and accurate charging system has been used; a very few rules, easily understood and effective, have been enforced; and every effort has been put forth to make the students feel that between student and library should exist a mutual feeling of interest and respect. How productive of results these efforts have been may be judged from the following facts. During the school year 1911-1912 1,651 volumes were charged out over the loan desk to students of the institution, and in 1915-1916 the corresponding number was 7,544. During the present year and up to the present time the number is 6,010, and the number for the year bids fair to far exceed that for last year. It is to be remembered, of course, that the use of books shelved in the reading room is not included in these figures. Again, we may learn something from the statistics of attendance in the reading room, though here, owing to the difficulty of securing accurate statistics, conclusions are not so reliable. During the year 1911 -1912 the average attendance at three representative hours of the day was 31, 25, and 21 respectively, and the average attendance for the evening was II. During 1915-1916 the average attendance at the same hours was 45, 36, and 23 respectively, and for the evening, 30. The numbers for this year up to the present time are 41, 38, 22, and 38 respectively. During the period under discussion the attendance at the institution has increased by 118. We may say then that attendance at the institution has increased 22%; attendance in the reading room, 52%; books charged out, 357%; and number of books in the library, 45%.

The administration of the library lies directly in the hands of the Librarian, but there is a Library Committee that determines in a broad sense the policies of the library. More specifically it is entrusted with the general apportionment of the book fund. This Committee is composed of four department heads together with the President of the institution and the Librarian as ex officio members. This method of administrating the affairs of the library has during the six years that it has obtained proved very satisfactory.

And now this bibliography, the first of its kind coming from this library, is placed in the hands of its friends with the hope that it may serve to stimulate both the use of, and the interest for, the library. The work is far from faultless, and this no one realizes better than those who have labored over it. A printed dictionary catalog would have been eminently desirable and would have been realized also but for the lack of time and of space. Furthermore, the work would have given an added feeling of satisfaction had it included all the books in the library; but

this could not be accomplished soon enough for publication before the coming celebration, and from a point of view of value this lack will detract very little from the completeness of the bibliography. In a very few instances certain conditions made it impossible to enter under separate entry the volumes of series, of which the principal ones are American church history series,

American statesmen series,

Artist biographies,

Hart's American nation,

Harvard classics,

World's best history.

Although we realize the imperfections and the deficiencies of the work, yet are we convinced that it will be of very much help to our teachers and students and friends; and we bespeak for it the kindly and charitable interest and consideration that should be shown to every pioneer work built with and for a good purpose.

It is with feelings of the very deepest appreciation that I commend in this last line the generous, competent, and loyal assistance of the Misses Mamie Johnson and Drusilla Erickson, members of the Library Staff, in this rather exacting bibliographic task, undertaken and carried out as an addition to the regular duties of the library.
