And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, "The Spirit 18 of the LORD is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the 19 LORD." And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, 20 and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scrip- 21 ture fulfilled in your ears. And all bare him witness, and wondered at 22 the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? And he said unto them, Ye will surely say 23 unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself:' whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. And he said, Verily, 24 say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell 25 you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; but unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto 26 Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. And many 27 lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. And Simon answering, said unto him, 5 Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless, at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, 6 they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they 7 beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at 8 Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the 9 fishes which they had taken: and so was also James and John the sons 10 of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. Mark behold, a man full of leprosy; who seeing Jesus, fell on i. 40. his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand and touched him, say- 13 ing, I will: Be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and show thyself to 14 the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

And when he saw 20 their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the 21 scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? ' But 22 when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering, said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven 23 thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son 24 of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thy house. And immediately he arose up before them, and took up that 25 whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And 26 they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day!

AND he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, 20 Matt. v. viii. 1. Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. 'Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye 21 that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye when men shall hate 22 you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy; for behold, your reward is 23 great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. But wo unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 24 Wo unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Wo unto you that 25 laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Either how canst thou say to thy brother, 42 Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. For a good tree bring- 43 eth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit: for of thorns men do 44 not gather figs, nor of a bramble-bush gather they grapes. A good man, 45 out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is evil for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 46 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I 47 will show you to whom he is like. He is like a man which built a house, 48 and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock; and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth and doeth not, is 49 like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth, against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.

NOW, when he had ended all his sayings in the au- 7 dience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. And a 2 certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him 3 the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, 4 saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: for he loveth 5 our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof; wherefore neither thought 7 I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under 8 me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When 9 Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
