KEPT THE FAITH? A STUDY OF IMMIGRATION AND CATHOLIC GROWTH IN THE UNITED STATES 1790 TO 1920 By GERALD SHAUGHNESSY, S.M., A.B., S.T.D. Marist Seminary, Washington, D. C., formerly Professor of This is a most timely book inasmuch as it appears just as the government is making its preparations for the gathering of religious statistics in 1926. Dr. Shaughnessy traces the swing of the tide of immigration into the United States from 1790 to 1920 and in a decade-by-decade treatment of immigration, conversions, and natural increase estimates by close approximation what should have been the Catholic population in 1920. A comparison of this estimated figure with the actual population follows together with a full discussion of the ponderings of others on the question whether the loss and gain has been above or below normal. Various other problems of the Church in the United States are also discussed at length, including special attention to the problem of "leakage." THE MACMILLAN COMPANY PUBLISHERS NEW YORK |
