PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION In publishing a second edition of my Manual of Geology, a few words are necessary in reply to comments made upon the first edition by two classes of reviewers; who may be divided, after the manner of Peter Ramus, into those that read the book and those that did not. To the latter, who were, doubtless, misled by the modesty of the preface, I would remark, that my book is not a Compendium made from Dana, Lyell, and Jukes, although I hope it may prove to be a useful introduction to the works of those writers ; and I have no doubt they will agree with me when they have read it. |
