DISCOURSE VI.
THE DESIGN OF AFFLICTION.
Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns,
and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths; and
she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not over-
take them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find
them; then shall she say, I will go and return to my
first husband; for then was it better with me than now. Hosea ü. 6, 7.

DISCOURSE IX.
THE CURE OF BLIND BARTIMEUS.
And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho,
a certain blind man sat by the way-side, begging: and
hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant,
and they told him that Jesus of Nazareth passed by:
and he cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have
mercy on me. And they who went before rebuked
him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so
much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
And Jesus stood and commanded him to be brought
unto him, and when he was come near, he asked him,
saying, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee:
and he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight; and
Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight; thy faith hath
saved thee: and immediately he received his sight, and
followed him, glorifying God. --Luke xviii. 35-43. 110

MARTHA AND MARY.
Now, it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a
certain village; and a certain woman, named Martha, re-
ceived him into her house : and she had a sister, called
Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word;
but Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came
to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister
hath left me to serve alone? bid her, therefore, that she
help me: And Jesus answered and said unto her, Mar-
tha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many
things; but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen
that good part, which shall not be taken away from her

within, and Thomas with them. Then came Jesus, the
