This last word velle, non de aliis, per quas comedentes Dr. Chaloner changed into "of it," with the communionem haberent cum altari, nec following note; "that is, of the flesh of the canonem generalem voluisse tradere. Nunc thanksgiving." This is indeed the expli- autem apparet manifestissime legem gecation which is given by Onkelos and the neralem esse, quæ fertur, ansam dante carne Thargumists, and almost all commentators; sacrificii salutaris, et carnem, cujus hic mentio but this idea is very badly expressed in the fit, non de solo hoc sacrificio intelligendam, Latin Vulg.; and, even in the original, it is sed etiam de sacrificiis aliis. far from being clearly conveyed. It was this that led Michaelis to think that the order has been altered, and that we should

. The letters are all the same, only two copulatives have changed their places, and ver. 19 is supposed to end with an. On this idea Michaelis has formed his German version thus: Wenn opferfleisch von etwas unreinem berührt wurde, so soll es nicht gegessen, sondern verbrannt werden. Jeder reine kann vom fleisch des opfers essen: wer aber, &c. This emendation of the text is ingenious without being violent; yet to me it appears, in some degree, exceptionable; for, first, it will be allowed, I think, that is here more idiomatical than

precedes secondly, if we point after
and refer it to the flesh that was to be burned,
it is a very uncommon construction. We
should, in that supposition, have expected
to find after it. I am, therefore, prone
to think that we at the end of ver. 19 is an
early interpolation; and that the 19th verse

will then be הבשר . ישרף should end with
