O Jesus exalted on high,
Appear our omnipotent Lord! Who meanly in Bethlehem born,
Didst stoop to redeem a lost race, Once more to thy creatures return,
And reign in thy kingdom of grace. 2. When thou in our flesh didst appear,
All nature acknowledg'd thy birth; Arose the acceptable year,
And heav'n was open'd on earth : Receiving its Lord from above,
The world was united to bless The Giver of concord and love,
The Prince and the Author of Peace. 3. wouldst thou again be made known,
Again in thy spirit descend,
A kingdom that never shali end :
And make the glad nations obey,
And bow the whole world to thy sway. 4. Come then to thy servants again,
Who long thy appearance to know;
In mercy establish below!
And anger and hatred be o'er,
And discord afflict us no more. 5. No horrid alarum of war,
Shall break our eternal repose ;
Where Jesus's Spirit oʻerflows:
We all shall in amity join,
And love with a passion like thine.
Hymn 29. s. M. 1.
Up to thy gracious throne,
Of thine incarnate Son;
We thankfully receive,
And to thy glory live. 2. Jesus, the holy child,
Doth by his birth declare,
And one in him we are ;
To all mankind is giv’n,
'twixt earth and heav'n. 3. A peace on earth he brings,
Which never more shall end;
Declares himself our friend :
That we his grace may gain,
The mortal Son of man. 4. His kingdom from above
He doth to us impart,
O'erfiow the faithful heart :
The sweet attraction find,
Embracing all mankind. 5. O might they all receive
The new-born Prince of Peace,
And meekly in his spirit live,
And in his love increase !
Cry ev'ry soul aloud,
And take us up to God!
Hymn 30. P. M. 1. LITARK! the herald-angels sing,
“ Glory to the new-born King; “ Peace on earth, and mercy mild; 4 God and sinners reconcil'd :" Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumphs of the skies; With th' angelic hosts proclaim,
" Christ is born in Bethlehem." 2. Christ, by highest heav'n ador'de
Christ the everlasting Lord;
Jesus our Immanuel here. 3. Hail, the heav'n-born Prince of Peace,
Haii, the Sun of righteousness!
Born to give them second birth. 4. Come, desire of nations, come,
Fix in us thy humble home;
Adam's likeness now efface,
Hymn 31. c. M.
13, 14. 1.
IGH let us swell our tuneful notes,
And join th' angelic throng;
T'awake a cheerful song
And peace on earth is giv'n;
With messages from heav'n.
His rising beams adorn:
Now such a child is born.
In highest worlds be paid;
And by our lives display'd.
Where Christ exalted reigns, And learn of the celestial choir,
Their own immortal strains ?
Hymn 32. L. M.
Behold the great Messiah come!
To give him the superior room!
2. Abra'm, the saint, rejoic'd of old,
When visions of the Lord he saw;
fulfiller of his law,
Obtain’d their chief design, and ceas’d; The Incense and the bleeding Lamb,
The Ark, the Altar, and the Priest. 4. Predictions in abundance meet
To join their blessings on his head;
And nations own the promis'd seed.
2. THE OFFICES OF CHRIST.
Hymn 33. c. M.
The offices of Christ. 1. TE bless the prophet of the Lord,
That comes with truth and Grace; Jesus, thy Spirit and thy word
Shall lead us in thy ways. 2. We rev'rence our High-Priest above, Who offer'd
his blood, And lives to carry on his love,
By pleading with our God. 3. We honour our exalted King;
How sweet are his commands!
By his Almighty hands.
Who saves by diff'rent ways;
To our immortal praise.
