What is the Temperance Movement worth? None can say who have not gauged the loss incurred and havoc wrought by the system it would abolish. What is it worth! We may in a measure calculate and forecast; but nothing short of the complete triumph of the movement can supply the all-sufficient and all-satisfying answer.

REV. DAWSON BURNS, M.A.

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THE CAUSE OF GOD.

GOD works by means, and requires us to contribute of our substance to His service. Illustrate by Exod. xxxvi, 5, “ And they spake unto Moses, saying, the people bring much more than enough for the service of the work."

I.

GOD'S CAUSE NEEDS OUR HELP.-Consider how much has to be done.-1, the Gospel has to be preached at home and abroad; 2, churches, chapels, and schools have to be built; 3, suffering has to be relieved and the poor and helpless have to be maintained; 4, vice has to be repressed and virtue promoted.

II. GOD'S CAUSE OFTEN HINDERED FOR WANT OF FUNDS.-For lack of money ministers cannot be employed at home nor missionaries sent abroad. Illustrate by referring to debts on churches and chapels, etc. The cry is everywhere, "want of means."

III.-WHY ARE FUNDS LACKING FOR GOD'S CAUSE ?-Because men spend so much in selfish indulgence.

APPLICATION.-The Israelites gave (1) willingly, (2) liberally, and therefore (3) abundantly.

WORK AMONG THE YOUNG.

A SERMON FOR LITTLE FOLKS.

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.-John xiii, 17. I. "These things," that is, your duties. You have duties, whereever you are: 1. At home, obedience and respect to parents, and kindness to brothers, sisters, and servants. 2. At school, respect to teacher, faithfulness in study, and fairness in play. 3. At church, be quiet, listen, worship, and give your hearts to the Saviour. 4. On the street, good manners, modesty, kindness, minding your own business.

II. How should you do your duty? 1. Not for pay. That is a low motive. Some always ask, "What will you give me?" 2. But from love. So the Saviour did when a boy at Nazareth. So the angels do God's will-which is only another name for duty. This will make you do it cheerfully. 3. Better every day. By trying to do your duties,

you become more skilful. So you will improve in reading, writing, and music. Peter says, "Grow in grace." III.-Doing duty makes you happy. Sin cannot make you happy.

Sin did not make Eve happy, nor
home does not make you happy;
no kind of sin can make you happy.
your duty. That is God's reward.
Think of this every day for just one week, and see how true it is. Try,
then, to know your duty. Be faithful in duty, in doing it for love to
God and man, then you will be happy in heaven.

Cain, nor Judas. Disobedience at
idleness, unkindness, bad manners,
But happiness comes from doing
This is the promise in the text.

BLACK-BOARD LESSON ON MINDING ONE'S STOPS.

START by questioning the children with a view to find out whether they understand the meaning and use of "stops" in reading. It will be sufficient if all of them see that the comma, the semi-colon, and the colon mark pauses in a sentence; while the period (or full-stop) marks its end. Next draw on the black-board the first stop

And use the sign as the foundation of some remarks on the duty of pausing to think whenever anything has to be done. The lesson of the comma may be thus expressed :

NEVER ACT WITHOUT THOUGHT.

Then proceed to the next stop and draw on the board a large semicolon, thus

;

This being a longer pause than the comma, its lesson (to be enlarged upon at the discretion of the teacher), may be expressed thus ::AT THE FIRST SIGHT OF DANger, Beware!

Follow this up by drawing a large colon

And explain that this stop usually cuts off the connection between two parts of a sentence. Use it to illustrate this lesson :

IF COMPANIONS TEMPT YOU TO DO WRONG, YOU MUST LEAVE THEM. In the last place draw very distinctly and clearly a period

Every bad habit must be broken off altogether. The only way to be safe is to come to a full-stop. In relation to strong drink the rule of life must be

BUY NOT! SELL NOT! DRINK NOT! GIVE NOT!

ANECDOTES.

To make our reliance on Providence both pious and rational, we should prepare all things with the same care and diligence as if there was no such thing as Providence to depend upon; and when we have done all this, then we should as wholly and humbly rely upon it as if we had made no preparation at all, for if we trust God we may be sure of all that omnipotence may do for us. South.

THUS it is that God wills man to be great-that God wills man to be happy. Effort is the condition-effort the means, effort the vehicle and the hope of all that he is ever to be. Effort over nature-effort over the world-effort, especially, over himself.-Rev. G. Armstrong.

JOSEPH A TYPE OF CHRIST.-The Fathers always regarded Joseph as a type of Christ. Pascal thus sums up the points of resemblancein his father's love for him, his being sent to see after the peace of the brethren, their conspiring against him, his being sold for twenty pieces of silver, his rising from his humiliation to be the lord and saviour of those who had wronged him, and with them also the saviour . of the world.

EMBLEMS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.-Water-cleansing, fertilising, refreshing, abundant, freely given. Fire-purifying, illuminating, searching. Wind-independent, powerful, sensible in its effects, reviving. Oil-healing, comforting, illuminating, consecrating. Rain and dewfertilising, refreshing, abundant, imperceptible, penetrating. A dovegentle, meek, innocent, forgiving. A voice-speaking, guiding, warning, teaching. A seal-impressing, securing, authenticating.
