Anointed. The division of this community into three parts, must be explained by the event, when the prophecy shall be fulfilled. The cities of the nations may perhaps be associations for worship, pagan and idolatrous, beyond the pale of the great city, of the corrupt Christian-antichristian Church. All such are to fall at this time, before the great Lord and Conqueror, "whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all "dominions shall serve and obey Him." But of all the cities, or communities of Religion, which are opposed to the city of God and of Christ,-to the heavenly Jerusalem, the great Babylon is especially remembered. For her, (the harlot, the adulteress, the apostate Church,) the cup of God's anger, the vial of his wrath, is especially prepared. "For it is not an open enemy "that hath done me this dishonour; for then I could "have borne it ;-but it was even thou, my companion, 'my guide, and my own familiar friend t." The description therefore of this city, of her domination, and of her fall, is related; and becomes the especial subject of the two ensuing chapters; where we shall be enabled to unveil her, and to expose her abominations. So he care ried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarletcoloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads, 4 and ten horns. These “ counsel, and give | 15 faithful. And he saith "their power and their unto me, The waters which thou sawest, 14" beast. These shall where the whore sit teth, are peoples, and λαοὶ καὶ ὄχλοι εἰσὶ, καὶ ἔθνη καὶ γλῶσσαι. 16 Καὶ τὰ δέκα κέρκια, ἃ εἶδες καὶ τὸ θηρίον, ὗτοι μισήσεσι τὴν πόρνην, και ήρημων μένην ποιήσεσιν αὐτ τὴν καὶ γυμνὴν, καὶ τὰς σάρκας αὐτῆς φάγονται, καὶ αὐτὴν καλακαύσεσιν ἐν που 17ρί. Ὁ γὰρ Θεὸς ἔδω κεν εἰς τὰς καρδίας αὐτῶν ποιῆσαι τὴν γνώμην αὑτῶ, και ποιῆσαι μίαν γνώμην, καὶ δῆναι τὴν βασι λείαν αὐτῶν τῷ θη ρίῳ, ἄχρι τελεσθήσονται οἱ λόγοι το 18 Θεῖ. Καὶ ἡ γυνὴ, ἣν εἶδες, ἔσιν ἡ πόλις ἡ μεγάλη ἡ ἔχεσα βασιλείαν ἐπὶ τῶν βασιλέων τῆς γῆς. And he saith unto me; "The "waters which thou "didst see, where the "harlot is seated, are peoples, and multi"tudes, and nations, 16" and languages: And "the ten horus which "thou didst see, and "the wild-beast, these “shall hate the harlot, "and shall make her "desolate and naked; 17" And shall eat her "flesh, and burn her utterly with fire: for, "God hath put into "their hearts to per"form his counsel, and "to perform one coun"sel, and to give their "dominion to the "beast, until the words "of God shall be ac multitudes, and na tions, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whote, and shall make her desolate, and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. 17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God 18 shall be fulfilled. And the woman which thou sawest, is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. |
