$46. REV. xix. 1—1].

Rejoicing of the spiritual Church over the downfal of its idolatrous and persecuting

enemies.

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, 2 and power, unto the Lord our God: for true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the 3 blood of his servants at her hand. And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four 4 and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped 5 God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all 6 ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, 7 saying, Alleluia; for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness* Or, bright. 9 of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, a Blessed are they a Matt. xxii. which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And

§ 47. REV. xix. 11, to the end.

Probable visible manifestation of the Son of God at the final overthrow of evil, as he had appeared to the Patriarchs, and to the Apostles after his resurrection-and the commencement of a new dispensation, and the triumph of a spiritual Church.

And he hath on his vesture 16 d Ch. xvii.14. and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. And I saw an angel standing in the 17 sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; that ye may eat 18 the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, 19 and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast 20 was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat 21 upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

§ 48. REV. XX. 1—7.

After the long convulsions, and wars, and revolutions, which attended the overthrow of evil, a long millennial period of repose commences, which is represented by the binding down of Satan-As the spirits of many arose with Christ at his resurrection, the spirits of the martyrs, and of the faithful Church, are said to live again with Christ during his visible manifestation at this period. 2000-3000.

And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key 1
of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he 2
laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil,
and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into 3
the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him,
that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand
years thould be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a
little season.
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and 4
judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them
that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word
of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his
image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in
their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand

years.
But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thou- 5
sand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed 6
and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such
the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of
God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

The spiritual happiness of the heavenly Church, which has been collected from among all mankind, is further represented under the emblems of a New Jerusalem, and another Paradise; the well known types of the heavenly state under the two former dispensations.

And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had 9 the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high 10 mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God: 11 and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; and had a wall great and high, 12 and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel; on the east three gates; on the north 13 three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and 14 in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And 15 he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth 16 four-square, and the length is as large as the breadth and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and 17 four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. And the building of the wall of it was of jasper; and 18 the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the founda- 19 tions of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; 20 the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the 21 twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl; and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein: for the 22 n Is. Ix. 19. Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; 4 and his servants shall serve him: and they shall see his face; 5 and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be r Ch. xxi. 23. no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light; and they shall reign 6 for ever and ever.
