month Abib, to what month does that correspond?

How did the teaching of Jesus compare with the teaching of the Pharisees?-Matt. 7: 29. 15 WHAT effect had his teaching on the Jews? What did they say?

What caused their astonishment?

Did you ever hear the expression, such an one is a man of letters ?

The learning of the Jews was principally confined to the Scriptures; the teachers were scribes and priests: did Jesus ever study with any of them?

Can you tell how old Jesus was when he first conversed about the Scriptures in the temple?

Is not the study of the Bible the most important of all studies?

16 WHEN Jesus heard these questions, what did he say?

In his teachings, did Jesus always regard God and his honor?

Whose will did he come to do?- Chap. 5: 30. 17 How did Jesus tell them any man might know whether his instructions were true?

Could you tell whether sugar was sweet, with-
out tasting it?

Are most persons willing to do what pleases
God?

Would a child, who had stolen, be glad to know
that there was a law that would punish him
for it?

Does the law of God condemn sinners? - Gal. 3: 10.

Is this law just or unjust?

Then can you tell the reason why men do not love this law?

18 WHAT does he who speaks of himself seek?

Do you know any children who talk a great deal about themselves?

If you see a child who often speaks of his father and mother, do you think that child loves his parents?

What is said of one who seeks the honor of him that sent him?

Did Jesus do this?

19 WHO gave the Jews the law?

Did they acknowledge this?- Chap. 5: 45.
Did they keep the law?

Was the spirit of unkindness and hatred, which
they cherished, opposed to the law of Moses?
What did they seek to do to Jesus?

Had they any good reason for this? 20 WHAT did the people say?

What did they mean by this? - Chap. 10: 20. Have you not seen some deranged persons who thought others were designing to kill them? But did not Jesus know the hearts of the Jewish rulers better than the people did? Which command of the law did they violate by these feelings toward Jesus?— 1 John 3:15. What effect did this charge produce on them? 21 DID Jesus reply to their question directly? How were the people affected with the miracle which he had performed?

[ocr errors]

To what miracle did Jesus refer? Ch. 5 : 8.
Were the Jews angry with him for this miracle?
On what account?

22 WHAT did Jesus say to the people?

The Jews ascribed all their rites to Moses, and he enjoined on them circumcision; but who first practised it? Gen. 17:23.

Who then is meant by the fathers?

On what day did they circumcise a child? Were they guilty of the same thing of which they charged him ?

At what age was this rite performed ? - Gen

17:12.

23 WHAT question did he ask?

-

What else could be done on the Sabbath, without violating the law of Moses in regard to that day?

Would not these men kill a sacrifice, or circumcise a child on the Sabbath?

Then should they be angry with him for healing the lame man on that day?

24 WHAT therefore did Jesus say to them? Is this an important rule?

Should we be very careful in deciding on the conduct of others?

Would it be right for you to say, that a child whom you saw walking on the Sabbath, was breaking God's law?

Would he violate this law?

How?

Suppose he were coming to Sabbath school, or going after a physician, would that be violating the Sabbath?

For what was the Sabbath given us?

How many years of Sabbaths has a person lived, who is fifty years old?

Can any one complain, then, that he has not time to attend to religion?

Will you repeat the command to keep the Sabbath? Ex. 20:8-11.

How many Sabbaths have you lived?

Have you kept them in such a manner as to please God?

LESSON XXI.

Jesus continues teaching in the Temple.

CH. vii. 25-36.

25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is; but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me ?

30 Then they sought to take him, but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

31 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh,

will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot

come.

35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come ?

DID the Jews consider it a violation of the law of the Sabbath, to circumcise one of their children, or offer sacrifice on that day?

How did they feel towards Jesus because he
healed the lame man?

Did he do right in healing the man on the
Sabbath?

Could he not do what he pleased on the Sab-
bath? Luke 6: 5.

Did Jesus know that his conversation would provoke the Jews to kill him ?

5 WHAT did some of the people say?

Was it the common people, or the scribes and

- Mark

Pharisees, who sought to kill Jesus? 12:37. 26 WHAT question did they ask among themselves? Do you think the rulers acted ignorantly, and supposed Jesus a bad man?

Then what do you think of them?

Did Jesus stop teaching the people, or reproving the wicked, because they sought to kill him?

If wicked men should command a minister, that he must not preach any more, would it be right for him to obey them?

What is said of those who seek to save their lives in this manner?-Matt. 16:25.

When they saw how bold he was, what did they say?

27 They were not willing to receive him; what reason did they give?

Do you know in what city he was born?
Matt. 2: 1.

In what place did he live for a long time?
Matt. 2: 23.

28 WHEN Jesus heard this, what did he say?

Did they know the designs of God in sending him into the world?

"What did the disciples say after his death? Luke 24: 21.

Yet is he not a God of truth, and worthy of all confidence?

29 DID Jesus know the Father fully?

Why did he so perfectly know his character and will ?

He declares himself sent of God; then how should he be regarded as a Teacher ?

30 DID they so regard him?

What did they then seek to do?
