2 Kings vi, 20. And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the

2 Kings xviii, 31. Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivali? have they

delivered Samaria out of mine hand?

Isa. xvii, 3. The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.

Jer. xlix, 23, 24. Concerning Damascus. Hamath is contounded, and Arpad; for they have heard evil tidings; they are faint-hearted: there is sorrow on the sea: it cannot be quiet. Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.

Amos 1, 3, 5. Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed | Gilead with threshing instruments of iron. I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.

Amos v, 27. Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.

TARSHISH,

NOTED FOR ITS SHIPPING. Gen. x, 4. And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

Ps. Ixxii, 10. The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

Isa. ii, 16. And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.

Isa. xxiii, 1. The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them.

Isa. Ix, 9. Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from

Jer. x, 9. Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. the work of

the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

Ezek. xxvii, 12, 25. Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market; and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.

Ezek. xxxviii, 13. Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

Jonah i, 3. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

Jonah iv, 2. And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying when I was yet in my country? therefore I fled before unto Tarshish.....

TYRE,

THE OLD MART OF NATIONS, AND ITS PREDICTED OVERTHROW.

2 Sam. xxiv, 7. And they cameto the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the IIivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.

Solomon sent and fetched Hiram 1 Kings vil, 13, 14. And king out of Tyre. He was a widow's son of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in brass.....

Ezra iii, 7. They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedartrees from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.

Ps. xlv, 12. And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall entreat thy favour.

Isa. xxiii, 5, 8, 15, 17. As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be sorely pained at the report of Tyre. Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth? And It shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of soventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot. And it shall come to pass, after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.

Jer. xxv, 22. And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea.

Jer. xxvii, 3. And send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the Ammonites, and to the king of Tyrus.....

Ezek. xxvi, 2. 3. Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalein, Aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people; she is turned unto me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste: Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth

his waves to come up.

Ezek. xxvii, 2, 32. Now, thou son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyrus. And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and lament over thee, saying, What city is like Tyrus, like the destroyed in the midst of the

sea?

Ezek. xxviii, 2, 12. Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD, Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God: Son of man, Take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD, Thou scalest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

Ezek. xxix. 18. Son of man, Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon caused his army to serve a great service against Tyrus: every head was made bald, and every shoulder was peeled; yet had he no wages, nor his army, for Tyrus, for the service that he had served against it.

Hosea ix, 13. Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant

ZIDON.

Gen. xlix, 13. Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships: and his border shall be unto Zidon.

Joshua xi, 8. And the LORD delivered them into the hand of smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.

1 Kings xvil, 9. Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

Isa. xxiii, 2, 4, 12. Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished. Be thou ashamed, O Zidon; for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins. and Zidon every helper that remaineth; for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.

Ezek. xxviii, 21, 22. Son of man, And say, set thy face against Zidon, and prophesy against it, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I

will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.

DESTINY OF THE EARTH.

2 Peter iii, 1-13. This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remem brance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the

I. THE FAMILY, A DIVINE INSTITUTION. Gen. ix, 1, 7. And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

FAMILY.

let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee. For thon, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house; therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee. And now, O Lord GoD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: Therefore now let it off-please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue Lord GOD, hast spoken it; and for ever before thee: for thou, with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

Job v, 24, 25. And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin. Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine spring as the grass of the earth.

Ps. cxviii, 15. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.

Ps. cxxviii. 3, 4. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive-plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

Prov. ii, 33. The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.

Mal. ii, 15. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the Spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

PRAYERS ON BEHALF OF
FAMILY.

2 Sam. vii, 18-21, 25-29. Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord Gop? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come: and is this the manner of man, O Lord God? And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GoD, knowest thy servant, For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them. And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said. And

1 Kings viii, 25, 26. Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep that thou promisedst him, saying, with thy servant David my father There shall not fail thee a man in Israel; so that thy children take my sight to sit on the throne of heed to their way, that they walk before me, as thou hast walked before me. And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my

father.

1 Chron. xvii, 17-19, 23-27. And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD

God.

What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant. O LORD, for thy servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, be established for ever, and do as thou hast said. Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee. For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee. And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this

goodness unto thy servant: Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.

Gen. xvii, 18. And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

Gen. xlviii, 8, 9. And Israel beheld Joseph's sons, and said, Who are these? And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will

1 Sam. 1, 9-11, 25-28. So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk: (now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD:) And she was in bitter ness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.
