INTRODUCTION.

In a previous edition of this work, I observed that "In this help to a knowledge of the kingdom of God as contained in the scriptures, where the words spirit, spiritual, spiritually, are used when speaking of spiritual things, I have generally used the words, Word, wordual, wordually, which are words of the same meaning; and where the words, Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit are used, I have generally used the words, Holy Word, which are words of the same meaning. The word Word, though it may have different sounds, must have the same meaning in all languages; for speech is just the spoken words, and spoken words are just the expressed thoughts of Word. This use of the word Word is not meant to interfere with the word Spirit as at present used, but is meant as a help to the more ready and the better understanding of heavenly things; which I think it will be found to be, and which I think is the reason of its use in scripture. I have retained the word spirit as applied at present to animal life, and have extended the use of it to vegetable life." And it is indeed true, that Word is used in scripture as a name of our Lord, and is therein helpful to the understanding of heavenly things. But on more mature consideration I am of opinion, that as Word could not be substituted for Spirit in a translation of the scriptures, from man and the spirit
