FOR ASMUCH as many have taken in hand to fet forth in order a declaration of thofe things which are most furely believed among us, 18 And Zacharias faid unto the asgel, Whereby fhall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. : 19 And the angel anfwering faid unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the prefence of God and am sent to speak unto thee, and to fhew thee thefe glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, 2 Even as they delivered them unto and not able to fpeak, until the day that us, which from the beginning were eye-thefe things fhall be performed, because witneffes, and minifters of the word; thou believeft not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their feafon. 3 It feemed good to me alfo, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very firft, to write unto thee in order. most excellent Theophilus, That thou mighteft know the certainty of thofe things, wherein thou haft been inftructed. 5 THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the courfe of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elifabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 And they had no child, because that Elifabeth was barren, and they both were now well ftricken in years. 8 And it came to pafs, that while he executed the priest's office before God, in the order of his courte, 9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incenfe when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incenfe. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right, fide of the altar of incenfe. 12 And when Zacharias faw bim, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 18 But the angel faid unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elifabeth hall bear thee a fon, and thou fhalt call his name John. 21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried fo long in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not fpeak unto them and they perceiv ed that he had feen a vifion in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. 23 And it came to pafs, that as foon as the days of his miniftration were accomplifhed, he departed to his own houfe. 24 And after thofe days his wife Elifabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, faying, 25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. 26 And in the fixth month the angel Gabriel was fent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin efpcufed to a man whofe name was Jofeph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and faid, Hail, thou that art highly fa voured, the Lord is with thee: bleffed art thou among women. 29 And when the faw bim the was troub led at his faying, and caft in her mind what manner of falutation this should be. 30 And the angel faid unto her. Wift ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the faying which he fpake unto them.
