LESSON

VIII.

Conversation with the Samaritan Woman con

tinued.

CH. iv. 16-- 34.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband in that saidst thou truly. 19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, beieve me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that wor ship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29 Come, see a man, which told me. all things that ever I did is not this the Christ?

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

31 In the meanwhile his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

33 Therefore said his disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat?

34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

To what did Jesus compare his instructions in his conversation with the woman at the well? Though she did not fully comprehend his meaning, what effect was produced on her mind? 16 WHAT did Jesus direct the woman to do? 17 WHAT did the woman say?

What was the reply of Jesus to her?

What did he mean by Thou hast well said? Do you think it well to confess your faults? 18 JESUS sought to make upon her a deep impression of his knowledge of her heart; how did he do it?

How many husbands had this woman had : Was it right for her to live with a man as her husband, who was not such?

Which of the commandments was she violating? Exod. 20: 14.

Do you not think she was surprised, to find
Jesus knew all her conduct?

Does he know yours as well as he did hers ?——
Ps. 139: 1, 2, 3.

19 WHAT did the woman then say she perceived? Why do you think she called him a prophet? Do men, when they prophesy, or tell what will

take place in future, know any thing which God does not communicate to them?

20 SHE endeavors to turn his mind to something else what did she say?

What mountain was this?

Where did the Jews say was the place to worship?

Did the Jews come up to Jerusalem every year?-Deut. 12: 5, 6.

Is it probable that all the Jews, who came up to Jerusalem, really worshipped God in their hearts?

21 THE Woman had professed to believe Jesus was a prophet; ought she not, then, to have believed what he said?

What did he say to her?

Which is the most important in religious worship; the place where, or the manner in which we worship?

Has not the time now come, when people do not feel obliged to go to any particular city or town to worship God?

22 DID the Samaritans understand the true object of worship?

Did the Jews possess more knowledge of God than the Samaritans?

What did Jesus say was of the Jews?

Of what nation was Mary, the mother of Jesus? Then, as the Savior was of the Jewish kindred, and salvation is only through him, is it not of the Jews?

Is Jesus called a Jew?- Luke 2: 3. 25 WHAT did Jesus say should come?

near?

Was it

Whom did he say the true worshippers now worshipped?

In what manner?

Are any prayers acceptable to God, beside the

real desires of the soul?

Do you not sometimes repeat prayers, when you do not really pray ?

Whom does God seek to worship him? - Ch.

4: 24.

24 WHAT is God?

Can you name some of the points in which spirit differs from matter?

Now you cannot see a spirit, and since God is a Spirit, do you not perceive that he can be with you, and yet not be seen?

Do you love to have your father with you in the night, or when you think you are in danger? But are there not many dangers from which your father cannot deliver you?

Can God, though unseen, deliver you from all danger, or prepare you to meet those from which he does not deliver you?

Is it not a delightful thought, that this almighty, unseen Spirit watches over and protects all who love him?

Is it not an awfully solemn thought, that he knows and will punish all who disregard his word?

Does this unseen Spirit see your spirit ?

Now do you not see why all, whose worship he accepts, must offer it with sincere hearts? What impression do you think this solemn truth made on the woman's mind?

25 WHAT did she say?

About what things do you think she supposed the Messiah would tell the people ?

26 THEN What did Jesus say?

Should you not think she would believe this declaration of Jesus, since he had shown her that he knew all about her?

27 AT this time who came up?

How did they feel, when they saw he had been conversing with this Samaritan woman ? What is this feeling called?

Is it right to indulge a feeling of prejudice against any one?

Would the teachers among the Jews have done this?

The Pharisaical priests despised women: did they injure the poor and neglect those in trouble? Matt. 23: 14. Luke 10: 31, 32. Did Jesus neglect the poor and needy?- Matt. 15:30, 32.

Do you think this woman believed the declaration of Jesus?

28 WHAT did she do?

Into what city did she go?

29 WHAT did she say to the men?

What question did she ask?

Had Jesus told the woman that he was the
Christ? v. 26.

30 WHAT did the people of the city do?

31 At this time, what did his disciples desire him to do?

As he had travelled a great distance, and was much fatigued, is it not probable he was hungry?

32 WHAT reply did Jesus make ?

Is the term meat here used instead of the word food?

33 WHAT did the disciples say among themselves? Did they understand what Jesus meant?

84 THEN what did he tell them was his food? Do you not sometimes enjoy the society of your friends as much as you do eating your food? Does not doing that which is pleasant to the feelings, delight and animate the soul, as food refreshes and sustains the body?

Should you not seek to do the will of God more anxiously than you seek for food?

What ought you to do for that Savior who was forsaken of God, that you might obtain his favor?

LESSON IX.

Jesus teaches the Samaritans, and heals the Ruler's

Son.

CH. iv. 35-54.

35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest ? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest.

36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors.

39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he

would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

41 And many more believed because of his own word;

42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.

43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own coun⚫ try.

45 Then, when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast for they also went unto the feast.

46 So Jesus came again into Cana of
