PREFACE

THE UNION SPELLING BOOK is designed to succeed the UNION PRIMER; and a proper knowledge of the Primer will fit any child to begin the Spelling Book. Both books are constructed on the same principle.*

The lessons in the Spelling Book are of a simple but instructive character, adapted to the circumstances of children of all classes in the United States.

As the cultivation of music is an important branch of popular instruction, a few simple tunes are introduced. They are such as children generally can learn by hearing them sung two or three times. They add nothing to the expense of the work, and may serve to remind teachers and parents of a neglected duty.+

* See preface to Union Primer, by American Sunday-school Union. † As there is a difference of opinion on this subject, we shall be prepared to supply copies of the Spelling Book, in any number, without the music.
