PART I.

FESTIVALS, OR HOLY TIMES. 1-41.

1. Advent.

Hark, the glad sound! the Saviour comes,
The Saviour promised long:

Let every heart exult with joy,

And

every

voice be song.

He comes, the prisoners to release,
In Satan's bondage held:

The gates of brass before Him burst;
The iron fetters yield.

He comes, from darkening scales of vice
To clear the inward sight;

And on the eye-balls of the blind
To pour celestial light.

He comes, the broken hearts to bind,
The bleeding souls to cure;
And with the treasures of His grace
To enrich the humble poor.

Our glad Hosannahs, Prince of Peace!
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And heaven's exalted arches ring
With Thy most honoured Name.

2. Second Advent.

Lo, He comes! with clouds descending, Once for favoured sinners slain : Thousand thousand saints attending Swell the triumph of His train :

Hallelujah! Hallelujah !

Christ is come to earth again.

Every eye

shall now behold Him,

Robed in awful majesty ;

Those who set at nought, and sold Him, Pierced and nailed Him to the tree, Deeply wailing, deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

Every island, sea, and mountain,

Heaven and earth, shall flee away; All who hate Him, must, confounded, Hear the trump proclaim the day: Come to judgment, come to judgment, Come to judgment, come away!

Now redemption, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear!
All His saints, by man rejected,
Rise and meet Him in the air!
Hallelujah Hallelujah!
See the day of God appear!

Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,
High on Thine eternal throne!
Saviour, take the power and glory!
Claim the kingdom for Thine own!
O come quickly, O come quickly!
Come, and make Thy glories known.

3. Second Advent.

The Lord will come! the earth shall quake,
The hills their fixed seat forsake;

And, withering from the vault of night,
The stars withdraw their feeble light.

The Lord will come! but not the same
As once in lonely form He came ;
A silent Lamb to slaughter led,
The bruised, the suffering, the dead.

The Lord will come! a dreadful form,
With wreath of flame, and robe of storm,
On cherub wings, and wings of wind,
Anointed Judge of human kind.

Can this be He who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway;
By power oppressed, and mocked by pride?
Oh God! is this the crucified?

Go, tyrants, to the rocks complain!
. Go, seek the mountain's clefts in vain!
But Faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy, "The Lord is come."

4. Christmas-day.

Hark! the herald-angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King:
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies:
With the angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Hark! the herald-angels sing, Glory to the new-born King; Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the Incarnate Deity!

Pleased as man with men t' appear,

Jesus our Immanuel here.

Hark! the herald-angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King.
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Mild, He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth;
Born to give them second birth.

5. Christmas-day.

The race that long in darkness pined
Have seen a glorious light:

The people dwell in light, who dwelt,
In death's surrounding night.

To hail Thy rise, Thou better Sun!
The gathering nations come,
Joyous, as when the reapers bear
The harvest-treasures home.

For Thou our burden hast removed, And quelled the oppressor's sway, Quick as the slaughtered squadrons fell In Midian's evil day.

To us a Child of hope is born,

To us a Son is given:

Him shall the tribes of earth obey;

Him, all the hosts of heaven.

His Name shall be the Prince of Peace, For evermore adored;

The Wonderful, the Counsellor,

The great and mighty Lord.

His power increasing still shall spread; His reign no end shall know: Justice shall guard His throne above And peace abound below.
