The Epistle. Ephef. iv. 17..

HIS I fay therefore, and teftify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind; having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: who being paft feeling, have given themselves over unto lafcivioufnefs, to work all uncleannefs with greedinefs. But ye have not fo learned Chrift: If fo be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jefus: That ye put off, concerning the former converfation, the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lufts; and be renewed in the fpirit of your mind, and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteoufnefs and true holiness, Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour; for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and fin not. Let not the fun go down upon your wrath neither give place to the devil.. Let him that stole, steal no more; but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good, to the ufe of edifying, that it may minifter grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God,

The Gofpel. St Matth. ix. 1.

ESUS entered into a fhip, and paffed over, and came into his own city. And behold, they brought to him a man fick of the palfy, lying on a bed. And Jefus feeing their faith, faid unto the fick of the palfy, Son, be of good cheer, thy fins be forgiven thee. And behold, certain of the fcribes faid within themselves, This man blafphemeth. And Jefus, knowing their thoughts, faid, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is eafier to fay, Thy fins be forgiven thee? or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive fins, (then faith he to the fick of the palfy) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine houfe. And he arofe, and departed to his houfe. But when the multitude faw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, who had given fuch power unto men.

The Gospel. St Matth. xxii. 1.

ESUS faid, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, who made a marriage for his fon; and sent forth his fervants to call them that were bidden to the wedding; and they would not come. Again, he fent forth other fervants, faying, Tell them who are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready, come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandife: and the remnant took his fervants, and intreated them fpitefully, and flew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth; and he fent forth his armies, and deftroyed those murderers, and burnt up their city. Then faith he to his fervants, The wedding is ready, but they who were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the high-ways, and as many as ye fhall find bid to the marriage. So thofe fervant went out into the high-ways, and gathered together all, as many as they found, both bad and good; and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guefts, he faw there a man who had not on a wedding-garment. And he faith unto him, Friend, how cameft thou in hither, not having a wedding-garment? and he was speechlefs. Then faid the king to the fervants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and caft him into outer darkness: There fhall be weeping and gnafhing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chofen.

The Epiftle. Ephef. vi. 10.

Y brethren, be ftrong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to ftand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, againft fpiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to ftand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breaft-plate of righteoufnefs; and your feet fhod with the preparation of the gospel of peace: Above all, taking the fhield of faith, wherewith ye fhall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of falvation, and the fword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and fupplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perfeverance and fupplication for all faints, and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the Gofpel; for which I am an ambaffador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

PARAPHRASE.

On the COLLECT for the one and twentieth Sunday after Trinity. O merciful Lord, we thy faithful fervants implore thy forgiveness for our numerous tranfgreffions, and intreat thee to blefs us with tranquillity in all our circumftances of life; that our fins may be abfolved by thy remiffion of them, and that we may pay our conftant devotion to thee, being free from all anxiety and disturbance; which favour we request for the fake of Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

The Gospel. St John iv. 46.

HERE was a certain nobleman, whofe fon was fick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jefus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him, and befought him, that he would come down and heal his fon; for he was at the point of death. Then faid Jefus unto him, Except ye fee figns and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman faith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. Jefus faith unto him, Go thy way, thy fon liveth. And the man believed the word that Jefus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his fervants met him, and told him, faying, Thy fon liveth. Them enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend: And they faid unto him, Yesterday at the feventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the fame hour, in the which Jefus faid unto him, Thy fon liveth; and himfelf believed, and his whole houfe. This is again the second miracle that Jefus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.
