436 I Love to Steal Awhile Away.
I I love to steal awhile away

From every cumbering care,
And spend the hours of setting day
In humble, grateful prayer.

2 I love in solitude to shed

The penitential tear,
And all his promises to plead,
Where none but God can hear.

3 I love to think on mercies past,
And future good implore,
And all my cares and sorrows cast
On him whom I adore.

4 I love by faith to take a view

Of brighter scenes in heaven; The prospect does my strength renew While here by tempests driven.

1. When all thy mercies, O my God! My ris-ing soul surveys,

Transported with the view, I'm lost In won ·

der, love and praise

ZE

2 Unnumbered comforts on my soul Thy tender care bestowed, Before my infant heart conceived

From whom those comforts flowed.

3 When in the slippery paths of youth 5
With heedless steps I ran,
Thine arm, unseen, conveyed me safe,
And led me up to man.

4 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart

That tastes those gifts with joy.
Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue,

And after death in distant worlds
The glorious theme renew.

Dennis. S. M.

443 Blest be the Tie that Binds.

I Blest be the tie that binds

Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.

2 Before our Father's throne

We pour our ardent prayers;

Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
Our comforts and our cares.

3 We share our mutual woes,

Our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.

4 When we asunder part,

It gives us inward pain;

But we shall still be joined in heart,
And hope to meet again.

444

How Gentle God's Commands! I How gentle God's commands!

How kind his precepts are! Come, cast your burdens on the Lord, And trust his constant care.

2 His bounty will provide,

His saints securely dwell;

That hand which bears creation up,
Shall guard his children well.

3 Why should this anxious load

Press down your weary mind?

Oh, seek your heavenly Father's throne,
And peace and comfort find!

4 His goodness stands approved,
Unchanged from day to day;
I'll drop my burden at his feet,
And bear a song away.

445 Sow in the Morn thy Seed.

Sow in the morn thy seed;

At eve hold not thy hand;

To doubt and fear give thou no need, Broadcast it o'er the land.

2 Thou know'st not which shall thrive,
The late or early sown;
Grace keeps the precious germ alive,
When and wherever strown.

3 Thou canst not toil in vain;

Cold, heat, and moist, and dry, Shall foster and mature the grain For garners in the sky.

4 Then, when the glorious end,
The day of God, shall come,
The angel reapers shall descend,
And heaven shout, "Harvest home!"

446 Did Christ o'er Sinners weep.

I Did Christ o'er sinners weep, And shall our cheeks be dry? Let floods of penitential grief Burst forth from every eye.

2 The Son of God in tears
The wondering angels see!
Be thou astonished, O my soul;
He shed those tears for thee.

3 He wept that we might weep:
Each sin demands a tear:
In heaven alone no sin is found,
And there's no weeping there.

448 0 that the Lord would Guide.

I O that the Lord would guide my way
To keep his statutes still!

Oh that my God would grant me grace
To know and do his will!

2 Oh, send thy Spirit down to write
Thy law upon my heart;
Nor let my tongue indulge deceit,
Nor act the liar's part.

3 Order my footsteps by thy word,
And make my heart sincere:
Let sin have no dominion, Lord,
But keep my conscience clear.
4 My soul hath gone too far astray,
My feet too often slip;
Yet, since I've not forgot thy way,
Restore thy wandering sheep.

5 Make me to walk in thy commands,
'Tis a delightful road;

Nor let my head, or heart, or hands
Offend against my God.

[blocks in formation]

With every fleeting breath; So shall the music of thy name Refresh my soul in death.

2 With pitying eyes the Prince of grace Beheld our helpless grief;

He saw, and-oh, amazing love!-
He ran to our relief.

3 Down from the shining seats above,
With joyful haste he fled,
Entered the grave in mortal flesh,
And dwelt among the dead.

4 Oh for this love let rocks and hills
Their lasting silence break,
And all harmonious human tongues
The Saviour's praises speak.
450. The Saviour Calls; let every Ear.
I The Saviour calls; let every ear
Attend the heavenly sound;
Ye doubting souls, dismiss your fear,
Hope smiles reviving round.

2 For every thirsty, longing heart,
Here streams of bounty flow,
And life, and health, and bliss impart
To banish mortal woe.

3 Ye sinners, come, 'tis mercy's voice;
The gracious call obey;
Mercy invites to heavenly joys,-
And can you yet delay?

4 Dear Saviour, draw reluctant hearts; To thee let sinners fly,

And take the bliss that love imparts, And drink, and never die.
