9:5

264

2 Thy light upon our evening pour,
So may our souls no sunset see;
And death to us an open door,
To an eternal morning be.

I.

98 SAVIOUR, breathe an evening blessing,

Ere repose our spirits seal;

Sin and want we come confessing,

Thou canst save and thou canst heal.

2 Though destruction walk around us,
Though the arrows past us fly,
Angel guards from thee surround us,
We are safe, if thou art nigh.

3 Though the night be dark and dreary,
Darkness cannot hide from thee;

Thou art he who, never weary,
Watchest where thy people be.

of my soul! thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if thou be near;
Oh! may no earth-born cloud arise,
To hide thee from thy servant's eyes.

2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
my
last thought, how sweet to rest
With thy divine protection blest.

Be

3 Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without thee I can not live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without thee I dare not die.

4 If some poor wandering child of thine,
Have spurned, to-day, the voice divine,
Now, Lord, the gracious work begin,
Let him no more lie down in sin.

5 Come near, and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take

Till, in the ocean of thy love,

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

9:4

100 SOFTLY now the light of day

Fades upon my sight away;

Free from care, from labor free,
Lord, I would commune with thee.
Thou whose all-pervading eye

Naught escapes, without, within,
Pardon each infirmity,

Open fault and secret sin.

2 Soon the light of this world's day
From my sight shall pass away;
Then from sin, from sorrow free,
Take me, Lord, to dwell with thee.
With the blessed angel throng
In the realms of light above,
Then shall rise my grateful song,
Praising thy redeeming love.

[blocks in formation]

101 DEAR Saviour, bless us ere we go;

Thy word into our minds instill;

And make our lukewarm hearts to glow
With lowly love and fervent will.

2 The day is gone, its hours have run,
And thou hast taken count of all,
The scanty triumphs grace hath won,
The broken vow, the frequent fall.

3 Grant us, dear Lord, from evil ways
True absolution and release;
And bless us, more than in past days,'
With purity and inward peace.

4 Do more than pardon; give us joy,
Sweet fear, and sober liberty,
And simple hearts without alloy
That only long to be like thee.

5 Labor is sweet, for thou hast toiled;
And care is light, for thou hast cared,
Ah! never let our works be soiled

With strife, or by deceit ensnared.

6 For all we love, the poor, the sad,
The sinful, unto thee we call;
O let thy mercy make us glad ;
Thou art our Jesus, and our All.

LORY to thee, my God, this night,

102 GL

For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath the shadow of thy wings.

2 Forgive, dear Lord, thou holy One,
The ills that I this day have done;
That with myself, the world, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Lord, let my soul forever share

The bliss of thy paternal care:

"T is heaven on earth, 't is heaven above,
To see thy face, and feel thy love.
