INTRODUCTION.

THE publication of the following selection, from the writings of the late JONATHAN LAWRENCE, Jun., has been undertaken by the desire of many of his friends, and at the particular request of a literary association, of which he was for several years a zealous and active supporter. In preparing these remains for the press, limited as the circulation of the work will be, the Editor is conscious that he is acting contrary to what would probably have been the wish of the author, with regard to productions written during the intervals of assiduous application to the studies and duties of his profession, and with a few exceptions, not intended for the public eye.
