THE SECOND EPISTLE GENERAL OF
This epistle is addressed to the same persons as the former. It was written when the apostle foresaw that his death was at no great distance; and he might hope that advice and instruction given under such circumstances would have the greater weight. The general design of it is to confirm the doctrines and instructions which he had before delivered ; to excite the Christians to adhere stedfastly to their holy religion, as a religion, not of human contrivance and invention, but proceeding from God; and to adorn it by a life of unblemished purity and goodness. As Peter is supposed to have suffered martyrdom in the year 65, we may place the date of this epistle at the beginning of that year. It was probably written from Rome.

horteth them, by faith, and good works, to make their calling sure : 12 whereof he is careful to remember them, knowing that his death is at hand: 16 and warneth them to be constant in the faith of Christ, who is the true Son of God, by the eyewitness of the apostles beholding his majesty, and by the testimony of the Father and the prophets.

"Is A. lix. 10: We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes : we stumble at noon day as in the night. 1 John, ii.9, 11 : He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes .
EPH. v. 26: That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. Heb. ix. 14: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God ? 1 John, i. 7: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
