Q. 6. What preacher has died this year?

A. Jonathan Tate. He was born in South Shields, February 8th, 1823. Blessed with pious parents, he was early instructed in the principles of religion, and from infancy was conducted to the house of God. The salutary and moral effects of his training soon appeared. In the days of his boyhood, he gave evidence of a change of heart, and was recognized as a member of our body in the town of North Shields. In 1844, a supply being wanted in the Hull Circuit, he was called out to engage in the work of the Ministry. The views and feelings with which he entered on the duties of the sacred office, plainly evinced that his heart was right with God, and that a regard to the Divine glory was the motive by which he was actuated. He laboured with great acceptance and usefulness in Hull, and subsequently in the Birmingham and Macclesfield Circuits. Genuine piety was prominent both in his spirit and deportment. As a preacher, he was faithful. Whilst his sermons were clear and pointed, some of them gave evidence of superior mental capacity. All his prepossessions and convictions were in unison with the distinctive doctrines of Methodism; and the rules and discipline of our Body. During repeated attacks of affliction his mind was sweetly sustained by the grace and Spirit of God. His last sickness was painfully severe, but he saw the hand of God in it; and to a friend he said, "This is from heaven. My earthly course is nearly run. The sting of death is gone." On the 22nd day of June, 1847, he breathed his last, and entered into

rest.
