O Almighty God, grant, we beseech thee, that we who by the calamities we undergo in this world, are punished less than our iniquities deferve, (Ezra ix. 13.) and, on account of our numerous violations of thy divine law, do dread thy jaft vengeance falling on us; may; by thy mercifal goodness be delivered from our affli&ions; and by the powerful influeace of thy grace, exciting us to a reformation of our lives, may avoid the etereal punishment which we have incurred by our fins; and this we beg for the lake of our Lord Jesus Chrift. is the mother of us all. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lift up his eyes, and faw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat ? (And this he said to prove him ; for he himself knew what he would do.) Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is. not fufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Perer's brother, faith unto him, There is a lad here which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes; but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men fit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men fat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down ; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be loft. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. The Epiftle. Heb. ix. 11.
come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to fay, not of this building ; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls, and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, fanctifieth to the purifying of the Relh ; how much more shall the blood of Christ, who, through the eternal spirit, offered himself without fpot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? and for this cause he is the Mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
