O Lord Jefus Chrift, who, to fet us an example of abftinence, and teach us to refift the temptations of the devil, didft fast forty days and forty nights, (Matt. iv. 2.) give us grace to imitate thee in this virtue as far as our nature is capable, that when foever the flesh rifeth against the fpirit, (Gal. v. 14.) we may be enabled, by thy affiftance, to furmount its temptations, and may act according to thofe holy fuggeftions which thou doft infufe into our minds, by leading virtuous and holy lives, agreeable to the dictates of thy holy Spirit, fo that our conduct, for the time to come, may tend to the honour of thee, O bleffed Saviour, who liveft and reigneft, &c. ters of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in neceffities, in diftreffes, in ftripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in faftings; by purenefs, by knowledge, by long-fuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteoufnefs on the right hand and on the left, by honour and difhonour, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chaftened, and not killed; as forrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet poffeffing all things.

The Gospel. St Matth. iv. 1.

HEN was Jefus led up of the fpirit into the wilderness, to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fafted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he faid, If thou be the Son of God, command that thefe ftones be made bread. But he answered and faid, It is written, Man fhall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and fetteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and faith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, caft thyself down; for it is written, He fhall give his angels charge concerning thee, and in their hands they fhall bear thee up, left at any time thou dafh thy foot against a stone. Jefus faid unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and fheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and faith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then faith Jefus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only fhalt thou ferve. Then the devil leaveth him, and behold, angels came and miniftered unto him.

WE befeech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jefus, that as ye have received of us how you ought to walk, and to please God, fo ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jefus. For this is the will of God, even your fan&tification, that ye fhould abftain from fornication; that every one of you fhould know how to poffefs his veffel in fanctification and honour; not in the luft of concupifcence, even as the Gentiles which know not God; that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter, becaufe that the Lord is the avenger of all fuch, as we alfo have forwarned you, and teftified. For God hath not called us unto uncleannefs, but unto holinefs. He therefore that defpifeth, defpifeth not man, but God, who hath alfo given unto us his Holy Spirit.

any inheritance in the kingdom of Chrift, and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of difobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them; for ye were fometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord : walk as children of light (For the fruit of the spirit is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them: for it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in fecret. But all things that are reproved, are made manifeft by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifeft, is light. The Gospel. St Luke xi. 14.

ESUS was cafting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb fpake; and the people wondered. But fome of them faid, He cafteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And others tempting him, fought of him a fign from heaven. But he knowing their thoughts, faid unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself, is brought to defolation; and a houfe divided againft a houfe, falleth. If Satan alfo be divided against himself, how fhall his kingdom ftand? becaufe ye fay that I caft out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub caft out devils, by whom do your fons caft them out? therefore fhall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God caft out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a ftrong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace; but when a ftronger than he fhall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trufted, and divideth his poils.
