duce the desirable effect of improving the hearts and minds of men of different persuasions and degrees of understanding. For historical and some other passages are liable to the doubts and disputes of free-thinkers and antichristians, especially miraculous relations, which are much less wonderful than the fabricated tales handed down to the natives of Asia*, and consequently would be apt at best to carry little weight with them. On the contrary moral doctrines, tending evidently to the maintenance of the peace and harmony of mankind at large, are beyond the reach of metaphysical per version, and intelligible alike to the learned and to the unlearned. This simple code of Religion and morality is so admirably calculated to elevate men's ideas to high and liberal notions of one God, whor has equally subjected all living creatures, without distinction of cast, rank, or wealth, to change, disappointment, pain, and death; and has equally ads mitted all to be partakers of the bountiful mercies: which he has lavished over nature: and is also so well fitted to regulate the conduct of the human race in the discharge of their various duties to God, to themselves, and to Society, that I cannot but hope the best effects from its promulgation in the present form.

Therefore, when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet be. fore thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of inen. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth : that thine alıns may be in secret : and thy Father, which seeth in secret, himself shall reward thee openly.
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are : for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and, when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret and thy Father, which seeth in secret,, shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repe titions, as the beathen do for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like upto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray yet Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will, be done in earth, as it is in heayen : give us this day our daily bread : and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil : for thiye is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
