And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam 20 called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found 21 an help meet for him. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, 22 and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the

Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought 23 her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, be24 cause she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife and

They shall be one flesh.] Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously, yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth "putting away" (or "to put away"). Mal. ii. 14. 16. Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery. Matt. xix. 3. 9. From the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they twain shall be one flesh, so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. And the ser5 pent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God

xxvii. 1. Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Matt. x. 16. Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Cor. xi. 14. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Rev. xii. 9. And he (the angel) laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, &c. and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled, and after that he must be loosed a little season. Rev. xx. 3. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do (said Jesus to the Pharisees, &c.): he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him; when he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it. John viii. 44.

He said unto the woman, &c.] And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? Likewise ye husbands, dwell with them (your wives) according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife as unto the weaker vessel. 1 Pet. iii. 7.

Yea, hath God said, &c.] And when the tempter came to him (Christ) he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. All these things (the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them) (saith Satan) will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. (Matt. iv. 3. 6. 9.

2 Serpent, &c.] poison of a serpent.

Their poison is like the They (the wicked) are

like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear. Ps. lviii. 4.

3 But of the fruit, &c.] See chap. ii. 16, 17. Touch it, &c.] Therefore suffered I thee (said God in a dream to Abimelech) not to touch her (Sarah). Gen. xx. 6. And "thou" ("Moses") shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount (Sinai) or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mountain shall be surely put to death. There shall not an hand touch it. Exod. xix. 12, 13. Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. 1 Chron. xvi. 22. But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that "he" (Job”) hath, and he will curse "thee" (" the Lord") to thy face, (saith Satan). Job i. 11. Put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. Job ii. 5. The hand of God hath touched me. Job xix. 21. 4 Said unto, &c.] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it. John viii. 44.

Ye shall not surely die, &c.] The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Gen. iii. 13. Keep therefore the words of this covenant and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do. Deut. xxix. 9. Then Moab rebelled against Israel, after the death of Ahab. (And Ahaziah was sick and sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub, whether he should recover.) Now therefore thus saith the Lord. Thou (Ahaziah) shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. 2 Kings i. 1. 4. 6. 16. And Elisha said unto him (Hazael), Go, say unto him (Benhadad) thou mayest certainly recover: how beit the Lord hath shewed me, that he shall surely die. 2 Kings viii. 10. He (the wicked man) hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten. He hideth his face, He will never see it. Ps. x. 11. means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtility, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Cor. xi. 3. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. 1 Tim. ii. 14.

5 God doth know, &c.] Thou shalt not take the name of thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless, that taketh his name in vain. Exod. xx. 7. Then the king of Israel (Ahab) gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, shall I go against Ramoth-Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, go up, for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king. 1 Kings xxii. 6. Then said I (Jeremiah) Ah Lord God, behold the prophets say unto them, ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine, but I will give you "assured peace" ("peace of truth") in this place. Then the Lord said unto me, the prophets prophesy lies in my name; I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them; they prophesy unto you a false vision, and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. Jer. xiv. 13, 14. (Then said Hananiah the son of Azur, the lying prophet) Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon; within two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of the Lord's house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried them to Babylon. Jer. xxviii. 2, 3. Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy; they have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, the Lord saith, And the Lord hath not sent them. Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad, and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way by promising him life. Ezek. xiii. 2. 6. 22. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. Your eyes, &c.] See verse 7. And he (Adam) said, I heard thy (God's) voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. Gen. iii. 10. I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go. Exod. v. 2. Son of man, say unto the Prince of Tyrus, Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in "the midst" ("the heart") of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart, as the heart of God. Dan. vi. 7. And the people gave a shout, saying, it is the voice of a God, and not of a man, and immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, (Herod) because he gave not God the glory. That day (of Christ) shall not come, except that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped, so that he, as God, sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 2 Thess. ii. 4. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast, and they worshipped the beast saying, who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him? And (the beast with two horns like a lamb) deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do. Rev. xiii. 4. 14.
