RESURRECTION OF CHRIST.

Resurrection of Christ.

8.8.6.

1 JESUS, who died our souls to save,
Revives and rises from the grave
By his Almighty power:

From sin and death, and Satan free,
He captive leads captivity,

And lives to die no more.

2 Children of God, look up, and see
Your Saviour clothed with majesty,
Triumphant o'er the tomb :"

Cease, cease to grieve, cast off your fears,
In heaven your mansion he prepares,
And soon will call you home.

3 His church is still his joy and crown,
He looks with love and pity down

On her he did redeem:

Each member of his church he knows,
He shares their joys, and feels their woes,
And they shall reign with him.

196. Certainty of Christ's Resurrection. L.M.

1 IF Jesus rose not from the grave,
The faith of all his saints is vain ;
That he can have no power to save,

If death detains him still, is plain.
2 If Jesus rose not from the grave,
We're guilty still, our sins remain ;
The hope is vain his people have,
If Jesus rose not, all is vain.

3 If Jesus rose not from the grave,

Our faith in him, is empty boast;
Our claims, no just foundation have;
And they who sleep in him are lost.
4 But now is Jesus ris'n indeed;

The first-fruits He of those who sleep :
Rejoice, ye saints, the pris'ner's freed ;
For who could such a pris'ner keep?

5 He fought with death, the saint's last foe, And though he seem'd to lose the day, 'Twas death sustained the overthrow, Subdued by Him, who seem'd his prey.

197. Triumphs of Christ's Resurrection. 8.7.4.
1 COME, ye saints, look here and wonder,
See the place where Jesus lay:

He has burst his bands asunder;
He has borne our sins away.
Joyful tidings!

Yes, the Lord is ris'n to-day.
2 Jesus triumphs! sing ye praises;
'Twas by death he overcame :
Thus the Lord his glory raises,
Thus he fills his foes with shame ;
Sing ye praises,

Glory in the Saviour's name.

3 Jesus triumphs! countless legions
Come from heav'n to meet their King;
Soon, in yonder happy regions,
We shall join his praise to sing :
Songs eternal

Shall through heav'n's high arches ring.

198. Christ's Resurrection celebrated.
1 CHRIST, the Lord, is risen to-day!
Sons of men, and angels, say;
Raise your joys and triumphs high,
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply.
2 Love's redeeming work is done ;—
Fought the fight, the battle won :
Lo! our sun's eclipse is o'er;
Lo! he sets in blood no more.

3 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,
Christ hath burst the gates of hell :
Death in vain, forbids him rise;
Christ hath opened Paradise.

4 Lives again our glorious King!

[ocr errors]

Where, O death, is now thy sting?"
Once he died our souls to save;

66

Where's thy victory, boasting grave?"

5 Soar we now where Christ has led,
Following our exalted Head; •
Made like him, like him we rise,
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.
199. Comfort of Christ's Resurrection.
1 YE mourning souls, dry up your tears,
Dismiss your gloomy, groundless fears;
And let your hearts with this revive,
That Jesus Christ is yet alive.

2 His saints he loves, and never leaves :
The chief of sinners he receives;
Then let your hearts with this revive,
The sinner's Friend is yet alive.

3 He'll guard your souls from ev'ry ill,
His largest promises fulfil

;

Then let your hearts with this revive,
That Jesus Christ is yet alive.

4 Abundant grace will he afford,
Till you are present with the Lord,

And prove, what you have heard before,
That Jesus lives for evermore.

200. Christ's Resurrection the pledge of ours. L.M.

1 WE sing his love, who once was slain,
Who soon o'er death revived again,

That all his saints through him might have
Eternal conquest o'er the grave.

2 The saints who now in Jesus sleep,
His own almighty power shall keep,
Till dawns the great illustrious day,
When death itself shall die away.
3 When Jesus we in glory meet,
Our utmost joys shall be complete ;
When landed on that heavenly shore,
Death and the curse shall be no more.

4 Hasten, dear Lord, the glorious day,
And this delightful scene display,

When all thy saints from death shall rise,
Raptured in bliss, beyond the skies.

ASCENSION AND EXALTATION OF
CHRIST.

201.

Ascension of Christ.

1 COME, all harmonious tongues, Your noblest music bring;

'Tis Christ the everlasting God, And Christ the man, we sing. 2 Tell how he took our flesh To take away our guilt;

5

Dwell on the merits of his blood,
That hellish monsters spilt.
The waves of swelling grief
Did o'er his bosom roll,

And mountains of almighty wrath
Lay heavy on his soul.

Down to the shades of death,
He bowed his sacred head;
Yet he arose by power divine,
To judge the quick and dead.
No more the bloody spear;
The cross and nails no more;
For hell itself shakes at his name,
And all the heav'ns adore.

OUR

The same.

Lord is risen from the dead, Our Jesus is gone up on high; The pow'rs of hell are captive led, Dragg'd to the portals of the sky. 2 There his triumphal chariot waits; And angels chant the solemn lay: "Lift up your heads, ye heav'nly gates ! "Ye everlasting doors, give way !”

3" Who is the King of Glory, who?"

The Lord that all his foes o'ercame;
The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew ;
And Jesus is the Conqueror's name!
4 “Who is the King of Glory, who?”
The Lord of hosts, of might possess'd;
The King of saints and angels too-
God over all, for ever bless'd!

Ascension of Christ. 1 SWEET is the savour of his name Who suffered in his people's stead; His portion here, reproach and shame, He liveth now, he once was dead. 2 He once was dead, the very same

WESLEY.

L. M.

Who made the worlds, by his own pow'r,
Who now upholds the mighty frame,
And keeps it till the final hour.

3 He once was dead, the very same

Who soon will come with glory crown'd; His breath shall kindle then a flame

That shall consume the world around.

4 He once was dead, but now he lives, The risen and exalted Head

Of all, to whom he mercy gives

To know they live, though once were dead.

FOR a shout of sacred joy

To God the sovereign King!

Let all the saints their tongues employ,
And hymns of triumph sing.

2 Jesus our God ascends on high !
His heav'nly guards around
Attend him rising through the sky,
With trumpets' joyful sound.

3 While angels shout and praise their King,
Let mortals join their strains :

Loud let the church his honour sing;
In Zion Jesus reigns.
