If you were going to a certain place, and a friend should tell you it would be very dangerous to do so; then if you did not go, would it show that you believed what he had said was true?

What does set to his seal that God is true, mean?

REVIEW.

What important topic has been under consideration in the last three lessons?

Would you prefer to have seen the miracle of Cana, or to have heard the conversation with Nicodemus?

Would you have asked him about your own heart?

Can you tell, whether Jesus was at Cana again? On what occasion afterward did Nicodemus manifest himself to Jesus? -7: 51.

If he were an open friend, what would he have done at such a time?

The subject about which he conversed was very important; what improper language did he use?

Jesus introduced the subject of Moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness; what did he intimate in regard to himself in this connex- . ion?

For what did God send his Son into the world?
Are all men liable to be lost at this time?
How can any be delivered?

Will such as do not believe be saved? — Mark

16: 16.

Will all men hear of a Savior? - Isa. 11 : 9.

LESSON VII.

Conversation with the Woman at the Well.

CH. iv. 1-15.

1 When therefore the Lord knew how I the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

3 He left Judea, and departed again into Galilee.

4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his jour ney, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, 'askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews

have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep from whence then hast thou that living water?

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirat but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

In the last lesson, we learned that Jesus was the messenger of God.

What did he declare those who believed on him have?

What awfully solemn declaration did he make concerning such as do not believe on him? 1 WHAT did the Lord know that the Pharisees had heard?

Had John, before this, baptized many persons? - Matt. 3: 5, 6.

-

Do you think these Pharisees were pleased, that so many people received this new doc

trine preached by Jesus, and came to him for baptisin?

Did Jesus think the Pharisees taught the truth? - Matt. 15: 14.

2 DID Jesus himself baptize any persons? What is said in Chap. 3: 22, 26 ?

Have you not heard people speak of a man's building a house, when they only meant that he directed it to be built by others?

3 WHAT did Jesus do?

Where was he at this time?- Chap. 2: 13. What country was between Judea and Galilee ? 4 WHAT Country must he pass through to get into Galilee?

5 To what city did he come ?

Near what mountain was this place? See map. What was this city called a great many years before?-Gen. 33: 18.

What is it called in Acts 7: 16?

To whom was a parcel of ground, near this city, given ?

Where do you find an account of this ?— Gen. 48: 21, 22.

.

Will you relate the particulars?

6 WHAT was there in this place? What did he do to rest him?

About what time of day was this? 7 WHAT other person came to the well? Of what country was she?

What did Jesus ask of her?

8 WHERE were the disciples ?

9

For what purpose?

Do you think ineat here means food of any kind?
WHAT did the woman say to Jesus?

Did the proud Pharisees consider it lawful for
Jews to associate with any other people?-

Acts 10: 28.

Did she expect any attention from Jesus?

10 THEN What did he say to the woman? Is not a knowledge of God and Jesus Christ as necessary to the eternal life of the soul, as water is for the life of the body?

Under what figure did Jesus refer to heavenly blessings?

What do you think Jesus meant, by living water?

11 DID she understand what he meant ?

What did she say to him?

By this, should you not think she expected he would draw water from this well?

12 WHAT did she ask him ?

13 How did Jesus reply to her question?

14 WHAT did he say of those who drank of the water (i. e., who received the instructions), which he would give?

Are men who have studied a great while, and learned a great many things, pleased with the little picture books of children?

Should you suppose those who receive the instructions of God's Word, and expect to go to heaven, would very much thirst for, or desire, the things of this world?

Will not the child who loves God with all his heart, and always obeys him, have eternal life? Chap. 3: 16.

What does this verse mean?

15 THEN What did the woman say to Jesus? Do you think she understood fully what Jesus meant by what he had said?

Does sin blind the mind in regard to spiritual things?-2 Cor. 4: 4.

If those who receive the instructions of Jesus, and obey his precepts, are to be so favored, will you not carefully consider them?

What effect has the instruction which you have already received, had on you?
