PREFACE THE UNION SPELLING BOOK is designed to succeed the UNION PRIMER; and a proper knowledge of the Primer will fit any child to begin the Spelling Book. Both books are constructed on the same principle.* The lessons in the Spelling Book are of a simple but instructive character, adapted to the circumstances of children of all classes in the United States. As the cultivation of music is an important branch of popular instruction, a few simple tunes are introduced. They are such as children generally can learn by hearing them sung two or three times.
