at hand. Ge. xxvii. 41. And "they" ("Joseph and the elders" of the land of Egypt, &c.) came to the thrashing-floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation; and he made a mourning for his "father" ("Jacob") seven days. Ge. 1. 10. And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel. Nu. xx. 29. And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. De. xxxiv. 8. Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. 1 Sa. xxviii. 3. And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel, because they were fallen by the sword. And David lamented with this lamentation (the beauty of Israel is slain, &c.) over Saul, and over Jonathan his son. 2 Sa. i. 12. 17. And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah, and all the singing-men and singing-women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day; and behold, they are written in the lamentations. 2 Chr. xxxv. 25. Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him; but weep sore for him that goeth away, for he shall return no more, nor see his native country. Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah, my brother! or Ah, sister! They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah, lord! or Ah, his glory! Je. xxii. 10. 18. "Son of man" (" Ezekiel"), behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke; yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down. So I spake unto the people in the morning, and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded. Ez. xxiv. 16. 18. The Jews then which were with her (Mary, the sister of Lazarus) in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. Where have ye laid him? (said Jesus.) They say unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. Jn. xi. 31. 34, 35. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. Acts viii. 2.

3 Stood up from before his dead.] Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground, &c. Isa. xlvii. 1. Heth.] See ver. 5. 7. And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn and Heth. Ge. x. 15. and com. (In) the field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth, there was Abraham

buried, and Sarah his wife. Ge. xxv. 10. And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me? Ge. xxvii. 46. Bury me (said Jacob to his sons) in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite, for a possession of a burying-place. Ge. xlix. 30.

Then answered David and said to Abimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Jeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee. 1 Sa. xxvi. 6. Uriah the Hittite (was one of David's worthies), thirty and seven in all. 2 Sa. xxiii. 39.

4 A stranger, &c.] And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger. Ge. xvii. 8. And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage. Ge. xlvii. 9. The land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners (saith the Lord) with me. Le. xxv. 23. For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers. Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. 1 Ch. xxix. 15. For "I” (“ David”) am a stranger with thee and a sojourner, as all my fathers were. xxxix. 12. When they were but few men in number, yea very few, and strangers in it (the land), when they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people, he suffered no man to do them wrong, &c. Ps. cv. 12, 13. I am a stranger in the earth; hide not thy commandments from me. Ps. cxix. 19. By faith "he" ("Abraham") sojourned in the land of promise as in a strange country. He. xi. 9. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. But now they desire a better country, that is an heavenly. He. xi. 13. 16. Dearly beloved, I beseech you, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul. 1 Pe. ii. 11.

Burying-place, &c.] In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground, for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Ge. iii. 19. Bury me (said Jacob) in the cave

And the children of Heth answered Abraham, 6 saying unto him, Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest 7 bury thy dead. And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to 8 the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to

Bury my dead.] And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre. Ge. xxiii. 19. 6 My lord.] After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? Ge. xviii. 12. And she (Rebekah) said (to Abraham's servant), Drink, my lord; and she hasted to let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. And he said, I am Abraham's servant: and the Lord hath blessed my "master" ("Abraham") greatly, and he is become great. Ge. xxiv. 18. 34, 35. And "she" ("Rachel") said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee. Ge. xxxi. 35. Thus shall ye speak to my lord Esau: Thy servant Jacob saith thus: I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and men-servants, and women-servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. It is a present sent unto my lord Esau, &c. Ge. xxxii. 4, 5. 18. And they said unto "him" ("Joseph"), Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants" ("Joseph's brethren") come. Ge. xlii. 10. Is not this "it" ("the cup") in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? And they (Joseph's brethren) said, (to Joseph's steward), How should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold? Ge. xliv. 5. 8. And Aaron said (unto Moses), let

not the anger of my lord wax hot; thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief. Ex. xxxii. 22. Then "she” (“ Ruth") said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for thou (Boaz) hast comforted me, &c. R. ii. 13.

A mighty prince.] And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. Ge. xiii. 2. and com.

And when Abram heard that his brother (Lot) was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen. Ge. xiv. 14. And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly, and he is become great. Ge. xxiv. 35. See chap. xxi. 22. Thus saith the Lord, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia, and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee" ("Israel"). They shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee, &c. Is. xlv. 14. Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 1 Jn. iii. 1, 2.

7 Bowed himself.] See chap. xviii. 2. and And Lot seeing them (the two angels), rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. Ge. xix. l. A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly. Pr. xviii. 24. Recompense to no man evil for evil; provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Rom. xii. 17, 18. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. He. xii. 14. Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another: love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous. 1 Pe. iii. 8.

8 Intreat for me.] And he said (to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon), Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay), that he give me Abishag, the Shunammite, to wife (said Adonijah). 1 Ki. ii. 17. And when "he" (" a certain centurion") heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly,

Ephron the son of Zohar, That he may give me the cave of Maca- 9 pelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me, for a possession of a burying-place amongst you. And Ephron dwelt among the chil- 10 dren of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I 11 thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead. And 12

saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this. Lu. vii. 3, 4. For such an High Priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. He. vii. 26. If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. Jn. ii. 1, 2.

9 As much money, &c.] Provide things honest in the sight of all men. Ro. xii. 17. Owe no man any thing. Ro. xiii. 8.

10 All that went in, &c.] See verse 18. And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city. And unto Hamor and unto Shechem hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city. Ge. xxxiv. 20. 24. Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there; and behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by, unto whom he said, Ho! such a one, turn aside, sit down here: and he turned aside, and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here; and they sat down. And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's. And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it; but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know; for there is none to redeem it besides thee, and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. Ru. iv. 1-4. When I went out to the gate, through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street, the young men saw me, and hid themselves, and the aged arose and stood up. Job xxix. 7. In that day (when Ephraim shall be trodden down) shall the Lord of hosts be for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate. Is. xxviii. 6.

His city.] And he (Abraham's servant) arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. Ge. xxiv. 10. And he (Jesus) entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. Mat. ix. 1. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own

city: and Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David), to be taxed with Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child. Lu. ii. 3, 4.

11 My lord, hear me, &c.] See verse 6, and com. And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him; and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the "king" ("David") on his face upon the ground. And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? and David said, to buy the thrashing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord. And the king said unto Araunah, I will surely buy it of thee at a price, neither will I offer burntofferings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. 2 Sa. xxiv. 20, 21. 24. Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this thrashing-floor, that I may build an altar therein unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people (sent for his numbering Israel). And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee; and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt-offerings, and the thrashing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat-offering: I give it all. And king David said to Ornan, Nay, but I will verily buy it for the full price; for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt-offerings without cost. 1 Ch. xxi. 22, 23, 24. The liberal deviseth liberal things, and by liberal things shall he stand. xxxii. 8. In the presence of the sons of my people.] See verse 18. Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death, by the mouth of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. Nu. xxxv. 30. At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death. De. xvii. 6. One witness shall not rise up against a man, for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established. De. xix. 15. See Ru. iv. 1-4. preced. com. And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day that I have bought all

Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land. 13 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will bury my 14 dead there. And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him, 15 My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy 16 dead. And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current 17 money with the merchant. And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that

that was Elimelech's, &c. And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. Ru. iv. 9. 11. Behold Hanameel, the son of Shallum, thine (Jeremiah's) uncle, shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field, that is in Anathoth, for the right of redemption is thine to buy it. And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch, the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel, mine uncle's son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison. Je. xxxii. 7. 12. But his citizens hated him (the nobleman who left money with his servants, in the parable), and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. Lu. xix. 14.

12 Bowed down.] See verse 7. and chap. xviii. 2. with com. also chap. xix. 1.

13 I will give thee money.] See chap. xiv. 22, 23. and com. And the king said unto Araunah, Nay, but I will surely buy "it" ("his thrashing-floor") of thee at a price. 2 Sa. xxiv. 24. Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Ac. xx. 35. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another.

xiii. 8. Let your moderation be known unto all men. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things. Phi. iv. 5. 8. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Col. iv. 5. Let your conversation be without covetousness. He. xiii. 5.

15 Shekels.] The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the Lord, to make an atonement for your souls. Ex. xxx. 15. And the shekel shall be twenty gerahs; twenty shekels, five and twenty shekels, fifteen shekels, shall be your maneh.

Ez. xlv. 12.

16 Weighed to Ephron, &c.] And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we (Joseph's brethren) opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. Ge. xliii. 21. And (Ezra) weighed unto "them" ("the chief of the priests") the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God. So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem, unto the house of our God. Ezra viii. 25. 30. "It" ("wisdom") cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. Job xxviii. 15. And I bought the field of Hanameel, my uncle's son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. Je. xxxii. 9. So they weighed for "my" ("the Messiah's") price thirty pieces of silver. Ze. xi. 12. Whatsover ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets. Mat. vii. 12. Owe no man any thing. Ro. xiii. 8. Whatsoever things are honest, &c. think on these things. Phi. iv. 8. (This is the will of God) that no man go beyond, and defraud his brother in any matter. 1 Th. iv. 6.

Four hundred shekels.] See verse 15. This they shall give every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary (a shekel is twenty gerahs); an half shekel shall be the offering unto the Lord. Ex. xxx. 13. See verse 15. and com.

17 The field of Ephron.] And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham, &c. Ge. xxiii. 20. And his sons, Isaac and Ishmael, buried "him" ("Abraham") in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar, the Hittite, which is before Mamre. Ge. xxv. 9. (Bury me) in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah (said Jacob to his sons), which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron, the Hittite, for a possession of a burying-place.

were in all the borders round about, were made sure Unto Abraham 18 for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. And after this, Abraham 19 buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And the field, 20 and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the sons of Heth.

The purchase of the field, and of the cave that is therein, was from the children of Heth. Ge. xlix. 30. 32. His (Jacob's) sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, for a possession of a burying-place, of Ephron, the Hittite, before Mamre. Ge. 1. 13. And (Jacob and our fathers) were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham had bought for a sum of money, of the sons of Emmor, the father of Sychem. Ac. vii. 16.

Made sure.] See verse 20. Now this was the manner in former time in Israel, concerning redeeming, and concerning changing, for to confirm all things. A man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. Moreover (said Boaz) Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off, from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place ye are witnesses this day. Ru. iv. 7. 10. A good man sheweth favour and lendeth. Ps. cxii. 5. See Je. xxxii. 6. 8. 12. at verse 11. and com. Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Mat. x. 16. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise. Ep. v. 15. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without. Col. iv. 5.

And he charged "them" ("his sons"), I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers, in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite: there they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah (said Jacob). Ge. xlix. 29. 31. His sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried "him" ("Jacob") in the cave of the field of Machpelah. And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. Ge. 1. 13. 25, For I know that thou (God) wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. Job xxx. 23. For a possession.] See com. on buried Sarah, verse 19. There they buried Abraham, &c. The purchase of the field, and of the cave that is therein, was from the children of Heth. Ge. xlix. 32. My "father" ("Jacob") made me swear, saying, Lo, I die : in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me: now therefore let "me" ("Joseph") go up, I pray "thee"? ("Pharaoh"), and bury my father, and I will come again. Ge. 1. 5. And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza. 2 Ki. xxi. 18.
