiv. 1. Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath, and took it; and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem. 2 Ki. xii. 17. And "they" ("of

Gilead.] And they (Laban and his brethren) overtook him (Jacob) in the mount Gilead. Ge. xxxi. 23. And when they (the Reubenites and Gadites) saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle (they came and spake unto Moses). Nu. xxxii. 1. And this land which we possessed at this time from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites. De. iii. 12. Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes (said the Lord to Joshua), and the half tribe of Manasseh, with whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond Jordan eastward; from Aroer that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon. Jos. xiii. 7, 8, 9. And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the childrea of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead (Jephthah overcame them). Ju. x. 18. And Elisha the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, There shall not be dew or rain these three years, but according to my word. 1 Ki. 17. 1.

22 The third day.] And he set three days' journey betwixt "himself" ("Laban") and Jacob.

Ge. xxx. 36. And it was told the king of Egypt (Pharaoh), that the people (of Israel) fled, &c. Ex. xiv. 5, &c. He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise; he taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. Job v. 12, 13.

23 His brethren with him.] See chap. xiii. 8. I being in the way (said Abraham's servant), the Lord led me to the house of my master's brethren. Ge. xxiv. 27. It came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his "brethren" (the "Israelites"), and looked on their burdens; and when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? Ex. ii. 11. 13.

24 The Syrian.] See chap. xxviii. 5. And thou (offering the first fruits) shalt speak, and say before the Lord thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous. De. xxvi. 5. Jacob fled into the country of Syria. Ho. xii. 12.

Dream.] See verse 10. See chap. xx. 3. and com. The God of your father spake unto me yesternight (said Laban to Jacob), saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob good or bad. Ge. xxxi. 29. And "they" ("the butler and baker of Pharaoh") dreamed a dream each of them, each man his dream in one night. Ge. xl. 5. If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. Nu. xii. 6. And God came unto Balaam at night, and said to him, If the men (from Balak) come to call thee, rise up, and go with them: but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do. And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left; and when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam. Nu. xxii. 20. 26. In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. 1 Ki. iii. 5. God speaketh in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed: then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man: if there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, his flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth. Job xxxiii. 15, 16, 17. 23. 25. The angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. Mat. i. 20. And (the wise men) being warned of God in a dream, that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. Mat. ii. 12. When “he” (“ Pilate") was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. Mat. xxvii. 19.

Take heed, &c.] See verse 42. chap. xxiv. 50. and com. If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the Lord to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but
