CHAP. IV. 1

The rest of Christians is attained by faith : 12 the power of God's word : 14 by our High Priest Jesus the Son of God, subject to infirmities, but not sin, 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace.

LET a us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of

you

should seem to come short of it.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached 4 entered not in because of unbelief : 5

7 (Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye

will hear his voice, harden not

would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a "rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.)

11 Let us i labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall k after the same example of unbelief.:

m Ps. xix. 7, &c: The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul : the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart : the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever : the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold : sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned : and in keeping of them there is great reward, Isa. xlix. 2 : And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me. JER. xxiii. 29 : Is not my word like as a fire ? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Acts, ii. 37: When they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
